"Painted Botanical Collage: Transforming Mixed-Media Papers into Cut Paper Blooms" by Tracey English is a small, colorful and fun to-do visual arts books. It encourages you to look at the plants around - and see how you can turn what you see into an evening project. Its sole purpose is to give you step by step instructions to build 33 collages representing single flower arrangements. The detailed tutorials are proceeded by a section on preparing the materials, most importantly the papers from which you then make the collage elements. While it feels a little bit like painting by the numbers at first, I appreciated the art when I actually tried to make one of the projects myself. And the projects shown in detail in the book are just a beginning, an inspiration to get out and find your own ideas to execute.

"Painted Botanical Collage" is beautifully illustrated, full of color and interesting shapes and forms. It is a really fun gift book for somebody who wants to do some simple, but rewarding art projects. Even if just wants to browse through.

This is a fun book to guide you through a flower painting adventure. I like doing collage with painted papers. It gives the collage so much more personality than using commercial paper. Love it!

Although the book is deceptively simple and straightforward I loved English's approach to collage and flowers. These collages are simple to put together and break down the visual anatomy of each flower in such a way that you could apply the same shapes if you wanted to try drawing or painting the flowers directly as well. This is a great book for anyone who is timidly dipping their toes into art but wants projects that feel fun the way art felt fun as a kid.

Thank you for the opportunity to read and review this book.

This book is filled with attractive, eye catching, colorful illustrations. The ideas are clever and the explanations are easy to understand and follow. The stylized flower pictures would be easy for an artist, crafter, or quilter to use. This book would be great to have in your library if you are an artist or a gardener.

This book is a whole lot of fun!
It is just full of ideas and fun things to make using paint, blending colour, collage, and using flowers as an inspiration. Great book for children and adults alike, (and both together) to experience a bit of fun and create some pretty good pictures and even learn something about plants. I love the succulents, the orchid and especially the venus fly trap.

Vivid pictures and photography give this step by step guide to collage art for beginners looking to expand their craft a vibrant educational tool.. This book is excellent for amateurs just starting out by giving them the perfect starting point to begin the fun and creative art medium of collage art. This particular guide is very specific in how to use collage art to create vibrant and beautiful botanical art. It was easy to follow and fun to use as I explored whether or not this was an art medium that I might enjoy. Not being a fabulous artist, I enjoyed the ability to create something stunning with the easy to follow instructions.

I always do love it when I learn something new!

I didn't think I'd find some new activity in watercolor that I could try out again anytime soon, considering I've devoured every watercolor book I think I can learn from in the past few months. But this is definitely new and a lot of fun!

Since I'm also into paper crafting and art journaling, this botanical collage book is a must-have to try because - added bonus - I'm a floral watercolor artist, as you can tell, it's like hitting two birds with one stone, or maybe three. I'd also like to try doing this with my 3-year-old daughter (we're in the pasting phase in art).

Creative, exciting and inspiring!

I love mixed media so the projects and skills needed in this book are right up my street.
When making collages it can sometimes be hard to find something of the colour you want, the techniques here fix that perfectly.

The book has more than thirty fun flower projects to create with collage techniques. Each project has a visual guide to make the botanical collages from start to finish. The visual guides show you have to mix colors, create background paper, and master basic collage techniques.
The “yes, yes, yes” of this book…
The final pieces are cute and colorful. They resemble the art of Eric Carle, but the collage techniques used by Tracey English are less complicated and less time-consuming than Eric Carle’s collage techniques.
The Material and tools listed in the book can be found at any local store that sells art supplies. I am glad I did not have to buy that particular high-priced paper from Japan, or those expensive European watercolors, which I know I would have used only once or twice.
The visual guide and step-by-step instruction are easy to follow and visually pleasant. The projects are simple and fun to make; they do no create anxiety in people who feel insecure about making art.
Even if this book shows you a step-by-step process for creating flower projects, it gives you the freedom to experiment with techniques, media, and collage techniques.
As a beginner, you might want to follow the step-by-step process. But, once you have mastered a few projects, you can surely add your personality and your own ideas to the remaining projects.
The book encourages you to use your creativity and your unique perspective in each project. The easy-going tone and colorful projects create a relaxed, non-judgmental, and fun atmosphere—the best atmosphere for creating art!
Even if you are not a fan of botanical collage, I would suggest you to read this book. The collage techniques in the book could be used for so many projects, beside botanical collage projects.
The “no, no, no” of this book…
I’ve tried to make a few of the projects in the book. Some projects are more complex than others. Unfortunately, the book does not show projects in descending order, from easiest to hardest.
If you are a beginner, I would suggest to start with the easiest project first. Once you have completed it, move to the next easiest project, then the next, and the next. I would suggest to start with the Craspedia project or with the Tulip project.
Do not try to make an exact copy of the projects in the book. Each artist has a truly unique way of seeing, mixing, and applying colors on paper. Also, results may vary accordingly to type of colors and type of paper used. In other words, do not try to be perfect or to create an exact copy of each project.
And, if you do not feel strong about mixing acrylic colors, I would use colored pencils. If you are a beginner not used to mix colors, to create the projects in the book You need at least an acrylic paint tube 24-piece set. The material and tools page should have included this information for beginners.
Minus a few “no, no, no” here and there, the book is successful visual guide that to shows you a wonderful and often forgotten art form.
And ... if you are in love with creating unique gifts for your friends--bookmark cards, greeting cards, or home decor--or if you are a teacher enamored with paper and glue, this is definitely the book for you!

I would never have thought to do a painted collage this way. Absolutely beautiful step-by-step guide to painting a botanical collage, this collection shows interesting techniques to creating a collage by painting each piece beforehand and then creating the flowers/plants. It outlines the different materials needed, too.

Painted Botanical Collage is an incredibly detailed tutorial on using collages to create natural looking floral artworks. If I sound surprised there, it’s because I am. This book is relatively short, being less than fifty pages, but it covers so much in that short amount of time. It’s astonishing, really.
This instructional book covers everything from the materials and tools used all the way to how the artist (Tracey English) designed and created specific flowers. My favorite part, oddly enough, was in the middle of all this. English took the time to explain and show how she would create her own background papers – papers that she would then cut up and use in her collages. It is actually a brilliant idea, and one I would never have thought of on my own.
I love Tracey English’s bright and creative style for collages. Each piece had such personality and character to them all, while still absolutely looking like the flower or plant she intended on. I couldn’t think of a better instructor to have written this book.

I really enjoyed this book. Each project is explained in a way that is easy for a beginner to understand. I also liked that this book gave me a different view of what a collage is. I am excited to try this project!
The only improvement that I would suggest would be to include templates. I'm not great at free-hand so it would be helpful to me.
Overall, I would recommend the Painted Botanical Collage.

Join in the fun as British artist Tracey English shares the methods behind the magical flower collages that charm and delight her Instagram followers.

This is a fun book to craft your way through: the instructions are clear and concise and the photographs helpful. There are so many projects in here that would work for kid’s crafts and group activities at Girl Guides/Scouts, Brownies, and Scouts as they would find their botanical materials and then make them into something. (Much like we collected maple leaves and either ironed them in wax paper or preserved in books.
A great book for any crafter or mom’s library!
