Eve is the landlady of a building that she never leaves because of her agoraphobia. Her mission is to keep her tenants happy, but when one of them turns up dead, the situation becomes unstable between them and her.
At first I found the main character a bit disturbing with her obsession to please and know everything about everyone. When we later understand her trauma and the ‘gaslighting’ part begins I felt a bit more sympathetic towards her.
Without leaving the building the author creates a claustrophobic mystery in which there are many secrets, little conspiracies and interesting twists and turns with an ending that could point to a sequel.
If you like books whodunit with a twist this is definitely your book.

Eve is a dedicated landlady of a block of flats, which was left to her by her father. She is concerned about the happiness and well being of her tenants, and looks upon them all as her family. She uses a secret passageway between all the flats to observe the tenants and hear their conversations, alerting her to any problems there may be. Eve does have a brother, who is concerned about her mental health issues.
Eve never leaves the flats, she suffered a serious assault some years ago, which left her with agoraphobia, which it makes it impossible for her to go beyond the front door., as she believes her attacker is still at large waiting for her.
Eve discovers the body of one of her tenants in his flat, the police are involved, and Eve starts to feel that events are slipping out of control. Strange things are happening that lead her to believe someone has been in her flat. She feels paranoid, and her anxiety increases as she feels she must be going mad. She worries that one, or more, of her tenants knows about her past, and is trying to discover her secrets which would put her in danger.
This was a tense psychological thriller, made more so by the fact that Eve was unable to escape the flats due to her condition.
Thank you for my advance copy.

It isn't deep, but it is a cozy cozy rainy afternoon with puppy snugs and pomegranate oolong. Oh look, I need more words, here are some now.

Left a block of flats by her late father, Eve is very conscientious that she has to keep her tenants happy. So much so that she retreats to a secret passageway to observe their moves to try and nip any problems in the bud.
Following a serious assault Eve has agoraphobia and hasnt left her block in years. Her brother is concerned about her mental health, more so when she discovers the body of a tenant in his flat.
Her condition is spiralling and when strange things start happening she herself feels she losing her mind. Who could have it in for her and why? The reasons may shock you.
This was a fairly fast paced novel, written in such a way that you feel all of Eve's panic and worry. It's an interesting storyline in the sense it all happens within the four walls of the block. I really enjoyed it

Wow! What a book, let’s start with the plot, I really like the setting of the book and how it didn’t move away to a different place. The characters I really enjoyed reading about. I did feel for Eve at times. Living with a mental illness is never easy. As for the actually crime, I didn’t guess it but liked how it played out. Overall a good book.

Eve takes over her father’s building and as a landlady she goes above and beyond to try and make all of the tenants happy. Eve’s agoraphobia keeps her isolated to her flat which gives her ample time to spy on her neighbors and try to use the information to keep everyone happy. When a tenant ends up dead and the police show up to do an investigation they focus on Eve due to her mental state. She quickly finds out she can’t trust all of her tenants and there is something more sinister going on. This book was a good thriller and the ending was definitely not something I would have guessed. There was still some things I felt were left unanswered after reading but overall I enjoyed it.

Thanks to NetGalley and Boldwood Books for this Advanced Reader’s Copy of The Tenants by M.A. Hunter due to be published August 18, 2025.

Eve inherited an apartment building from her father and knows nothing of the history of the building. All Eve knows is that she MUST know what’s going on with her tenants to keep them safe. Is this her real reasoning?

I couldn’t finish this one fast enough to see what happened. All the characters were interesting, and I knew they were connected somehow but had to read to find out, and I was not disappointed! It had everything a thriller has – suspense, surprise, wonderful characters, and, hopefully, a sequel – I’m here for that!

Great intriguing book. I love spaces that are unknown. This went to a place I didn't see coming. The not knowing was more interesting than finding out. A good read.

Thanks to the author, the publisher and netgalley for an early release of this book.

A tense novel full of secrets and lies! The MC, Eve, is an agoraphobic after an attack. She is afraid that her attacker is waiting outside for her.
I found that not many people were sympathetic about her condition, which is sad, as it is a real condition.
I sailed through this book, needing answers to the mystery of James's death, and was gobsmacked at the reveal.
And that ending!
There were a lot of characters in the book, but it wasn't difficult to keep up with them.
I recommend this book, it is fast paced and unputdownable.

Thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this eARC.

M. A. Hunter delivers a captivating read with this story about an agoraphobic renting rooms to her tenants in this psychological thriller - where a woman fearing the danger outside of her residence is surrounded by much more insidious threats in the place she considers her bastion of safety.

One star off for the question all animal lovers will be asking, "what happened to George?"

Read the book to understand this reference 😉.

This author is so good at creating characters who are complicated and this book features one of their best creations yet. Eve is a fascinating narrator, evincing so much sympathy for her situation - but is she all she appears to be? You’ll be kept guessing throughout this fast paced and twisted plot. I am a huge fan of M.A Hunter and they have kept true to their consistent legacy of delivering clever plots, intriguing characters and a thrill a minute. Just amazing.

This one hooks you fast and doesn’t let go. A chilling, twisty thriller that starts with a simple premise—a new tenant moves in—but quickly unravels into something far darker. Every chapter adds a new layer of unease, and just when you think you’ve figured it out… you haven’t.

Hunter does a brilliant job weaving tension into the ordinary. The characters feel real, the secrets are buried deep, and the dread builds like a slow drip. It’s the kind of book that makes you side-eye your neighbors and double-check the locks.

Perfect for fans of domestic suspense, unreliable narrators, and those twisty “who-can-you-trust?” vibes. You’ll race through it in one sitting.
