Sabrina meets Geek Girl with a touch of Clueless thrown in for good measure! Funny, enjoyable and the perfect book to read in one sitting. I’m gking straight in to book two! |
Great concept, just not what I was expecting and I found it hard to get into. |
I really enjoyed this book and looking forward to reading the sequel which I have already downloaded. I liked the characters especially Amber & Charlie. I loved the fact that the head cheerleader and Queen bee was a siren (a fantastic touch and one that made me love it even more!). The world building was fantastic and it kept my attention to the very end. I will definitely be recommending this to friends and making sure that this is on the library catalogue. |
I received this arc from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. This book was not what I thought it was when I first requested it on NetGalley. I thought it was the story of a girl who happens to have matchmaking powers, who goes on her own adventure through her city in order to achieve some kind of personal goal. Instead, Miss Match is actually just the story of a girl that is a matchmaker, with special powers, living in a world where magic is ordinary. Her mother is a witch, her best friend can see the future, and they're all running around trying to find a missing magical creature that seems to have (pretty much literally) stolen the heart of a family friend). Amber Sand is the titular matchmaker of this novel, and she is a really well rounded, interesting main character. I think some of her characteristics are a little juvenile, considering her age (which I think is around sixteen/seventeen), but she still manages to be likeable. Most of the story centres around her complicated relationship with her witch mum, and her worry that her less powerful magical power will somehow make her less important in the eyes of Chicago's magical population. I honestly didn't understand the need to make Amber live in a world of magic - I think it would have worked much, much better to just have her have this weird, unsourceable power that seems completely out of place in an otherwise normal world. Something like a matchmaking power, or the ability to see soulmate bonds, could definitely work in that kind of scenario, and would probably have made for a much more interesting story. One of the main themes of this novel (probably the number one main theme) was the concept that soulmates sometimes just don't actually work together, even though they technically should. I am a hopeless romantic at the best of times, and after reading ACOMAF my slightly strange obsession with soulmates has just become even worse. However, I did really love this part of the story, as it's not something I think I've ever come across, in YA or any other genre. Overall, I gave this a solid 3 stars, as I did enjoy the characters, and the central message of the story, although the world could have been missed out and I would have been much happier with this. |
Amber lives in the world of the supernatural. Mingled in her local community are vampires, sirens, werewolf’s…top that off with the fact her mum is a witch, oh and Amber herself is a matchmaker. All Amber need a do is look into someone’s eyes and she can see someone’s soul mate, the only downside to this power? She can’t see her own happily ever after. It’s a great skill to have until she finds herself falling her classmate Charlie. He replicates her feeling but sadly Amber can she that she is not his happily ever after. I absolutely loved the idea of this book. I think its such an interesting concept that Amber can see people’s soul mates but then goes hurdling full speed ahead towards someone who she knows isn’t supposed to be with her. Honestly, this book wasn’t what I was expecting. Is that a bad thing? Definitely not! I went into this novel expecting a cheesy romance novel between Amber and Charlie but this certainly isn’t what this book is – and I absolutely loved that! You’re thrown into a world of supernatural creatures and it was fascinating to read all about the weird and wonderful people living near Amber. The book really revolves around the kidnapping of Charlie’s potential step mum to be and how Charlie enlists Ambers help to find her, the romance just sort of builds up on the side. If you like me, you enjoy reading about a fantasy world where you’re living amount wizards/vampires and other ghoulies then you will really enjoy this book, the romance element is just a nice added bonus. Amber is a great character. She does everything she can to help people and she stands up for herself and others she cares about and for me that makes her a joy to read about. Ok, she makes she daft decisions but the way she bumbles through just adds to her character really. Charlie is wonderful too. His heart is so clearly in the right place and just like Amber he seems to do anything to help those that he cares about. To be completely honest this book wasn’t an instant love. It did take me a few chapters to get into the story. I’m not sure if it’s because it’s a relatively slow burner but I did have to persevere a little until I got hooked. However, once I did get hooked, I found myself reading this book until far too late to be up reading books on a work night! Then once I found myself completely hooked, the book ended and I pretty much threw my kindle down with sheer frustration with how it ended! Thankfully, I have now discovered book number two so I’ll be eagerly downloaded. If you enjoy fantasy books with a romantic element I think that you will love this book. Once you get gripped to this book, I can guarantee you will love it! |

I came into this book expecting a cute, fluffy romance story. What I didn't expect was a really compelling urban fantasy adventure. There were so many great little touches in the world building: I laughed so much over the head cheerleader being a siren. Amber Sands was such a great character. I loved her snark so much and I couldn't help but feel my heart break a little over how her powers worked so the more she spent time with someone, the more she saw their soulmate. My one criticism would be that the issue of her powers in relation to her relationships was never really resolved, but hopefully in the next book, we'll get more of an idea about how Amber's powers work and if the soulmates she sees are always 100% accurate. |
Miss Match was a fantastic start to a bran new series, one I had not anticipated to like so much and one I absolutely loved. From the easy to read writing and the brilliant heroine, all the way to the powerful message it emphasizes, which can be applied in so many different and deeper levels. But, first things first... Amber Sand is the descendant of a long ancestry of witches. But, she isn't one herself. However, she does have a unique magical gift. She is a matchmaker. She has learnt to believe that everything is set to stone and once a love match has been declared, it is the only and absolute truth. And, that book was all about slowly witnessing her realization that things aren't always so solid and concrete. In fact, her gift will even prove to wrongfully match two people right in front of her eyes. And, what about the matter of the heart? Sometimes, this is the organ that makes all the decisions, and doesn't really rely on the Fates. Amber herself, is a strong character, one I grew to completely like, and one I trusted even if I suspected that some of her choices wouldn't turn out in the best possible ways. I loved her relationship with her best friend, Amani, who is in fact another supernatural, as she can 'see' the future, and a person that has been constantly mysterious about Amber's future. Which only served to exhilarate me even more, trying to catch the smallest of hints throughout the book. The plot was very interesting, and I loved the fact that all the magic was taking place in Chicago, amidst all the standard and 'normal' craziness of the city. Amber's classmates were your typical non-supernatural beings, calling our heroine a freak and not believing in magic, unless it suited their purposes to ask her to confirm a match, and unless there was a confirmation of their current boyfriend being the one. I will definitely be keeping an eye out for the second book of the series, because I can already tell just how much I will miss Amber and her crazily amazing life. All in all, 5 stars for a book that deeply mesmerized me and made me devour it, unable to leave it down for more than five minutes. |
Amber has a gift, she can see who someone's life match is within seconds of looking into their eyes, whether she wants to or not. Spending all her time seeing glimpses of others future partners and the happy moments they will share together is making this teen feel more and more alone every day. With her best friend who has a different gift, the ability to see into the future, they understand each other in a way that bothers around don't. Amber lives in a different reality to those around her at school, her mum is a witch and she can see the paranormal creatures who walk among everyone in day to day life. When the most desired boy in school asks for her help to find someone who is missing, Amber introduces him to her world and she opens up her own heart to him. |
