Excellent story line which was gripping from start to finish. Great characters. I would highly recommend this book.

Very disturbing but a bit too slow and meandering for me.
What is a cult like? How do people get involved in the first place? Imagine it being on a small, isolated island somewhere off the Swedish coast?
Bbrr. Some very chilling moments and ideas explored here. I would have liked more depth in characters reasoning and inner thoughts however as I felt some of the plot points skimmed the surface.
Chilling and VERY evocative writing though. Very well translated. Thank goodness Fog Island doesn 't really exist....or does it?

This fantastically terrifying book had me completely gripped! I could hardly bear to put it down and read long into the night. Best book I've read in a long time. 10/10

Sofia is just coming out of a difficult relationship & vulnerable when she first meets Franz Oswald. She loves his New Age theories and takes up the offer of a job creating the library at the commune that Oswald has set up. However the tranquility is soon shattered as outsiders question the cult and strange happenings lead Sofia to question her decision to live in the commune.
The major problem with this is the language. It is just so bland. The vocabulary is quite ordinary with very little richness. The descriptions are also quite dull making things seem very two dimensional as opposed to three dimensional. I presume that this book was translated from the original Swedish so it is possible that the rich descriptive language has been lost in translation. Alternatively it may never have been there in the first place.
The lack of description also affected the characters. None of them felt that real and I never felt that they came to life. Sofia was a particular problem as she seemed to change her opinion of Oswald at the drop of a hat. In fact she seems to change her mind frequently - she decides she can trust no one and then she pours her heart out to Simon. One minute she is very against Oswald and the Cult and the next she is standing up for him. I didn't understand her character which was possibly because I never felt that I knew her or felt that she was real. To be honest Sofia is quite a boring person with little signs of a strong character.
Although the setting and characters are quite bland, I did like the idea of the book. Although there was little suspense achieved, the author did gradually build up the changing situation within the cult. We saw it progress from a happy commune to something altogether more sinister.
This is one of those books that has a good concept but poor execution. I have just realised that this is a trilogy - I don't intend to read the second and third books.
I received a free copy of this book via Netgalley

The Cult on Fog Island by Mariette Lindstein is a story about Sofia who falls for the charismatic Franz who runs a retreat on Fog Island. Sophie visits the island and decides to stay and work there but has she bitten off more that she can cope with and will she be allowed to leave?
I was clear to me from the start that something wasn't right and there were creepy underlying motives with the organisers of this group.
I would like to thank NetGalley and Harlequin UK for my e-copy in exchange for an honest review.

fantastic book, great characters and it is a slow burner but enjoyable
