An emotional book with relatable characters. I did find though that this book was somewhat predictable and this spoilt the reading for me. Due to the predictability of the story I found I'd leave the book a few days and then pick it up again, eye rolling at times. Having 3 teen daughters, I could relate to many parts of the story. I found the writing from Abi's point of view truly believable and liked that it was told from both Abi and Olivia's point of views. |
Unfortunately, I have not been able to read and review this book. After losing and replacing my broken Kindle and getting a new phone I was unable to download the title again for review as it was no longer available on Netgalley. I’m really sorry about this and hope that it won’t affect you allowing me to read and review your titles in the future. Thank you so much for giving me this opportunity. Natalie. |
Unfortunately, I just couldn't get I to the story. I think I was expecting something more. I don't know of I'll read another by this author. |

I really enjoyed this book and felt desperately sorry for Abi's situation. I was a little disappointed with the ending as I could see it coming and wasn't surprised by it, although that didn't detract from my enjoyment of the book. I'll definitely look out for more from the author in the future! |
This is a heartbreaking read, and I can’t believe I was the only one who cried while reading it. However it’s also a thriller and family saga all very cleverly woven together. Different timelines and points of view help with telling so you never know ( or at least I didn’t) who done it and why. I stayed up late as it was also unputdownable. Highly recommend. |
This is another book that I’m mortified to realise I haven’t reviewed yet, especially when I loved the novel so much. This is an incredible novel that is a great thriller but more than that it’s a brilliant exploration of the relationship between mothers and daughters. Abi is a single mum to Olivia, and one morning she’s woken to a phone call telling her that her daughter has been in an accident and is badly hurt. It turns out that Olivia had secrets from her mum and Abi is devastated that her daughter hadn’t felt she could confide in her. We also get Olivia’s story and gradually build up to the night she fell, and what actually happened to her. This is another book that I just didn’t want to put down, it is a real page turner and I wanted to know how things were going to turn out. More than that I felt so emotionally invested in Abi and Olivia’s stories. It really reminded me of being a teenager and even though I was incredibly close to my mum there is always going to be a point when a teen begins to pull away and wants to keep some things private. This is a book that is really staying with me, and I can’t wait to read more by the author. |
This is a book that Alice Feeney fans might enjoy. An easy to read, good thriller with some surprise reveals! I didn't fell in love with the characters, but it's a good page turner. |

With thanks to Netgalley and the publishers for the ARC, which I have enjoyed reading. The Night Olivia Fell by Christina McDonald is a very moving story about a young woman who is in high school and finds out she is pregnant and who decides she will keep her baby. It is the night of the yearly barbecue when school finishes for the summer that Olivia decides she will tell the father of her unborn child she is pregnant and then tell her mother. Her mother was a single mother who raised Olivia on her own. The storyline is very clever and tells the story of what happens that night and Abi’s fight to find out what happens to her daughter and how she fell and why. Highly recommended. |

A thriller, full of suspense. I enjoyed reading from the alternate perspectives of mother and daughter |
The Night Olivia fell was a solid suspense novel. It was also an emotive book and it really engaged me from the beginning, I couldn’t put it down. I look forward to reading more by this author. |
The Night Olivia Fell by Christina McDonald is a thriller with an emotional heart that drew me in from the first chapter and never let go. Abi Knight’s world crumbles when her teenage daughter, Olivia is pronounced brain dead following a tragic accident. However, Olivia is pregnant and kept on life support until the baby is born. Abi is determined to get to the truth and as a reader I was rooting for her every step of the way. Olivia’s story, which is related in flashback, beautifully recreates the fierce loyalties and petty quarrels experienced by those of the cusp of adulthood. An exploration of how a mother can hold her daughter too tight and what it means to be free… |
With thanks to Netgalley and HQ for this ARC in exchange for an open and honest review. The Night Olivia Fell is Christina McDonald's debut book. I had already spotted this book on my recommendations and had a copy on pre-order. Abi was a single mum to seventeen year old Olivia. One morning, Abi was woken to a call from the hospital to say Olivia had been involved in an accident. When she got their the doctors explained Olivia had drowned and was clinically dead. The doctor explained they could not switch off Olivia`s life support because she was three months pregnant. They intended to keep Olivia on a ventilator until the baby was safe enough to be delivered. Abi was shocked that Olivia had not confided in her and confronted her boyfriend Tyler. Tyler explained that he and Olivia had split up before the summer holidays, if Olivia was pregnant he was not the father. Then Abi received a tip off that the local police had been ordered not to look into Olivia`s death. Determined to found out the truth for Olivia and her unborn child she decided to investigate. This was a beautiful story about the relationship between mothers and daughters. The book was told from the POV of Abi and Olivia and the months leading to her accident. Abi`s mother had committed suicide when she was young. I understood why Abi emotionally smothered Olivia to prove she would never leave her. I also liked Olivia and understood why she thought Abi had lied to her. However she was teenager and probably didn't understand the repercussions of tracing her father. The final scenes when the baby was born and Olivia died left me in bits. I recommend this book thought provoking book. |
I've not read Big Little Lies, so the comparisons didn't really mean much to me. I have to say, though, that if Big Little Lies is similar to The Night Olivia Fell, then I don't really understand the hype.Don't get me wrong, this isn't a bad book at all. In fact, I quite enjoyed it. But the marketing plan is questionable and it doesn't live up to that kind of hype I really liked the way that McDonald handled Olivia's condition all the way to the end. We knew from the start that Olivia was completely brain dead and there was no coming back from that, and McDonald didn't pull any miracles or deus ex machina to bring her back. We as the reader had to accept the loss along with the characters, particularly Olivia's mother. It was incredibly well done. I got really attached to Olivia, who was a very well rounded character considering we only knew her through flashbacks. McDonald did this part really well. I also liked Olivia a lot more because I got really into the mother/daughter relationship. There were a couple of things that I wasn't expecting from the book, the first being that it was more of a mystery than a thriller. I was invested in the mystery of what happened to Olivia, but nothing about it was particularly thrilling or horror-worthy. The second thing is that the book felt more YA than adult, which I didn't have a problem with at all, but it was surprising. I think some readers will be disappointed because this book is being marketed as an adult thriller. The Night Olivia Fell isn't the most noteworthy mystery book out there, but it was enjoyable and the story flowed really well. I was invested enough to continue reading until the end, and I was impressed with how well McDonald handled relationships and characterisation. |

Abi Knight is startled awake in the middle of the night to a ringing phone and devastating news , her teenage daughter, Olivia, has been in a terrible accident. Abi is told that Olivia slipped and fell from a bridge into the icy water below, and now she lies silent, dependent on life support. But then Abi learns that her sensible daughter is in fact three months pregnant . Abi believes from the start that Olivia’s fall is no accident. She sees bruises on her wrists, and she quickly learns no one is taking her seriously, including the police. Once the police finally do begin to investigate, the case never seems to be their priority, and Abi decides to take matters into her own hands. The Night Olivia Fell: 'Addictive, twisty and beautifully written, an emotional roller coaster of a thriller that kept me guessing until the very end. Many thanks to NetGalley and HQ General Fiction for a copy in return for a fair and honest review |
When Abi Knight went to bed, she never imagined getting up in the middle of the night to a phone call telling her that her daughter has been injured. Fretting the worse, she zips over to the hospital. All the while, she prays that her daughter will come out of whatever has happened to her soon enough. To her dismay, the news is grim. Olivia will never recover from her ordeal. To make matters worse, her daughter is also pregnant. Discovering what happened to Olivia will take quite a bit of doing. Nevertheless, Abi will do whatever is necessary to ensure her daughter receives the justice she so deserves. The Night Olivia Fell is the first book I've read penned by the lovely Christina McDonald. This book is certainly an awesome read. Once I sat down to read it, I devoured the book in the span of three hours. I kid you not. That's how good the author is in keeping the reader's attention at all times. From the moment I dove into the book, I found myself wanting to know more about Olivia and Abi. Abi is the type of mother who needs to control every aspect of her child's life. She's strict to the point that Olivia found herself looking for ways to gain her freedom without her mother knowing. I can totally relate to her doing so, since my own mom was a little strict when I was growing up. Christina is an author to keep an eye on. Her style of storytelling is immersive. It pulls you in from the get-go. Looking forward to what she has in store for her readers in the near future. |
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 5/5 stars for The Night Olivia Fell by Christina McDonald!! . . I would say this is more of a mystery. It’s a single working Mother trying to put the pieces together to find out what exactly happened to her daughter, Olivia. It’s a fast paced discovery into the past and present over a course of a few months leading up to the shocking discovery of Olivia being in a coma. ⭐️I think what sets a good book apart from a great book, is when I can identify with a character and see how realistic it could actually be. As a Mom, I put myself in Abi Knight’s shoes and I would be trying just as hard to solve this mystery. Another great book for 2019!! Thank you #netgalley @gallerybooks and the #netreduction |
I started reading The Night Olivia Fell with high expectations. I’d read some fantastic reviews and the plot sounded right up my street. For anyone who follows my reviews, you may notice I’m a very emotional reader – I like a book that’s going to make me grin like a Cheshire cat or cry big fat ugly tears. This book seemed like it was made for me. So maybe it was those high expectations that got in the way when I first started reading this book. It took me a while to get into, feeling a bit slow paced and not altogether gripping me. I think the main issue was that I just didn’t gel with main character, Abi, whose daughter Olivia is on life support waiting to give birth. She’s prickly, aggressive, and in the flashbacks to life before the accident, controlling and oppressive towards teen Olivia. However, as I read on I started to relate to her. Abi and I have a lot in common, and as a single parent I remember that feeling of wanting to prove your child can have every opportunity a child with two parents can have. As we learn more of her backstory, I could empathise and understand her, and her overwhelming fear of loosing those she loves. And I really enjoyed watching her character develop, as she overcame her demons of both past and present. The mystery of what happened to Olivia is tightly woven and while there’s clear suspects marked out, it really could have been any of them right up until the reveal. This is a complex mystery, wrapped up in secrets and lies, some designed to protect and others to destroy. At it’s heart is a young girl, Olivia, who tragically seems to be manipulated from all sides, yet remains a thoughtful, caring and optimistic young woman. Whereas I initially found Abi difficult, I loved hearing Olivia’s story in the flashback chapters leading up to that fateful night. The final third of this book was excellent. I read it with held breath, tears streaming down my face so heavily I couldn’t see the page. All the emotion I missed at the begin is there in those final heartbreaking pages with some incredibly tender and moving writing searing my heart. I was glad I’d stuck with this book, it was well worth it in the end and I think this is a story that will stay with me for quite sometime, as well as serving as a reminder to appreciate my own teen daughter. This is a story that will slowly creep under your skin and rip your heart out before putting it back together again. |
What a fantastic premise for a novel, and one I haven’t come across before. The Night Olivia Fell has an emotionally-driven plot, and is a must read for fans of psychological dramas. Right from the get-go, this novel hooks you, Abi hears the words no mother wants to hear, and from them on, you’re locked into this story. It taps into every mother’s fear, and Abi’s need to know the truth about what happened to Olivia becomes your need too! Her love for her child, her motherly instinct, drives this novel forward. And if that wasn’t emotive enough, Olivia is pregnant, and when Abi meets her grandchild, it will also be the final goodbye to her daughter – cue the heartbreak, cos damn, that really got to me on an emotional level. This novel is very much a character-driven one, and the relationships between the characters were excellently displayed. Particularly the relationship between mother and daughter, hearing both Abi and Olivia speak about how close they were, their bond, was heartwarming. In contrast, was the hurt and anger at secrets keep and lies told, the actions that can put a strain on this bond – for every action, there is a reaction; and for every lie, there is a consequence. Abi’s narration is in the present day, but we also get Olivia’s perspective detailing the events in the run up to her fall. These chapters were great at building suspense, each time you learned a bit more about what Olivia was up to, you saw that someone could potentially have motive, and that strengthened your belief that this wasn’t an accident. Also, McDonald got the ‘voice’ of a seventeen-year-old spot on, Olivia wasn’t wise beyond her years, nor did she come across as much younger than she was meant to be, and that was important in creating ‘the belief’ in this storyline. There was ample ‘bitchiness’, friendships, and cliques, just liked you’d expect – borderline cliché, but hey, that’s the life of some seventeen-year-olds! This is one of those novels that I liked instantly, I was engaged, and invested. You may see it pegged as a psychological thriller, and it is in the sense that any book that captivates your mind has to psychologically thrilling; but this book is more at home in the psychological drama category, highly emotive in nature, with the right amount of suspense. Great characters, a unique plot, excellently executed! I absolutely recommend this one, and I look forward to reading more from McDonald. |
This book kept me up late into the night. I couldn't stop reading it. The book is written in the perspective of both Olivia and her mother, Abi. It keeps you questioning the mystery of what happened to Olivia, but is also about so much more than that. The author brilliantly captures both a Mother's striving to protect her teen child, and the teen's constant struggle to both please their parents while still being independent. I recommend this book to everyone, it's a quick read and keeps you on edge throughout. Thanks for the review copy Netgalley and HQ |

A very well written book which I loved from start to finish. The characters are so believable and you really want to find out what happened to Olivia the night she fell, as well as what led to the fall. There were twists and turns and plenty of suspense. I would highly recommend this book. |
