Start reading this book in the keen anticipation that it will keep you gripped and wondering about just about every character until its chilling denouement. Tara is the main character, and she lives in a South London cul-de-sac with her husband Noah, teenaged daughter Sophie and son Spencer (11). One night, when her husband is away on business, she pops in to speak to her neighbour, and ends up having a drink with the neighbour's husband. The next thing she knows, she is waking up in her neighbour's bed, next to Lee - who is dead - with no memory of how this came to pass but certain she had not had enough to drink to explain this lapse. Shocked, she makes her escape from the house and begins the switchback journey to make sense of what happened, initially deciding not to go to the police. There are plenty of shocks and surprises along the way and Tara's trust in all of her family is challenged to the extreme. |

I hadn't read a novel by Kathryn Croft before and possibly the highest praise I can give is that I look forward to reading her other four books. This was a well crafted and intriguing thriller. It didn't break any new ground but Croft ably drew the characters and their potential as the killer. The hook of having the main character wake up in bed next to a dead body with no memory was satisfying in it's follow through. The plot shifted in a clever way and the final conclusion was unexpected, but not cloying. The mystery and the family dynamics would make this a good choice for book clubs. |
A thrilling page turner! Tara Logan lives a fairly normal life. With a teenage daughter who can't seem to stay out of trouble and her eleven year old son who is the apple of her eye, and her husband, with whom the marriage feels a tad bit of a strain. When her husband goes away on a business trip and the kids go to stay with friends, Tara finds herself with extra time on her hands. She decides to go over and see if her neighbor and friend is ok, after receiving a worrisome text that same morning. The next morning Tara wakes in bed, but not her own bed, but rather her neighbors' bed. The man next to her is not her husband and he is not alive either. Terrified Tara flees to her house and the spiral of madness descends. As a writer, this book inspired me to continue at the Thriller I am currently trying to write. Ms. Croft definitely knows how to tell an amazing story. Throughout the book, it has you constantly guessing, and just when you think you have the killer identified, something else comes to light. In the end, the killer end up being the person you never even suspected. The page turning thrill of the storyline leaves you breathless and in suspense with each line of each page. Leaving you wanting more and waiting with bated breath for the answers. I was so inspired by this book and so amazed, that I suggested this read to my grandmother. So far, she is loving every minute of it. This is a must read, definitely! *I received this book, from NetGalley, in exchange for my honest review and opinions.* View all my reviews on Goodreads. |
Wow, what a start to a book, waking up in your neighbours bed with him stabbed to death and having no recollection of what happened. I have read a few of Kathryn Croft's book as and I have loved them all, and this one was just as good if not better. It was a gripping story from the very beginning and kept me captivated all the way through. Full of twists and suprises. I loved it and give it a full 5 stars. |
