I am a huge fan of the Backpack Explorer series and Night Walk is no exception! As a kid who was always super excited to be out in the leafy parts of the city with a flashlight at dusk, this was the kind of book I would have absolutely loved at that age! The backpack explorer series is unmatched in its ability to blend fun activities with facts and information to make learning and exploring outside fun for young explorers. This was such a great addition to the series.

Backpack Explorer: Night Walk is the perfect companion for anyone who loves exploring the outdoors, especially at night. The interactive elements, like the scavenger hunt and the glow-in-the-dark stickers, make it incredibly engaging for children and adults alike.
The illustrations are beautiful and really capture the magic of night time adventures. I also appreciated the educational facts sprinkled throughout the book, which made our night walks not only fun but also informative. My children were thrilled to identify different nocturnal animals and plants, and it sparked a lot of curiosity and excitement about nature.
I would love to have this book physically in a couple years. What a great lesson if homeschooling to be unconventional or a great idea to take on a camping trip. I love the idea of feeding our moth friends. Great information in small blurbs!
This is such a fun, thoughtful book that will really help kids explore. This would be fantastic for a summer camp, summer program, or gift for a kiddo at the beginning of the summer. I was delightfully surprised at the inclusion not only of bugs and animals that come out at night but also activities and games to engage kids in fun at night. This would also be great as a gift for going camping for the first time. I highly recommend for elementary classrooms and school libraries and public libraries. Readers will learn a lot and have fun doing it with this book!
Book Review: Backpack Explorer: Night Walk – What Will You Find?
Rating: 5 Stars
As a parent who loves outdoor adventures, I recently had the pleasure of reviewing Backpack Explorer: Night Walk by the Editors of Storey Publishing, and it's an absolute delight! This book is a wonderful invitation for young explorers aged 4 to 8 to step outside after dark and discover the magic of nature at night.
The book is brimming with fun and interactive activities designed to spark curiosity. From scavenger hunts that encourages young and old alike to hunt for nocturnal animals, insects, and even stars! With engaging flashlight games and detailed field guides, it truly feels like junior naturalists on a mission. The real magnifying glass included in the kit is sure to be a huge hit for examining everything from leaves to tiny bugs!
What really sets this book apart are the 12 interactive field guides that cover a variety of nighttime creatures. It’s such a great way for kids to learn about owls, bats, and other nocturnal wildlife while having a blast. The sensory scavenger hunts and activities—like listening to night sounds and searching for constellations—make for a complete outdoor experience that combines learning with adventure.
And let’s not forget about the amazing illustrations and photos! They are colorful, bright, and help to capture the essence of nighttime exploration. The book also includes a log for recording findings and 50 stickers, making it a comprehensive package for any budding naturalist.
In short, Backpack Explorer: Night Walk is a fantastic resource for families looking to explore the wonders of nature after dark. It’s packed with creativity and imagination, making it perfect for outdoor-loving kids and their nighttime adventures. I can't recommend it enough!
⚠️This review was written based on personal opinions and experiences with the book. Individual preferences may vary⚠️
First thing to note is this book is published in the USA and so expect American creatures and terms.
This book offers a great deal of information and opportunities to interact with the content and physical pages, including check lists and stickers. The checklists include sufficient variety to cater to children who live in the country or a city, rather than solely animal sounds the book also suggests listening out for cars, rustling leaves, and sirens for example.
Occasionally I found the layout of the text a little overwhelming and confusing, there is not always a clear reading order which is something the target audience are likely used to. Early readers often use a finger as a guide to keep their place in the text and on the page but because of the placement of both the text and images they would have to lift their hand to see the images - just something to consider with early reader books.
The font for the subtitles kept catching my attention, not in a way I would like, because of the mix of lower case and upper case letters - again, minor and personal preference but for the age group this could cause confusion... specifically all the letters appear upper case besides the 'i'. All this to say it isn't a commonly occurring problem, namely because the font style also changes so much throughout the book which is distracting.
One of the main benefits, and perhaps purposes of this book is to remove the element of the unknown from the dark and the night time, helping remove some of the fear also. Furthermore, readers are offered many activity ideas to try that will get them up and outside with friends and family, with some that are sure to stick with them for a long while.
Overall I haven't been age 4-8 in quite some time, try 20 ish years, but I did learn things, lots of things, and if I had the physical copy of the book YOU KNOW I would be sticking the stickers in the right spots, and finally, YES I am going to plant a moon garden!
I like the mixture of photography & illustrations. This would be a great book for homeschooling content & for parks to have in their nature centers. The night games was a cute touch (from a former camp counselor POV).
A fantastic book for kids 4-8 who want to explore nature at night, with 12 interactive field guides, a log to record findings, scavenger hunts, 50 stickers, and even a real magnifying glass. What's not to love?
A very junior non-fiction read, that tells us what we might discover on a night walk. We start with the moon, and so learn the names of some specific moons, the phases and how that works, and so on. We're supposed to attach stickers to each topic when we've ticked them off, so at least moths and owls are increasing in difficulty somewhat, making that part of the concept worthwhile. That said, the specific moths – and the amphibians later that we're supposed to be hunting – are America-only, so this book as seen isn't for all audiences. (And quite where we go to see Earth in the night sky eludes me.) This would have been improved with a cohesive selection of contents – the random jumping from critters to space and back is daft – and a more even level of difficulty – night-blooming plants and seeing animals' eyeshine can't be nearly as easy as the main constellations. For those reasons I think staying indoors with a better book the preferable option on this occasion.
Backpack Explorer: Night Walk is a take-along guide and activity book for exploring the world after dark. It includes a night walk journal and sticker badges to give yourself a sense of accomplishment when you see an animal, plant, or object in the night sky!
Each spread highlights a different topic, such as moon phases, constellations, insects, animals, and night-blooming flowers, with suggested activities, pictures, and factoids. It's a great jumping off point for further research and discovery.
I appreciate that the book makes night walks accessible no matter where you live--city, country, forest, seaside. Can you hear the wind blowing? A wailing siren? An owl hooting?
This is an adorable book! My sons love exploring outside and they really enjoyed this. It's educational and fun!
My children thoroughly enjoyed Backpack Explorer: Nature Walk, so we were excited to read another book in the series. This is a great book for children who love the outdoors. It would be especially fun to take on a camping trip or on a night walk in a state park or even near the beach. There are sections that talk about nocturnal animals, night blooming plants, the phases of the moon, popular constellations, plants, among other night sky phenomena. I love the actual photos included and the ideas for games. They would be great for camping or just having the kids playing outside. This book is wonderful for curious and adventurous kids and is a great way to encourage kids (who need it) to play outside!
Thank you Netgalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read and review this one.
Super in every way. Easy format, loads of ideas. I’m a huge fan of nature activity books, but a night time one has a whole new twist. Definitely one to pack if you’re off camping, but equally perfect to fill those dark winter evenings.
Oh, and if your little one is afraid of the dark, I reckon this demystifies the night and removes the scare. Worth a try,
This is fast becoming one of our favourite outdoor education series.
In the latest release, we find out all about what to bring, do and spot on a nocturnal adventure. With top tops, scavenger hunts and stickers, we found out in depth information about owls, raccoons, crickets, stars, moths, amphibians and the night sky.
Discussing shooting stars, the planets and bioluminescence, we learnt so much and had shadow puppet fun too. With games to play to encourage fully immersive learning, this is another brilliant edition jam packed with information.
Thank you to NetGalley and Storey Publishing for sending this eBook for review consideration. All opinions are our own.
Another great addition to the series, Backpack Explorer: Night Walk leads elementary aged kids through what happens after dark. From the moon and constellations, to nocturnal animals, this book stands up to the wonderful natural world explorer premises. of the previous books in the series. This one is not my personal favorite BUT it may be yours so it is most definitely worth picking up!
Night Walk is a captivating children’s book that takes readers on an enchanting journey into the nocturnal world. Packed with fascinating information about nocturnal animals and night-blooming flowers, as well as fun activities for children to enjoy in nature after dark, it’s a treasure trove of discovery and adventure.
This book is perfect for families and children who like to explore the outdoors. This is a book I would take camping for my kids when exploring a new place. It not only encourages curiosity and appreciation for nature but also provides plenty of ideas for exciting nighttime adventures. Whether it’s spotting nocturnal animals, stargazing, or learning about the mysteries of the night, this book is sure to spark joy and wonder in every young adventurer’s heart.
Fantastic activity learning book for any age or country of origin, really. There are sections on the night sky, nocturnal animals and lots more, complete with fun learning tools like magnifying glass and ways to see animals and flora that have bioluminescence. Fantastic learning tool!
There are activities for learning and stickers (if the book is gifted to one person). It also encourages interaction for the reader with both the giver and the environment. I want one!
The illustrations are delightful, imaginative, clear, and colorful.
Well suited for reading WITH someone of any age including ESL, and great for gifting to anyone, and even to a school or teacher or your public library!
I requested and received a free temporary e-book on Adobe Digital Editions from Storey Publishing, Storey Publishing, LLC via NetGalley. Thank you!
A marvelous book!
Just like the other book in this series, it's a great book that encourages exploration and provides a lot of good information. The art style and layout of the pages are great. There is really nothing bad to say about the book. It's great. I would highly recommend getting it for your child - especially if they are mildly curious about the biological world around them.
This is a book packed with interesting information about nocturnal animals as well as flowers that bloom in the night. It also features various fun activities for children to do at night in nature. It is a fabulous book.
We loved this book! It wasn’t all relevant to us given that we live in the UK but that seem to deter my children. We loved learning about and copying the animal sounds and the hunts for different noises and things to see at night. My oldest is 5 and he found it all really interesting, I’m sure in a couple of years he would even more so. My husband and I learnt a few things too and enjoyed learning about night blooming plants and glow in the dark. Really great book and I’ve not come across anything like it before. We are desperate to camp now
