Love Goldberg's writing style. Sharp, witty fun.
Violent, dark, mesmerizing
An excellent noir series with unforgettable protagonist

Unusually, I seriously struggled to get into this at all, or to engage with any of the characters. The first third of the book feels like relentless exposition, an endless stream of back-story of people and places without anything actually happening. I'd expected fast-paced, snappy pulp noir, something hardboiled and punchy. Instead it felt like wading through treacle while waiting for the actual story to actually start.
I rarely give up on a book, but this one defeated me. I didn't engage with the plot (actually, I don't think I reached a point where it was obvious that there was a plot), and the central character left me stone cold.
