This is a beautifully written elaborately complex plot about a woman, Susan Bentham, who has won the pools (this is before the days of Lotto) -a vast sum of nearly 1.5m. Within the space of a few days of the win, she has calmly and calculatingly decided how to spend the rest of her life without her philandering husband of whom she has endured 25 years of marriage.
This isn’t about domestic violence or abuse, just a woman whose life was put on hold when she was pregnant, coerced into marrying quickly, losing her baby and doing the bidding of Jeff her husband ever since and she just wanted to get some of her life back. She assumes that her husband will not realise how his life is going to change as he's too busy buying his dream Rolls Royce and setting his present mistress up in luxury. The moves she puts into place are very subtly done but towards the end, the “road to Damascus” moment becomes clear and I guarantee you will not see the ending coming.
There is black humour interspersed with emotionally dramatic moments and Ms Chaplin conveys to us a woman who has been a doormat to her husband and who is still attractive but wants to break free of her reins. An absolutely great read.
