Wowwww wowowow. This book absolutely destroyed me. I am in shambles. This was INCREDIBLE. I absolutely could not put it down. My eyes were glued to every page from the start, and I was completely transported into this book like it was a movie playing out in my head. The scenes and imagery were perfect, I absolutely loved the magic systems and all the different kingdoms. It was so fun and interesting to read, and it felt so easy to picture it all happening.

Mal is an amalgamation of all my favorite FMCs put together. The cleverness and strength of Aelin, the dark fierceness of Manon, the kindness of Feyre, the wittiness and honesty of Violet. She’s such a well balance, incredibly likable character, I felt so connected to her throughout the entire book. She is such a perfect FMC to me and I am SO excited to read more of a story with her in it.

Aside from Mal, her family and their bond was so beautiful to read about. I absolutely loved all of them and their traits- but KAI?? 😭 Yes pleaseeee. I fear i’m obsessed with him. I absolutely love how strong the sibling connections are in this book for all the characters. It reads so powerful and I love that the most important people for all of them are their siblings. Haven, Kai, Kage, and Mal are just the epitome of an undivided unit, each having their own unique qualities and abilities that blend together so beautifully. Alina and Ash are also such amazing characters, I cannot wait to get more development from them in the next book! Honestly this book has given me so many new top tier book characters, I am so happy that the cover and description drew me in to such a new unexpected favorite book for me!! If you love throne of glass, one dark window, witches, dragons, game of thrones, acotar, enemies to lovers, I could go onnnn and on- you will EAT THIS UP. I want to scream from the rooftops for everyone to give this a chance to be your next roman empire book that you cannot put down!

The plot and the story building was perfection, I was absolutely on the edge of my seat. I was definitely shocked by some plot twists that I did NOT see coming until right when they were about to happen or right when they did, which was so nice because usually I feel like I guess them all! Absolutely gut wrenching ending, i’m dying for the next book already!!

ARC Review!
A dark, slow-burn fantasy romance set in a world of cursed kingdoms and uneasy alliances. This one is packed with drama, angst, and high-stakes tension between two very different royals.

That said, I did find myself struggling with the third-person narrative and shifting POVs. It took a while to adjust, and the pacing felt a bit uneven. Chapter transitions were abrupt, and while the world-building was atmospheric, it leaned heavily into a bleak tone that made it hard to stay immersed at times.

There was a large cast of characters (normally a favorite of mine!), but most didn’t quite come alive on the page. Kai showed some promise, though!

I can’t wait for book 2!

So twisty! I didn’t even foresee some of the twists and I read a lot of books. This was a great read for going into it blind (other than it obviously being a fantasy based on the cover). It was more like a 4.5 star read. I wanted more Ash and Mal love story because it was so cute and wholesome when it shouldn’t have been. Seeing all the different POV’s come together was well written including Tabitha’s at the beginning of the chapters. Now I need the next book to come out ASAP.

The author did an amazing job of world building and I found most of the characters stories interesting. I loved Kai and Alina's romance and development the most and thought their story was by far my favorite. I also thought the fire prince's background and character development was unique and as an SLP I found it really cool to read about in a book. My main issue is that I saw little growth with the main character Mal, I felt like she was very one dimensional and didn't have a lot of character growth. I hope that changes in the next book in the series.

Dark, Addictive, and Utterly Unputdownable!

😮Wow. Just wow.😮 🥀A Kingdom of Shadows and Ash🥀 by J.F. Johns completely swept me away. From the first page, I was drawn into a hauntingly beautiful world filled with danger, secrets, and unforgettable characters. The atmosphere is dark and lush, and the writing is so vivid that I could picture every scene like a movie playing in my head.

The main character is fierce, flawed, and utterly compelling—I loved watching her come into herself in a world full of magic, betrayal, and unexpected alliances. The plot moves at a perfect pace, with just the right balance of action, emotion, and shocking twists that kept me up until 3am reading “just one more chapter."

J.F. Johns has created a fantasy realm that feels epic in scale but emotionally intimate, which is rare and refreshing. If you enjoy enemies-to-allies/enemies-to-lovers dynamics, dark fantasy settings, and strong, resilient heroines, this book will be everything you're looking for.

Already counting down the days until the sequel. Highly recommended!

So I read this book in 24 hours. I usually have a pretty good feeling when I start reading if that specific book is something for me - and this was! It was beautifully written and so well put-together that I was completely drawn in from the first page.

The story follows Mal Blackburn - the fourth born child to the Kingdom of Darkness, who's been arranged to marry the Fire Prince. But to break a long-forgotten curse, she must kill the prince - but will she succeed in her mission?

Wyverns, murder, betrayal, spice, dragons - This book literally has all that AND more - what's not to like?!

The book is written with multiple POV's, although mainly focusing on our FMC Mal. Mal is fierce as a product of growing up in the Kingdom of Darkness. I love me a badass FMC, and she did live up to this on some occasions. She's calculating, but also loving. The friendship with her siblings - especially Kai - was really cute and honestly not what I was expecting, as similar books always has the FMC being bullied, forgotten or an outcast from her family. But although Mal is raised in a loving home, she does feel different - I don't want to spoil all the details, so you'll just have to read the book to find out why :)

What I didn't like about this book was the transitions from chapter to chapter. At times it felt like being torn out of the chapter and thrown into another without a proper introduction, leaving me wondering whose POV I was reading. Also, I did find myself skimming some of the chapters, as the scenes went on for too long or I deemed them unnecessary (which is on me, I know).

Another thing that left me kind of mehhh was the fact that Mal and her wyvern had been connected since birth and are supposed to be intertwined with each others' souls. But I just really didn't feel the connection. Besides the explanations of her riding Nyx, their connection is not explored or explained, which frustrated me a bit, as it made me feel kind of indifferent to their connection. I would've loved to know if Mal could feel the feelings of her wyvern - like what does it mean to be part of each others' souls? Do they instinctively know if one is in danger or where each other are? TEEELLL MEEE.

For the love story between Ash and Mal I wasn't that invested. It felt kind of insta-lovey, and everything happened so quickly between them. I could see from a mile away what would happen (also I read a lot of fantasy, so it's quite easy to pick up on, even when its subtly hinted) I like a slow-burn, and this was not it. Their story was still cute and supportive, although not specifically to my liking.

The authors' ability to weave a tale so beautifully with such unique political schemes and plots is definitely what got me through. She is definitely one to look out for and I'm excited to follow her journey.

I'd rate this 3.5 stars as it was really beautifully written and I DID like the plot and the ending, and will almost definitely be reading the 2nd book when it comes out.

I didn’t really know what to expect going into this. I really liked the concept when reading the description and was quite excited.

The characters are all so individual and unique and I really felt like their personalities came through so well on the page. I really did end up loving the FMC and the MMC. I felt their situation/relationship was written really well. The side characters were all just as interesting as the main characters and I really enjoyed the multiple POV which gave us more insight into them.

The plot line was very slow throughout the first half of the book. It wasn’t repetitive it was due building up to everything that was coming later in the book that made it feel slower. The engagement dragged on for such a large part of the book and I felt it wasn’t until after the main characters were married that the pace picked up. However, I did really enjoy the plot overall. The curse and the mystery behind it really did keep me hooked wanting to know more.

Overall I did enjoy the book and felt it was very unlike any fantasy I’ve read before. I think it would be great for people that are looking for something heavy on the fantasy side that also enjoys the combination of magic, mystical creatures, arranged marriage, curses and much more.

I really enjoyed this book, I loved that it was almost multiple POVs despite it not being written in the 1st person. I really enjoyed the world building, the different kingdoms and characters and honestly I didn’t see the twists near the end coming at all! I kind of wish we saw a bit more development with the romance with the main characters - I think more yearning and tension between them would have been great. I liked that there wasn’t a naïveté to the characters that you sometimes get in this type of genre. I did like that there was more than one romantic story within the book. Would be super excited to read the next book in the series!

I absolutely loved this book from start to finish. From the very first pages, you're completely swept into a rich and immersive world. The worldbuilding is incredibly well done, with eight distinct kingdoms, each with their own unique traits that are revealed gradually throughout the story.
The main character, Mal, is a total badass wyverian — strong, fearless, and independent. She's thrown into an arranged marriage with the Fire Prince, Ash, in a political move to reunite the kingdoms, all tied to an ancient prophecythat could doom or save them all.
The characters are so well written — complex, emotional, and deeply lovable. The sibling relationships are especially touching. I completely fell in love with the side characters, especially Kai and Aline!
The book also explores powerful themes like women's roles, sisterhood, and independence, all wrapped up in a world filled with magical creatures: wyverns, dragons, giant wolves, witches… what more could you want?

I finished this book at 2am and I am devastated that it has ended. I absolutely loved every minute of this and the two main characters were perfect, the final scene between them made me actually gasp! I didn't see it coming. I highly recommend this book and will definitely be buying a physical copy when it's released.

I enjoyed this read so much! I thought the story line was so interesting - and it kept me wanting to keep reading.

Usually I don't love multiple POV's especially throughout a chapter as it can be a little confusing, but I didn't find that with this book.

The magic system was easy to follow, which is a big plus for me.

I did feel like the writing was a tad choppy/needed some refining in some areas - but I could get past that with this storyline!

I loved both Mal and Alina's storylines, and I cannot wait to see where they go in the next book.

I enjoyed this book; it has many of the current popular tropes, such as dragons, fated mates, enemies to lovers, touch them and die, etc. The characters' relationship is great, and the world-building is done well. The only drawback is that the multiple POVs sometimes make it hard to feel connected to the characters. I would have enjoyed this book a lot more if there were fewer POVs, but I'm still looking forward to reading more from this author 3.5 stars!

Oh my goodness where do I start?! I love this book. The plot twists, yes more than one, had me stunned! I love that it has so many POV and she writes in a way they all blend together and I love it! I can’t wait for the next book already! I wish I could hug Mal Blackburn!

But the story struggled with focus. The main characters didn’t get enough of their own chapters, and there were way too many points of view from side characters who weren’t important to the main plot. Even maids were getting full chapters, which took attention away from the core story. On top of that, a secondary love story ended up overshadowing the main romance, which was disappointing.

Lady of Darkness meets Serpent and the Wings of Night is how I best describe this with a sprinkle of TOG vibes.

I can so see this as the next big book to blow up! From the first chapter I was HOOKED. Romantasy DONE RIGHT! My thoughts about this book are so scattered because of the ending so here’s what you have to look forward to with this masterpiece!

Unfortunately did not finish this one. I’m rating it a 2 because I think that others will be into it. It has the workings of enemies to lovers, dragon and wyvern riders, a strong sassy FMC. But the writing just wasn’t for me.

I love when an author is able to have a wide variety of characters and still be able to keep the story flowing. This is one a the rare instances where I actually enjoyed a book that had multiple characters and their pov's that didn't drive me crazy. The story had a lot going on and I loved it. The different races of people was interesting and I love that they all had a different animal or mythical creature they related to. The plot was intense and kept me hooked. Im so ready for book 2.
