They Story of Axel and Betty was gorgeous. It was not an easy ride for these two and they had their share of stumbling blocks. However through it all they managed to fix themselves and find each other. It is a well written book and it explores Iceland in a way that makes you want to book a flight.

I love a good medical romance, and this was a very good example of the genre. I particularly liked that the author took us out of the normal setting and headed to Iceland.

Thank you to Mills & Boon Insiders and to NetGalley for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I really, really enjoyed this book. Right from the start I felt interested in the characters and wanted to know how their story would develop. The plot was drawn well and all details were interesting and contributed to the story. More from this author please!

Rating 4.5/5*
This is a real page turner read, with a talented surgeon, Betty Jacinth, travelling to work in Iceland for three months, just like her father did decades before. She’s going now because she’s ready for a change after the untimely death of her father and discovering that her now ex-boyfriend - and manipulative boss who used her skills and undermined her self belief to promote himself - is marrying someone else. When she arrives in Iceland she’s met by Dr Axel Sturlusson, someone she’ll be working with and whose father was close friends with her own.

Alex has issues of his own to contend with. He was the sole survivor of an incident in which his beloved older brother perished. Alex is suffering from PSTD and survivor guilt as well as trying to bring up his orphaned teenage niece, Eira, and cope with his own father’s awful attitude and behaviour to them both. Whilst he initially resents being given the added responsibility of sorting things out for Betty, she soon brightens the lives of both Alex and Eira. However, she’s only staying for three months. Can they overcome their fears and give their love a chance? You’ll have to read it yourself to discover what happens!

This is the first book I’ve read that has been set in Iceland and now I’d really like to visit to see if it is as lovely as the author’s great descriptions suggest. It is an engaging read that I didn’t want to put down. There are so many emotional barriers to this romance and just how they can be overcome make it an enthralling read. I’ll definitely be looking out for more by this author in future and have no hesitation in highly recommending this book to anyone who enjoys medical romances or stories where someone regains their confidence and is able to stand up for themselves again!

I requested and was given a copy of this book, via NetGalley. This is my honest review of the book after choosing to read it.

Betty is desperate to escape the clutches of her ex boyfriend who is also her boss. Given the chance to go too Iceland for a few months. Its a welcome reprieve from her user ex. Axel is given the task to meet Betty at the airport and see her safely to her new home. Axel has his own issues to deal with, suffering from PTSD after the death of his brother, he feels like he should have been the one that died. Instead he is alive and looking after his orphan niece. His father is aloof to both him and Eira.
All four are in desperate need of healing. As Axel and Betty spend time together they start to warm up to each other. Its going to take some working through the issues holding them back. Before they can find their happy ever after. ARC received from NetGalley as part of the Mills & Boon insiders team. In exchange for a honest review.

Betty Jacinth lives in New York and is a surgeon who specialises in laparoscopic surgery. She's recently had her heart broken by a fellow surgeon who used her in his bid to better his own career. When an opportunity arises for Betty to work in Iceland for 3 months she decides she needs to get away from her ex and the toxic environment work has become so she jumps at the chance.

Dr Axel Sturlusson looks like a Viking, all 6 foot 2 inches of blonde gorgeousness. Behind his cool facade, he is suffering. He lost his brother in an accident which killed everybody involved except him. He knows his father, Dr Sturl Sturlusson, blames him for living instead of his brother. That coupled with the PTSD he struggles with, plus taking on the guardianship of his late brother's daughter makes for a brooding, broken man.

When Axel meets Betty she is like a breath of fresh air to him. Gorgeous, sassy, clever and an excellent surgeon. When his father asked him to look after her, show her the ropes etc he was fuming because he suspected that his father was just keeping him from what he does best, surgery. The more time he spends with Betty the more he grows to like her, especially when she seems to really enjoy spending time with his niece who has been very sullen since her father's death. She brings a brightness to both of their lives.

Sadly with the emotional baggage that Betty and Axel both have they struggle to even admit to themselves let alone each other that they could be falling for each other. Is there too much in the way for them to overcome? Could they have a happy ever after despite the odds?

This book was a great read. I loved that is set in Iceland and how the author describes so well the beauty of the place. There is even a scene involving the Northern Lights and a certain couple having a much longed for kiss. I don't know what I enjoyed more, picturing the lights, or being happy about the kiss happening! The medical jargon and cases in the story were great, everything from a young girl starting her period, to heart surgery. It all made for interesting reading. Then, of course, there was the budding romance between Axel and Betty to enjoy. I loved every moment of the angst, soul-searching and yes, eventual happiness. I did, however, feel that the ending was a little rushed with everything coming to its conclusion within the last 5 minutes of the book. BUT at least there was an epilogue which I very much enjoyed, so I can't complain too much!

Book Review: NY Doc Under The Northern Lights (M&B Medical).

NY Doc Under The Northern Lights is a Mills & Boon Medical romance, written by Amy Ruttan. Betty Jacinth is a larascopic surgeon who has relocated from New York to Iceland for a 3 month secondment to recover from a broken heart after a fellow surgeon used their relationship to further his own career. Dr Axel Sturlusson is struggling to come to terms with the face that he is the only survivor of an accident that killed most of his family, including his brother, he is bringing up his brother's daughter, his own father wishes he had died not his brother and combine all these issues with a stressful job. Slowly Axel melts and admits his attraction to Betty. A spanner, however, is thrown in the works, when her ex turns up and begs her to go back to NYC with him. Will she follow her heart or go back home?

I don't normally enjoy Medical romances as it is difficult to get the right balance between the two so the storyline does not become cluttered and lose the reader's attention. This novel gets the balance right and also has some great descriptions of Icelandic scenery is in there as well!

Enjoyable, feisty and well researched! A typical Amy Ruttan romance. Both characters have had major incidents, though different, in their lives that affect them emotionally and socially but gradually barriers break down and trust grows between them.
An enjoyable read.

Perfect Light Reading, 4 Stars 🌟
Surgeon Betty Jacinth has decided it's time to escape her boss and ex boyfriend Thomas and accept an open invitation from her late father's friend Dr. Sturlusson Sr for a 3 month sabbatical in his hospital in Reykjavik, Iceland. Betty needs this time away from Thomas to heal her broken heart, find herself and find out just what she is capable of achieving out of Thomas's shadow. However, she doesn't expect to be met at the airport by Dr. Axel Sturlusson Jr, six foot plus of brooding Viking male who within minutes of meeting Betty sweeps her off her (in his opinion) ridiculous heels!
Axel is no stranger to responsibility; since his older brother’s death in a helicopter crash whilst they were working in Iceland's tactical Navy, he has been suffering with survivor's guilt and PTSD, as a result he has had to give up his job in the Navy and now works at his father's hospital as a surgeon and become guardian to his orphaned teenage niece Eira. So Axel doesn't need the added responsibility of babysitting his father's friends daughter, Betty, during her sabbatical in Iceland. But Betty and her ridiculous heels quickly work there way into Axel and Eira's life making Axel begin to feel again and to look to the future, so that when Betty’s past turns up in Iceland to bring her back to New York can Axel overcome his fears to go after Betty and embrace a deserving HEA!
This was my first book from Ms. Amy Ruttan and I thoroughly enjoyed her writing style and the subjects covered however, I did feel there were areas where the book was a little rushed, but it didn't detract from my enjoyment of the book and I will be looking forward to her future releases.
If you enjoy the Medical genre then Ms. Amy Ruttans latest book NY Doc Under the Northern Lights is the perfect light read for a long cold winter's night, with a cup of hot chocolate or even a glass wine, whilst curled up on the sofa under a cosy blanket, you too can fall in love under the Northern Lights along with Betty and Axel in the picturesque Island Country of Iceland.
I received my copy from Netgalley and Mills and Boon via Mills and Boon Insiders, but this does not influence my opinions as all opinions are my own.

The story is cute and all, but I found it a bit too formulaic, could anticipate the twists and turns a mile away. The characters were not very well developed and we do not find much about them besides their inner turmoil and sexual desires, and I would've wanted to get to know them on a deeper level than that. I had some issues with the heroine who was in constant need of saving despite screaming that she was an independent woman, she struggled to hold her own until the very end. Axel also lacked depth, we do not find out more about him besides his work and the tragedy that changed his life, and it's a shame because he could've been developed into someone better than a sexy viking with a sad past!

For me, the medical side as well was not very interesting and it felt more of a prop for the romance, than equal parts to the story, and didn't feel real to me. I am a huge fan of medical romance, but this one did not do it for me, which is a shame

2.5 stars.

Enjoyable short read, set mainly in Iceland. It made me want to fly off to Iceland now!
Betty is in Iceland escaping New York, where she works at a hospital with her ex. She meets Axel, another Dr at the hospital and even though she swears never to get involved with a work collegue again, soon she is spending far too much time with him and liking it!
