Eternal Life features an intriguing story about a woman forced to live forever after making a bargain to give up her own death in order to save her young son. The portions of the book set in ancient Jerusalem were fascinating and featured a great deal of detail that truly opened up a very different time and place. The overall message about the beauty and necessity of death were poignant and offered a perspective we do not often get. However, I found the relationship between Rachel (the main character) and Elazar (her first love who is also doomed to live forever) confusing, since Rachel seemed to constantly change her stance towards him without my understanding her motivation. I also did not care about the present day storyline nearly as much as the one set in the past until the very end of the book. Overall a good book with a thought provoking concept and message.
