I didn't really enjoy this book too much. The writing was amateurish with pages and pages of fluff not needed for the plot. The story was slow and boring and none of the characters were likable. I thought the ending was stupid and extremely unrealistic.

Thank you to NetGalley, Bookouture and Jess Ryder for a copy of "Lie to Me" in exchange of an honest review.

I thought this book was interesting, and it had a good pace, but the ending was so abrupt! It drives me crazy when authors do that. Overall a decent book until the ending.

I was hooked in from the very first page of this gripping, fast paced story of secrets, relationships and betrayals. The story flips back and forth between Meredith`s story which is set in the present day and Cara`s which is set back in 1984. There is also a number of present day chapters throughout the book that are told from the point of view of Christopher Jay who was Cara`s boyfriend. Although the story is told from the point of view of more than one character the chapters are named and the story is easy to follow, although I would prefer just one view point. The characters are realistic and believable, I liked Meredith and poor mixed up Cara.

The mystery of who killed Cara is intriguing and kept me guessing until the final surprising reveal. I did figure out one of the twists there was other twists that I definitely didn't see coming. I really enjoyed this thrilling debut

LIE TO ME was not the one for me. I did not find the premise at all believable and it ended abruptly, with no real resolution. I hate that.

Lie to Me tells the story of Meredith, a young woman, who discovers a mysterious videotape of her and her mother (now missing) from when she was a young child. The video shows disturbing behavior from her mother who had been plagued with mental health issues. Based on what Meredith sees in the video, she starts investigating a murder from years ago attempting to figure out how her mothers past is connected to the crime.

This one definitely kept me guessing which is the best part of a mystery. I also loved how it each chapter was told from a different characters point of view and the interwoven time periods.

I received this in exchange for an honest review via NetGalley.

This was a mystery about Meredith, a woman who is curious about her mother’s disappearance and how it connects to a videotape she finds that has clues to an old murder case.

I found the story interesting but kind of bland. Nothing exciting really happened. There was one twist that I didn’t see coming but the other ones were pretty predictable. The story jumps back and forth between the present and the past, before the murder takes place. I liked that but you never actually get to witness the murder take place, which is a missed opportunity.

All in all, I’d still recommend this book to anyone interested in a mystery because it still has its moments.

I didn't intend to review this book after reading it awhile ago, because I've never believed in writing a bad review for something that was generously given to me without me having to pay for it. But I don't know how to ask Net Galley what they prefer. Checking other reviews and seeing that I'm not alone in my feelings, I'm posting this, anyway. The story didn't captivate me, nor did the writing. I usually am reading three different books at a time, and the others were so much more interesting that I'd have a hard time returning to this one. The cliff-hanger at the end didn't help me like it more, either.

overall an okay read. This book for me started with a hiss and a roar and I was quite excited to read it, I did find some of the situations Meredith found herself in unconvincing and I found myself eye rolling at parts. There were definitley twists scattered througout but not enough to keep the momentum that the book started with going.

This was British author, Jess Ryder's first novel. Meredith ends up watching a short home video of her schizophrenic mother, Becca, who she hasn't seen in years. This video ends up changing her entire life.

This was a very good read, hard to put down. An excellent thriller novel. I am definitely looking forward to reading the next book Jess Ryder comes up with!

I would recommend this book!

This is a steadily paced thriller that's more about family secrets than any twists or turns people keep expecting these days in a read. The past and present views from Meri and Cara was a little confusing at first because I just couldn't see the connection... and then it all came together!

A gripping read that is more character based than crime based... and done well in that department. Digging into the deep recesses of the mind and how while we all have secrets... some of them come to the surface and make a huge and dark impact on everyone around you.

Definitely looking forward to more from this author.

Weird. That's the only word I can come up with to describe this book. But it was a good kind of weird. It was a very different thriller, but not really. I enjoy thrillers, but I have to push myself to read them. After procrastinating for months, I finally picked Lie to Me, and it surely wasn't as bad as I thought it would be.

It had a very gripping plotline that kept jumping at me with plot twists. The characters though, they weren't as gripping. Meri was okay, but the reasoning behind her actions was often really annoying to me. She was TWENTY-NINE but acted as if she was a spoiled fifteen year-old teen. Maybe that's just me, but it bothered me to no end. The rest of the cast was just fine. They were entertaining to read about, but there was something missing. All of them were unreliable, which I liked, since this is a psychological thriller. But there wasn't a connection. I read for the plot, not the characters.

It had a very interesting narration. Meredith's point of view was always first person. Then, we got eight chapers from Cara's POV in third person; the eight months leading to her death. Later on, Jay gets a few chapters of his own, but in third person. The way the author managed to shift from perspective to perspective was captivating. Not everyone can do that right , and as a major fan of first person POV, I really liked it.

Even though the mystery almost made me fall off my bed sometimes, I started thinking. I didn't see it coming, but thinking back, it was obvious. Worst detective in the planet, remember? It was SUPER predictable, and I'm pretty sure thriller fans will finish this book feeling unimpressed. Everything was revealed greatly, but it took the most convenient turns. This is not for everyone. At all.

It was extremely enjoyable, but there are a lot of things I disliked. Long chapters, flat characters, the predictability of it all, and there were a ton of comments that rubbed me the wrong way. I'm probably just sensitive, but there was a lot of offensive remarks. Also, sexualities/coming-out journies are NOT plot twists and should never be.

Lie to Me wasn't bad, It was very different, considering my reading taste. Comparing it to The Girl on the Train is a little bit of a stretch. I'd recommend it to readers venturing into thrillers and folks who get scared easiliy. Avid mystery-thriller readers should stay away, as they'll probably end up in the hole of disappointment.

Thank you to Bookouture for providing me an ARC of this book in exchange of an honest review.

Thanks to netgalley for the opportunity to have read this entertaining debut read by Ms Ryder.
Meredith comes across an old VHS tape, and her father's reaction to her discovery piqued her interest (as it would mind). On the tape her mother mentions a friend, and a possible murder. Obviously Meredith can't let it be, and becomes very involved in finding out the truth. Very very good read! Recommended.

This book was just Okay for me. I didn't feel overly engaged in it.

While Meredith is helping her Dad to clear out his attic she discovers a box of her old baby things but more intriguingly a VHS tape with her name on it , despite her Dad going totally off the deep end and asking her to throw it on the fire she of course watches it , on it her mother missing for 30 years and a young Meredith . From this moment I was intrigued and couldn't put this down , I raced through looking for the answers . How is Meredith somehow linked to a 30 year old murder , where s her mother . I liked how the story played out and how it was told from the 3 points of view , Meredith , Cara and Jay this was all done very seamlessly and the story flowed well . A brilliant debut and I will look forward to the next . Thank you for the opportunity to read this.

Lie to Me started off well and had me intrigued. The MC was likeable enough, inquisitive and determined to find out answers, which was fine by me because I too wanted answers. To begin with, the story played out at a reasonable pace. I enjoyed the alternating narrators telling their stories, regularly switching between Meredith and Cara, the deceased woman who has links to Meredith's missing mother, Becca.

Somewhere around the 60% mark, I began to lose interest. The story was dragging on a little and some of the secondary characters were obnoxious and annoying. I ended up skimming through the rest of the story and didn't find the conclusion particularly fascinating.

Up until the 60% mark, I likely would have awarded Lie to Me 4 stars, but the latter part didn't quite deliver the same standard.

This is a great debut by Jess Ryder. The plot kept me guessing. The characters were believable. In my opinion, this is a solid book that you will gain much insight from.

Meredith’s entire world to falls apart when she watches a videotape of her four-year-old self with Becca, the mother she’s never known.
Meredith can’t believe what she seen on that videotape. Has her memory locked away the painful reality of her childhood? Is there any truth in the strange story her mother forced her to repeat?
Meredith is led to Darkwater Pool in search of answers. Darkwater Pool is the scene where a young woman, Cara, was murdered, over 30 years before. Is there a link between the victim & Meridith’s mom?

Thank you NetGalley, for this advanced copy in exchange for my honest opinion!
