I never managed to finish the first book but I still tried to read this one. Just wasn't for me. Well written and all but I wasn't a huge fan of the main character. |
Fans of the first book will not be disappointed! Kendra Donovan still finds herself stuck in 1815 London and hasn't solved the mystery of how she went from a modern FBI agent into a wormhole back in time. But there's not much time for solving that mystery as it seems a woman has been murdered and since police haven't been established as we know it she's set out to find the killer. She's acclimated enough to her circumstances to no longer be as shocked by the sexism and fights back and is also afraid of the butterfly effect and tries her best not to slip up about future happenings that might change things--although easier said then done. As for the murder victim, she'd taken on many lovers and had no qualms about pissing people off so let's say there are plenty of suspects--including Donovan's possible love interest. Hey-o! I find this series to be a fun, feminist, historical fic mystery and look forward to more. |
Kendra Donovan is still stuck in Regency times. Seems like her job there is not finished. Now she has to save Alec from being charged with Lady Dover's murder. Actually, according to the mores of the time, it is doubtful Alec will be charged by the House of Lords, but someone in Lady Dover's past is determined to see justice done. I do have some problems with this book, minor though they may be. Kendra still has the miracle growing hair. Whatever she is on, I want some. Plus, Kendra is an FBI profiler. Guess what job description does not exist in the FBI? Lucky I didn't review the first book, I really could have gone to town on her FBI sections. She could have used the same meticulous research there as she does on the other parts of the book. Finally, I know this is a Regency, but I don't think even Georgette Heyer's are as chaste. Now for the good. This is how I like to learn history! Through the people. Their dress, their homes, their street life, their etiquette, their transportation problems. Other than what I mentioned above, I can't find the hint of one wrong note. I was especially intrigued by some of the hygiene or lack of hygiene info. but that's just me. McElwain does a great job with her characters. I want to be adopted by the Duke and I want Rebecca as my friend. As for Alec.... It was nice to see the band back together again. I love the plot, and I can just imagine how the particular brutality of the crime would really mess with that rarefied world that Kendra has entered. As rarefied as it might be, Kendra still struggles against the strictures of that time. But she is beginning to understand some of the problems she encounters in Regency times aren't miraculously solved in her enlightened time. She might have a heck of a lot more opportunities, resources, and freedom, but she still had to fight for everything she wanted. Maybe Recency times are starting to look better to Kendra. She is finding all of the love there that she did without in her time, parental, friendship, and romantic. I really enjoyed this book and I hope #3 is on the hozizon. Thank you to NetGalley for a chance to read this review in exchange of an honest review. |
I enjoyed this second in the Kendra Donovan series. The language was still a bit unbelievable, but the mystery really made this a minor issue. I'm a sucker for time traveling to a past era... it's interesting seeing the striking gender differences during this time period. Womens rights have come a long way? I really look forward to seeing what adventures await Kendra in the future. 4 stars |

Kendra Donovan is back again! She still stuck in 1815 but another murder has happened and the main suspect is Alec, her lover and The Duke's nephew. Kendra must rush against time to try and solve the murder of Lady Dover, Alec's ex-lover, before charges are brought against him. Once again Julie McElwain brings the past to life with her story telling. The second novel in the Kendra Donovan series did not disappoint! |
I feel a series developing of which I will read every book as it comes. A Twist in Time, the second installment of a new series featuring chrono-displacement victim, Kendra Donovan, was a fun and exciting murder mystery. I'm starting to really believe that the most exciting, and the least boring, type of Historical Fiction is the Time Travel kind. You don't need to cast aside or forgo your knowledge of the present day, or a more modern time, you can carry it with you and show it off and fumble through your otherwise cursory knowledge of that time period in the past. The purposefully placed anachronisms committed by Miss Donovan, and the sheer audacity with which she all but refuses to conform to the time period in which she has arrived is what I like so much about her. Her personality is a little bit Kinsey Millhone, with the methodology of a Kay Scarpetta, and the circumstances of unexpected time travel of a Claire Randall all rolled into one 21st century FBI package. I gave up on the Kay Scarpetta series long ago (pretty much when the age gap between Kay and her niece was mysteriously and inexplicably closing in, without the benefit of time travel or science fiction), and with the closing of the Kinsey Millhone series approaching all too rapidly, I love having discovered a new series that is just as fun and just as enjoyable to read. I can't wait to read the next installment of the Kendra Donovan series. |

A Twist in Time is an excellent follow-up to McElwain's first book, A Murder in Time. This is a great time-travel story that will keep readers entertained. |
I really enjoy this series! I loved Kendra's determination, I can completely relate. She wanted to get to the bottom of the crime and didn't think too far into the consequences. The first book I think was a lot faster paced, but considering this took place a lot in London I can see why that happened! All in all, this is a very interesting time traveling mystery! |

I have been waiting for A Twist in Time since I finished the last book. It is well worth the wait. Julie McElwain brings a brilliant character with modern-day sensibilities and skills into Regency England. Her masterful touch brings history to modern audiences in a way that is rarely seen. Kendra uses her training with the FBI to solve a murder in 1800s England. This time, her lover is accused of killing his mistress and Kendra must employ all of her tricks and talents to prove his innocence. |
As a total newbie to the murder mystery genre, I didn't have a lot of expectations going into this book - I was more interested in the historical fiction aspect. I quite loved Kendra's determination to get to the bottom of the crime, damn the consequences! I will say that this second installment moves a little slower than the first, I believe due to the nature of the crime and the location itself. Hopefully we'll see more of Kendra Donovan! |

Kendra's story is interesting and I do enjoy the time period. I did find the amount of times Kendra mentions the plight of women in the regency era a bit annoying. Otherwise, it is a good sequel. |
I received an advanced copy of this novel from the publisher via Netgalley for an honest review. Another exciting adventure for our FBI agent who has traveled through the wormhole and been sent back in time 200 years. This novel picks up almost within hours or maybe a day since the last left off as Kendra was attempting to return to her time through the wormhole again.....but nothing happened. The wonderful Duke Aldridge has decided to make Kendra less of a spectacle in society by officially making her his ward, as was custom for the time with a woman of her age who is unmarried. Although the Duke's nephew and heir, Alec, would prefer Kendra to just marry him and have no more concerns on the matter. As Kendra is juggling the complete dismissal of women's rights and her frustration with learning to deal with that situation, the Duke feels like she is still stuck in his time for a reason....and that becomes all too evident very quickly. One of Alec's previous lovers is found brutally murdered and disfigured, and Kendra's handsome Alec is the number one suspect. Was she kept in this time to help him and the Duke? Or was this all just a mix-up that she's stuck 200 years in the past? Regardless of the answer Kendra has a job to do to prove Alec's innocence and put going home on the back burner. Although exciting and thrilling adventure and I cannot wait for many more! I'm unsure if this is going to be a trilogy or potentially an ongoing series, but I do love these novels and am so excited I got to read this one early as well! I am sticking with this series! |
A good book even without reading the first volume. I felt I could jump right into the story. |
Ahhhhhh! When I found out there'd be a second Kendra Donovan book, I got so excited! It exceeded my expectations! I love Kendra's complex character and her navigating through early 1800's English Ton aristocratic idiosyncrasies. I love Alec the Duke and how they try so hard to understand and meet Kendra halfway. And the murder mystery! I didn't know who the killer was till the very end. A must-read! Can't wait to read the next Kendra installment. Will leave review on a Goodreads and Amazon |

I enjoyed the first book and so, came to this one with a little trepidation - would it live up to the promise of the premise of book one? It did, and with a great deal of panache. Loved the mystery plot - it was twisty and satisfying, but more than that, loved the character development as we see Kendra beginning to grapple with how she will have to adjust if she is to remain in Regency England, unable to return to her former life. I was not disappointed and will certainly consider book three (please please) a must read. |
I loved A Murder in Time and was completely riveted by the latest book in the series, A Twist in Time. The writing is excellent and the story fast paced and completely believable. I have read many regency and period novels and never thought of the aspects and effects of the role of the woman in that time period. This book was excellent in highlighting the lack of freedom and utter dependency that was the fate of women in those times. The mystery and suspense were extremely well done and it kept me guessing until the very end. This book was well worth the wait. |

Julie MeElwain has done it again!! I've been looking forward to this book since I finished A MURDER IN TIME, and A TWIST IN TIME is well worth the wait. Kendra, Alec, Duke, Rebecca, and Sam are all back in fine form. McElwain does a superb job of balancing Kendra's passion for solving crimes and her frustration with life two centuries before her time. The necessary language translations for both periods between Kendra and the other characters often add humor to the plot. Setting this book in London was another challenge well met by McElwain. Thanks to Pegasus Books and NetGalley for letting me get my Kendra fix before publication. I can hardly wait to see what happens next! |

Thank you. Enjoyed it. Good read. Will get copies for family and friends. |
oh lordy i struggled through this one. which totally bums me out because i really enjoyed the first one. i felt like the first one was a good mix of present day - holy crap i'm in the past - okay stuff is going on - with a smidge of romance. this one was... no resolution of the whole i'm in the past thing, nothing really on the romance side (ok, i know, but more would have been nice, like actually developing their relationship not just their sexual relationship) and way too much on the murder. i sound like i'm complaining, i don't mean to be. i guess i just expected more, or something. it felt very middle book-ish to me, and i am super super super hoping for a 3rd, so just because i didn't love this one doesn't mean i won't be itching for the next one. |
