When I saw this book was available for request I knew I just had to have it! I love this author and her humor - I have read every single one of her books and am always prepared to giggle like a nut when reading. This book did not disappoint! I love the authors ability to weave a story full of laughter and love - you can't help but fill a genuine joy when reading her work.

Cute cozy mystery. Very predictable of course. Great for light reading. Not so much for intellectual.

I loved this next instalment of Angie Fox’s hugely fun Southern Ghost Hunter series.

Verity and Frankie were a brilliant team as always and we had a murder mystery on both ghostly and earthly sides this time.

The time spent in the Ghostly Adair estate was like stepping into a time capsule. Ellis was still a lovingly attentive boyfriend to Verity, Virginia was her usual charming self and Beau was fascinating as he tried to work out who he actually wanted to be.

I loved catching up with the residents of Sugarland again and eagerly await Frankie and Veritys next adventure.

I received this ARC via Netgalley in return for an honest review. This is the seventh in this series of the Southern Ghost Hunter Mysteries and the first that I've read. I thought the premise that Verity, who can see and interact with ghosts, solves a 1920s murder on a ruined local estate was a great idea. The ghosts must return every year to recreate the same three day weekend party, ala Great Gatsby, so a deceased inspector can solve the unsolved mystery of who killed a local judge and why. Because the deceased inspector requires the help of Frankie, a ghost who involuntarily must live with Verity, she is able to participate in the reenactments and engage with the ghosts at the party. In the 'regular' world, she also has to contend with hatred of the mother of her boyfriend, Ellis, and the ways that has impacted her life in their small town. Developed over previous stories, Verity had previously been engaged to Ellis' younger brother; broken up; Mom blames Verity and does everything she can to sabotage her life. Since Ellis works for the local police force, Verity's ability to see and interact with ghosts also causes him some problems with his colleagues. Ms. Fox does an excellent job of juggling all these components: I didn't lose the thread and, not having read the preceding books, was still able to follow all the plot threads. Nice job!

This was so great! It's kinda the same thing every book but this story was exciting and for me unpredictable. I enjoyed the twists and turns in the story along with some funny moments. I do wish there was a deeper relationship with Ellis, but this series really isn't a romance genre more just paranormal. Still loved every page, and even though cases wee solved there was a total lead deeper into Frankie, which I'm anxious to read.

PECAN PIES AND DEAD GUYS is the seventh book in the delightful cozy mystery series, Southern Ghost Hunter Mysteries. This book was great to read especially after my last read was pretty heavy. While PECAN PIES AND DEAD GUYS has some pretty grizzly murders and danger; I enjoy that it's complimented with the backdrop of small town gossip chains, Southern hospitality rules, and passive aggressive cattiness. I liked the ghostly mystery Verity and Frankie were pulled into and they make a pretty fun team of amateur detectives to explore spooky old mansions with.

The ghost mystery revolved around solving a murder that happened at a pretty cool 1920s era party. I enjoyed the concept of the party ghosts (and ghost animals!) being stuck at this party for decades until the murder is solved. There was a modern murder mystery that Verity and her boyfriend Ellis are dealing with at the same time which I wasn't a fan of partly because anytime we have to deal with Ellis' mom or brother I cringe. Ellis' mom is a horrible woman -who I disliked more than the big bad 1920s ghost- and Ellis' brother (Verity's ex) comes off as just really dumb. The modern mystery had some suspense and danger but I kept wanting to go back to the ghost party mystery. Both mysteries were wrapped up nicely but I felt more invested in the ghosts' plight than the live people in this book.

PECAN PIES AND DEAD GUYS shines when it focuses on Verity and Frankie's shenanigans solving the 1920s ghost party mystery but loses traction on the modern mystery. Not to say that I didn't enjoy this book. It was a blast to read and I love revisiting these characters except Ellis' mom.

3.5/5 stars. I so enjoy this series. Frankie needs Verity to help him investigate a 1920s unsolved murder so he can get out of confinement--on her property!--and avoid spending his afterlife in prison. Meanwhile Ellis needs Verity's help to talk to a ghost and Beau has a new girlfriend who his mother thinks has way too much influence over him. I thoroughly enjoyed the house party mystery and all its flamboyant characters and its contrast with the closer-to-home, frightening mystery. #PecanPiesAndDeadGuys #NetGalley

This series continues to be strong. This book was just as fun and engaging as the previous books in the series. Verity is growing as a character and evolving from a defeated wronged young woman into a determined good hearted survivor. In this most recent book Verity has to tangle with stalkers on the live and ghostly planes of existence. Verity’s ex-fiancé is struggling to grow as an individual and as a result of the growth of his emotional intelligence his mother, Virginia, has targeted Verity as the source of all evil. Verity meanwhile is working on her relationship with Ellis as it grows and develops out of the “honeymoon” phase. We begin to see some cracks in the relationship, making it more real. The question I have though is this the beginning of the end?

What a good, paranormal mystery! This was my first book in the Southern Ghost Hunters Mysteries. I usually don’t read books out of order but so many people spoke highly of this one, I decided to break my rule. I wasn’t disappointed. I thoroughly enjoyed it and plan to go back and read the others. Great likable characters, you’ll fall in love with Verity.

I received a review copy of this book from the publisher through NetGalley for my honest review. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

Synopsis from Publisher/NetGalley
Sometimes Verity Long would like to forget that she lives with the ghost of a 1920s gangster. But the reluctant housemates must once again work together when a dead detective blackmails Frankie into helping him solve a Great Gatsby-era cold case. Before she can say “bathtub gin,” Verity is dragged straight into a raging, otherworldly house party. Worse, every guest is hiding something.

Meanwhile, Ellis Wydell, Verity’s living, breathing boyfriend needs Verity’s help with a police case of his own. After a dead body is discovered near the pecan orchard, Verity gives her insights, thinking her job is done. But when mysterious pecan pies start arriving at her house, she wonders who might be thanking her… or stalking her.

Between hard-living ghosts and sugar-laden desserts, Verity has her work cut out for her. But will she uncover the secrets behind the pecan pies and dead guys? Or has she stumbled upon a recipe for disaster?

Good mystery story but I would not put this in the romance category ( where I found it) not much romance to speak of. While I found the characters interesting I felt the mystery was a bit predictable.

Another fun entry into the series. The characters have had some growth over the last few books - especially Beau and Virginia, Verity's biggest enemies. It was nice to see them all being more civil to one another.

I especially enjoyed the ghosts back-stories in this book. I feel like this time around there was more development, and more heart put into them than in previous books. Their sadness truly broke my heart, and I was happy for them to finally get their happy ending.

An enjoyable read all around!

This was a nice quick read. I liked the paranormal aspect but was hoping it could be a standalone book without confusion but I was still a tad lost in the beginning. The authors ability to create the 1920s world made it feel like a blast from the past. The ghosts and fun made it worth the little bit of confusion at the start.

Verity, Ellis and Frankie are back in another installment of this super entertaining series. Frankie has been drafted by Inspector de Clerq to help solve a very old murder on the ghostly plane. Ellis is also investigating a murder in real life. And Verity is helping them both while trying to deal with her ex Beau on the side.

I have really enjoyed reading this series so far. Verity and Frankie make a good and interesting investigative team, with lots of funny banter between them. Ellis is steadfast and calm and handsome as always.

In this story Verity is in very serious danger from a powerful ghost, but also from someone who is trying to kill her. But with Frankie’s help and Ellis’s unwavering support, she pulls through. The abandoned, haunted house that forms the scene of the unsolved murder provides for a very entertaining backdrop. The ghostly characters are interesting as well as the mystery that Verity is slowly unravelling.

It does seem that Sugarland has an abundance of abandoned, haunted buildings, but it makes for interesting stories, so I don’t mind it that much. The characters are fun. The conflict between Verity, Beau, and Virginia is getting a bit tiresome.

I would definitely recommend this as a fun easy read for paranormal fans.

I posted this review on Goodreads as well.

Fantastic. I really enjoyed this book in the series. They continue to be strong. The story line with the ghosts kept me very interested. The side personal story was good too. Happy to see more of Lauralee, and some good things coming her way. I like that Frankie is finally warming up to Verity and he seems to be enjoying having her as a partner. Looking forward to the next book (and their next adventure, nice tease), for sure!

Princess Fuzzypants here: It is not easy being caught between the living and the dead. Verity’s career as a paranormal PI of sorts has put her in some strange situations but this one takes the cake- or perhaps I should say the pie. Her ghostly gangster partner is being pursued by an equally ghostly cop. If Frankie and Verity are unable to help him solve a murder that has haunted him all his spectral life, he is not only going to imprison Frankie for his numerous crimes but he is going to turn Verity’s ancestoral home into a ghostly San Quentin. This is the same home that she has fought valiantly to keep despite the machinations of the woman who would have been her mother in law, and if things continue along the current course with her other son, might still become her mother in law. Verity is not about to let this happen. She will risk everything, including her life to make sure the repurposing of her home does not stick.
The murder of a corrupt judge at a lavish Society affair is at the heart of it. Who killed the judge and who is so strong they can hide the crime while forcing the participants to reenact the fateful night year after year. As Verity uncovers the story, she finds there are layers upon layers of lies, deceits and broken hearts and lives. In fact, there is a poignant tale that is at the centre of it all. Can Verity somehow connect the dead with the living and repair the hurt.
As if that was not enough, she has to contend with her former fiancé and his mother as he goes full bore into a midlife crisis. In spite of trying to have as little contact with either of them as possible, the mother blames Verity for everything that goes wrong. That is not the worst of it. It seems there is somebody who really does not like Verity. In fact, this person keeps trying to poison her with pecan pies.
As always, this is a fun read that mixes fantasy and mystery. Anyone who plays babysitter to a gangster ghost and has a pet skunk is all right in my books.
I give it five purrs and two paws up.

Thank you to the author and Net Gallery for the Advanced Reading Copy of this latest instalment in the series. Dead Guys and Pecan Pies was no disappointment. I love the mix of mystery, intrigue and ghostly goings on. I love the characters in these books. Well worth reading if you are looking for something a little different from the norm. Light hearted and easy to read but nonetheless feel real emotion throughout. Another great book in this series. Can’t wait for the next one xx

That time of the year has rolled around once again when the air gets crisp, the leaves are rustling, and it’s time for a new mystery to solve with my favorite 1920’s gangster ghost and his sweet southern gal pal.

Pecan Pies and Dead Guys is the seventh installment in a delightful paranormal cozy mystery series. Each book can be read as standalone, but there is a clear series arc that helps the reader understand the story surrounding the mystery- or mysteries as there are more than one.

In the last book, Verity and Frankie promised a ghostly police inspector that they would help him solve his last unsolved crime. He calls in the favor and they help investigate an unsolved murder that took place at an appropriately creepy, abandoned mansion outside of town. At the same time, Verity’s boyfriend Ellis is working on a present day murder and Verity is receiving mysterious pecan pies while her ex is causing her trouble once again.

I love that the amateur detecting team is a sweet lady and a jaded ghostly gangster. These two crack me up the way they go about things and get into trouble without trying real hard. Okay, so Frankie is a natural at it because he still hangs out with his old ghostly gang members and still thinks like a crook, but Verity just sort of trips over trouble. They are joined many times by Verity’s love interest, police detective, Ellis Wydell.

Speaking of Ellis, the situation Verity is still in with the Wydells is a ticklish one. Ellis’ mom hates her because of their rocky past dealings, but Verity is trying hard for Ellis’ sake. Ellis cares for his family, but he’s still considered the black sheep because he didn’t go into politics or their family law firm like the others- no, he wished to protect and serve as a small town police detective. Ellis is a sweetie and I love how he accepts what he can’t see when it comes to Verity’s ghostly adventures and supports her when he can.

Small town Sugarland, Tennessee is a wonderful setting and I love the familiar locations and the quirky characters.

The mysteries in this one were good ones. The historical ghost mystery was definitely more intriguing to me as Verity and Frankie worked a case of a murder that happened back in the ’20’s. The modern murder didn’t get as much attention, but it wasn’t that hard to figure out really. There are some good suspenseful action scenes that keep things exciting between Frankie’s wise cracks and Verity’s investigation work. For the first time, there is a mild cliffhanger that has me anxious to get my paws on the next release pronto.

All in all, Pecan Pies and Dead Guys was another solid gold installment in a favorite paranormal cozy mystery series that I can happily recommend to fans of the genre. The ghostly creepiness can get suspenseful, but is definitely within the comfort zone of paranormal light weights.
