Wow. She is a creepy character but also not at the same time? What a mind bend. Great story and complex characters. I thought this was going to be like every other tenant book but it truly wasn’t.

Wow... I was riveting. The relationship complexities and oddities, the dark vibes and suspense. I got a bit lost in this book and finished it quickly. A brilliant piece of writing.

The Tenants is one of those thrillers that grips you from the first chapter and doesn’t let go until the final, chilling twist. M.A. Hunter has crafted a deliciously tense domestic noir that had me flying through the pages, desperate to piece together what was really going on behind closed doors.

The setup is deceptively simple—a new tenant, a seemingly perfect home, and neighbors who are just a little too interested. But it doesn’t take long for the cracks to show, and once they do, the sense of unease ratchets up fast. I found myself second-guessing everyone, and just when I thought I had it figured out… nope. Hunter pulls the rug out in the best way.

What I appreciated most was how grounded it felt emotionally. The paranoia, the isolation, the creeping dread—it all felt so real. The tension is built not just through plot, but through character dynamics, buried secrets, and the quiet terror of not knowing who to trust in your own home.

If you love twisty psychological thrillers with a strong sense of place, pitch-perfect pacing, and plenty of suspicion to go around, The Tenants is a must-read. Dark, gripping, and disturbingly plausible—I couldn’t put it down.

This was such an entertaining mystery! The writing throughout really pulled me in and made it hard to put down. Even though some parts felt a little repetitive, it really made sense with the protagonist and her paranoid background personality, so I felt like it was really well done. The pacing throughout was really great, and I was constantly second guessing what was really going on. I also enjoyed some breadcrumb information spread throughout about Eve's past and her trauma which heightened the mystery elements a lot.

Overall, I just really enjoyed how the mystery was layered. I was never fully sure who to trust, and I appreciated that I couldn’t figure it all out early on—it made the ending that much more satisfying.

Creepy, interesting—but not my favorite

This book had a really cool and creepy idea. I was pulled in by the narrator’s voice—it felt intense and unique. The concept of someone never leaving their building and watching over all the tenants made it feel eerie in a good way. I liked how the story slowly revealed secrets, and the idea that danger could be inside the building, not outside, was very well done.

But I had mixed feelings. The pacing felt slow in parts, and it took a while for the tension to build up. I also found some parts of the plot predictable, and I didn’t connect deeply with the main character. I think I just wanted a bit more thrill or twists that shocked me.

Still, if you enjoy slow-burn thrillers with a mysterious atmosphere, this could work for you! It had potential, just didn’t fully click for me.

The story and the characters are so well written. I felt I was in the book with them. Be prepared to read it in one sitting. Loved it!

This was a good read that took an oft-used general storyline and made it really unique. It centers on Eve, who is an agoraphobic landlady living onsite in the apartment building she owns. She goes out of her way (in MANY ways) to help her tenants and make sure they are happy living there. When someone ends up dead, Eve realizes that things weren't as peachy as she thought, and increasing questions into her own involvement make her worried about how much people know about her past.

Eve is a strange character who really should be creepy and unlikable (after all, she has a secret passageway where she can listen to what her tenants are saying) but there is something charming about her. She is desperate for everyone to be happy and for them to like her, even if she goes about it in unorthodox ways. I love an unreliable narrator and you definitely get that with Eve, who insists she is being framed when it's not clear what she did or didn't do. I thought the twist in the book was unexpected, though some things did feel just a little far-fetched. The ending of the book was good, and I felt like it fit well with the rest of the story.

Overall, I enjoyed this read and finished it quickly. It put a unique twist on what could seem like a tired storyline. Thanks to Netgalley for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Spooky apartment happenings that make you second guess what you know to be true or not about the situation and the people living there.

Our main character, Eve, cares about her tenants. She always tries to help them out. But things get spooky. One of her tenants ends up dead and it seems quite suspicious. Eve toes the line of unreliable narrator due to her agoraphobia (which was such a unique and interesting way to make an unreliable narrator, I've never read anything like that before, very clever).

Eve wants to figure out what is going on, who is the murderer, is she being framed, and why is no one taking her seriously.

This had some great twists and was just such a unique little thriller that kept me pretty captivated most of the time.

I really enjoyed this book. It had me gripped from the start. Eve was fascinating as the main protagonist. Her agoraphobia, the attack, her drinking, her lifestyle, the secret passageways! I think this is what made the story stand apart from other similarly written thrillers. She could have come across as creepy, but she came across as lonely and genuinely wanting to help people, maybe because of her past? I had a gut feeling about Ethan, something wasn't as it seemed there but I didn't realise how right I was until further into the story. I liked how any/all of the tenants could have been integral to the plot, making it feel like a proper whodunit!!

A cast of characters which mainly concentrate on the tenants.
Creepy and full of twists.
Loved everything about this book and found myself racing through.
First class thriller, one not to be missed.

There is twists and turn and follows everything you need in a good thriller/mystery.

The Tenants by M.A. Hunter is a fast-paced closed room mystery as told by an agoraphobic and unreliable narrator. What more could you possibly want?

Eve thinks of her tenants as family and keeps a close eye over her flock, crossing the line in her extreme involvement in their lives. When one of the tenants is found dead, Eve finds herself in the role of amateur sleuth, wondering just how well she really knows the people who dwell under her roof.

I loved the very unique perspective of an agoraphobic protagonist relating the events of a closed room whodunit. This was compelling, propulsive, and kept me on my toes until the very end. 4.5 stars

Eve is an agoraphobic landlord who really likes to spy on her tenants (they obviously don't know she does), she thinks of the people in her building as one big happy family, so when one of the tenant is found dead under suspicious circumstances, she starts unravelling.
Eve is the ultimate unreliable narrator, she tells us only what we need to know. We learn at pretty early on that something bad happened when she was at boarding school, we only learn the truth about that particular even by the end of the book. Something really bad happened to her five years ago (which might explain the agoraphobia), but again we only hear the details by the end of the book. We also learn that the building was the scene of brutal murders 50 years ago when it was a hotel, by a serial killer that technically had the same position that Eve now has. Her father was also a person of interest and one of her tenants a cop who worked the case. Lots of coincidence if you ask me, I did see a few things coming but I’m pretty sure I was meant to.
Now I loved the atmosphere and the way you could see Eve slowly descend into madness as weird things keep happening around her ; the resolution was a bit disappointing though because I found it a bit too over the top. Do people in real life actually hold grudges for so long? Make plans like that to get revenge on something that happened so long ago? I sure hope not. The bad guys were a little to cartoon villains for my taste, I did enjoy the final reveal though, I love morally great characters.

One ridiculous detail that should have been picked up by the editor, in one chapter she makes her bed and starts doing laundry, a couple chapters later she does it again. My annoying attention to details hated that.

This was such a page-turner! A book that I read in one sitting. I was hooked on the story, it was so captivating, full of suspense and with lots of great twists. The author has a unique style of prose and the characters were somehow endearing (what's wrong with me?!). I loved every moment of it, the ending left me speechless!

I’m not sure if was intended to be a bit farcical but that’s what I got from this novel. If you’re a fan of Richard Osman novels you’ll love this one.

Eve Pennington is the landlady of a small apartment block. Left to her by her father, she has tried to make the flats as welcoming for her tenants as possible, going above and beyond the norm to keep everyone happy. Sadly Eve doesn’t appreciate that her overwhelming kindness doesn’t please all the residents and there is more than a little backbiting here and there. When she discovers the body of one of her tenants, Eve’s strange behaviour soon brings her to the notice of the investigating officers. In this case, walls really do have ears!

A well travelled format with a few nicely added touches. An easy read, though some of the timelines/ages appeared a bit ‘off’. Nothing exceptional to make the plot stand out from other similar stories.

An ok read, but not a complete attention grabber, though as a positive it is a short enough book to get to the end.

I flew through this book! There were so many twists and turns, and a variety of ways this story could have gone - I loved it. It felt like we were joining the FMC in her slow descent into insanity and we were kept wondering if she was going insane or things were actually happening to her! Fast-paced, well written and really enjoyable. I finished it in less than 24 hours and would read this author again for sure!

I found Eve to be such an interesting character I don’t think I would want her as my landlord though she was a little creepy but then I did feel sorry for her at some points
This had so much going on by the end I was literally on the edge of my bed! Love it
