Thank you to NetGalley and Quarto Publishing Group – Race Point Publishing for This Old Gal’s Pressure Cooker Cookbook by Jill Selkowitz. I really liked the recipes in this book and it helped make me less scared of my pressure cooker. This book starts with pressure cooking tips and essential tips and tools which were very helpful. The book then goes into the recipes broken up by categories such as Breakfast, Chicken Dinners, Indian Meals (my favorite chapter), Desserts, etc. The book is filled with lots of great recipes; my favorites are: Bruschetta Chicken with Zoodles, Balsamic-Spiced Apple Pork Tenderloin, Cali-Mex Stuffed Peppers, Egg Roll in a Bowl, Pad See Ew Bowl, Chicken Tikka Masala with Butter Rice and Peas, Murgh Makhani (Indian Butter Chicken), Chicken Piccata, Vegetarian Frijoles (Refried Beans), and Corn on the Cob.

This book is full of variety, with easy to follow recipes using easy to find ingredients, that make great tasting food. The only thing missing is pictures of each recipes; there were not enough pictures of the recipes only about one out of three recipes have a picture. Other than that, this book is great and highly recommended, especially if, like me, you have been afraid of your pressure cooker.

Some great fun recipes for your pressure cooker. I liked the mixture of recipes and length or times it takes to cook them and to prep them. As obviously it depends on days and personal plans.

This book contains recipes for very approachable, family favorites. The instructions were clear, and the tips on how to go from freezer to InstantPot were helpful.

Pressure cooking, especially in the newer Instant Pots, is all the rage, and there are dozens of cookbooks out there to choose from. Jill Selkowitz, creator of the popular blog This Old Gal has done an excellent job filling this cookbook with recipes that real people will actually want to cook. The recipes are well-written and easy to follow, and so far, every recipe tried has turned out picture perfect.

Even though recipes made in the pressure cooker and Instant Pot are generally faster, some of the recipes in this cookbook have very long lists of ingredients. Gathering ingredients together and then measuring can generally take a bit of time. However, in every case so far, the end results have been definitely worth it. There are photographs of most of the dishes, which make them even more mouthwatering.

Favorite recipes from this book include both Greek Meatballs and Vietnamese-Style Meatballs in Sauce, as well as Indian Butter Chicken and Orange Glazed Pork Chops. Risotto lovers will welcome the recipe for Wild Mushroom Risotto (very quick and easy in the Instant Pot), and the Mexican Pork Carnitas are delicious. Selkowitz has included some excellent homemade seasoning mixes, as well as sauces such as basic Spaghetti Sauce, Sweet and Sour Sauce, and Tzatziki Sauce. There are recipes from all parts of the globe, so cooks can avoid the same-same at dinnertime. There is an excellent recipe for basic mashed potatoes that works perfectly every time, and of course, the instructions for making hard-boiled eggs perfectly without a green ring, that peel easily.

Quite honestly, you can't go wrong with this cookbook. It is one that will be used over and over because there is enough variety to keep cooks and their families and friends happy for years to come. This cookbook is excellent.

Special thanks to NetGalley for supplying a review copy of this book.

This Old Gal's Pressure Cooker Cookbook is packed full of recipes for new and old comfort food favorites. With the addition of pressure cooker preparation, these recipes are tasty and convenient.

One thing I really liked about this cookbook was the addition of a large number of ethnic favorites. Hot and sour soup is one of the things I always order in a new-to-me Chinese restaurant. This version of the standard ubiquitous spicy soup was a perfect blend of spicy and succulent. It's -definitely- on the standard family recipe list now. This version is vegetarian friendly and nicely spicy but not overly so.

Beef and broccoli is another one of those Chinese restaurant standards that very few people bother to make at home. The recipe in this collection is a nice substitute. We honestly didn't find it exactly like the restaurant version, but it was certainly a wholesome (and cost effective) substitute.

The third tryout from this collection in our case was another ethnic recipe... in this case sweet and sour stuffed cabbage. I hail from a very 'mixed' family and this eastern European/Jewish dish was a staple comfort food from my childhood and my wonderful stepmom. I have such fond memories of this dish growing up and this version is wonderful.

I review a fair number of cookbooks and this one was really great. Well prepared flavorful dishes made from easily sourced raw materials. There is a really wide variety of cultural cuisine covered, from Jewish to Asian to fusion to good ol' American. The photography is well done and the dishes themselves are superlative.

I find nothing at all to detract from this being a useful staple cookbook in the kitchen.

Five stars. I'm going to try all of these.

This is a delightful cookbook filled with delicious and unusual recipes using the pressure cooker. Having very little experience with a pressure cooker and grown up hearing how dangerous they were, I was a little hesitant to try it. The descriptions describe using an electric pressure cooker, but I used a range-top one.
I made the Greek Meatballs and they were delicious and not your ordinary meatball recipe in that it contains vinegar and lemon. There is a picture of each recipe. Included are ethnic recipes including Thai food (a favorite of mine), Indian recipes, and cornbread. I highly recommend this book.

We got an Instant Pot as a wedding gift, and since then, it's been fun to see what kinds of things we can cook up in it. While there are lots of internet recipes out there, the genre of Instant Pot cookbooks is still emerging. I've never visited This Old Gal's food blog, but I was excited to find a collection of recipes designed for the Instant Pot, and judging by her enthusiastic fan base online, this was sure to be a winner.

However, once I started flipping through the recipes, I was less impressed. The recipes are all comfort food, but after reading the book from start to finish, they all started sounding the same. For instance, she has multiple chili-like recipes and multiple meatball recipes, neither of which are things I cook often. There are a lot of recipes invoking classic American TV dinners, such as Salisbury steak, beef stroganoff, and pot roast. There are a lot of Asian-ish dinners, such as a thit nuong that isn't grilled, egg roll in a bowl, and orange pepper chicken.

I can't put my finger on what it is, but I didn't find most of the recipes appealing. I only bookmarked about 15 recipes out of numerous. Out of the ones I bookmarked, none of them really inspire me to get in the kitchen and cook. That's unfortunate, because I really wanted to like this book.

Recipe variety and type aside, I admire her dedication to recreating authentic ethnic dishes, such as galbitang and matar paneer. She has a section dedicated to Jewish dishes, which is also totally unique. The layout is eye-catching, but I think the photography could use some work. There are less photos than I would like, and the ones that are included are not styled as professionally as in comparable cookbooks.

Overall, while I can see this appealing to many people, it just wasn't my cup of tea.

For anyone with an Instant Pot (or any other brand pressure cooker), this is a great recipe book to inspire and instruct you to create some brilliant meals.

I love the variety of cuisines this book covers - there's recipes from so many countries including Greek, Indian, Italian, Vietnamese, Thai and many others! The instructions are clear, the photos are inspiring and there are some handy notes to accompany the recipes which I imagine would be useful whether you barely use your pressure cooker or you're a seasoned pro.

As is usual for a pressure cooker cookbook, a lot of these recipes are meat-based (as with meat the pressure cooker really comes into its own), so if you do eat a lot of meat this book will be right up your street! If you're veggie or vegan you'll be a lot more restricted, of course, but there are still some tasty recipes you can try out from this book and I found some I'll definitely be giving a go soon. There are also some surprising recipes, such as desserts that I never imagined you could cook in a pressure cooker!

I'm really impressed with this book, it definitely makes pressure cooking seem clearer, and think it would be an excellent gift to yourself or others!

Chock full of recipes (120 to be exact) from comfort food to a wide range of cultural dishes, this is a good resource for InstantPot cooking. Practical tips for pressure cooker newbies and good reminders for the more seasoned can be found in the introduction and as notes bulleted below a number of the recipes.

Jill got my attention immediately with the Seasonings, Sauces and More chapter. I love putting together my own seasonings, knowing exactly what it is in the mix and that is where I started. The seafood seasoning and tog house seasoning are now staples in my pantry. The tog house seasoning is so versatile.

My family loved the Bruschetta Chicken with Noodles - simple, low-carb and gluten-free. Ever so tasty and I was able to use a lot of my fresh basil leaves. The Low-Country Pulled Pork recipe includes not only the recipe for the pork, but also coleslaw, rub and ‘mop sauce.’ Most of the ingredients I already had on hand. I tempered the spice and the flavors were still robust and melded beautifully.

Although there are many more recipes I plan to try, there are a number that sound yummy but my sensitive stomach wouldn’t be able to handle, those containing heat and spice. Those who enjoy spicy cooking will find a plethora of choices. To name a few, Taiwanese Three-Cup Chicken, Rojo Fiesta Chicken and Cuban Garlic Pork with Mojo Sauce.

This Old Gal’s Pressure Cooker Cookbook by Jill Selkowitz
I bought my Instant Pot on a whim during Amazon Prime Day two years ago. That’s when I found This Old Gal’s website. Jill’s recipes basically taught me how to use my new gadget. Her recipes are still my go-to for reliable consistent results from my Instant Pot. Her new book includes many of those original recipes and lots of new choices as well.

I love to read cookbooks like novels - and yes, my family thinks I'm weird. This one is one that, having read an arc of, I will definitely be adding to my shelves. The recipes are intriguing and varied, and they all sound excellent. The only nitpicks I have - there is a taco recipe, and having used in IP for a while now, there is absolutely no benefit to making standard tacos in an IP. In fact, it will take longer. The other thing is that, for some, the ingredients will be a little more difficult to source. Amazon is often an option in that case, but there will be those who can't just run to their neighborhood store or a local ethnic store for the supplies.

Overall, this is an awesome cookbook, and I look forward to having my own copy on my shelves!

I enjoyed thumbing through this cookbook. There are some really good recipes here. The pressure cooker is a forgotten art.

I received an advanced copy of this book to review through NetGalley. I was extremely surprised by the recipe contents within the book. The range of recipes is truly amazing. They include American, Italian, Chinese, Hawaiian, Thai, Jewish, Indian and more. I did not have an opportunity to try all the recipes in the book but the majority of the ones I tried were successful. I did have a few blunders in the beginning using the potato starch on chicken but after a few more tries and reading the instructions better, the results were better. My husband's favorite is still the French dip sandwiches. There are some recipes that I never heard of such as the Luchen Kugel, and matzo lasagna. And I may never try them but I truly enjoyed the book.
