This book was unfortunately a massive disappointment! The Furies felt like it could have been Means Girls if it were set in a private school in England, and the plastics were into the occult. A premise which should have sounded awesome but fell flat in its delivery. The only good thing about this book was the blurb.

I didn’t love this book, was expecting another one of us is lying but it just didn’t keep me interested. Found it pretty long winded and a bit boring. Good concept with the witch craft angle but just didn’t do it for me.

I received a free ebook version of this book from Netgalley. Thankyou to both the publisher and Netgalley for allowing me to read this! My review is still honest.

I have some mixed feelings about this one. This author clearly has a lot of potential, and there were things I really liked, but it's not a perfect book by any means.
The Furies follows Violet, who has recently started at a private girls school. She becomes involved with a secret society in the school, and a group of girls who are wildly different from anyone Violet has ever known. Right from the beginning, we know that a murder takes place, with the book showing the events leading up to it.
The one thing that really strikes me is how beautiful the writing is. It shows a good amount of skill to create prose that is so enchanting-I consumed every word, and I loved reading from this perspective. The prologue was also one of the best I've read! What an enticing concept, one where you just have to find out what happens next. I liked Violet and how she was quite morally grey, and honest about it. She never justified her actions in a false way and I liked that. I liked the group and the story behind the society, and I enjoyed the ending and how we weren't left unsatisfied.
I think this book is weak in it's supporting characters. Violet and Robin were both larger than life, fully fleshed out, but the others didn't really have much going for them. The other girls were defined by singular characteristics, we never really found out anything at all about Emily. This was the case with a lot of plot points, actually-it just felt like it needed a little bit more. More exploration, more of a theme, more inclusive. I did find it difficult to get into at first-it's a slow paced book, which isn't always bad, and I did find that I did really get going with it about halfway.
On the whole, one I enjoyed and an author I'll be watching. It just perhaps needed another 100 pages or so to flesh out certain bits and certain characters.

I enjoyed this book from the first chapter! It’s a supernatural novel with a twist, completely different to what I’d usually read. The four girls intrigued me from the start; even though I found certain parts uncomfortable, it was still captivating, plus I was satisfied with the ending. If you like witchy-teen thrillers, you’ll love this one. I’d certainly recommend it, it’ll definitely stay with me.

The furies is simply put a story about teenage bonds, overcoming grief, angst, and the longing to be part of a pack/clique ... and oh with a touch of witchcraft.

It is really interesting how the story is laid out. Violet joins a new private school after being homeschooled for a year to deal with her grief and survivors guilt of surging a car crash that killed half her family. She meets Robin and these new group of girls who are “different” but welcome her in and she is desperate to be a part of the group. This desperation in part is what leads her down a very dark and dangerous path, and leads to all sorts of things happening.

What I really enjoyed about this is you are never quite sure if something truly mythical is happening or not, or who has the real power. The characters are well developed and engaging whether you like them or not. I couldn’t decide whether I liked Violet and/or Robin or any of the other girls to be fair, but I was still really invested in their story. The things that happen to them/as a result of their actions would seem almost fantastical but you are carried along with the story and it all seems to make sense and be logical. Definitely took me back to the mindset of being a teenager and how everything is completely overdramatized.

Very enjoyable read - highly recommended.

2.5 stars

In 1998, Violet attended Elm Hollow Academy after the deaths of her father and sister in a car accident that she walked away from without a scratch.
The private girls' school has a history linked to the witch trials, and Violet finds herself drawn to three girls and a teacher who leads their study group about the dark history of the school, art, feminism and literature.
When a girl that went missing, who was part of the group, is found dead on the campus, Violet wonders if there is more to the study group than there seems, and whether one of her new friends could have killed her.
Is magic real?
Can Violet trust her friends and herself?

The blurb for The Furies really intrigued me - I liked the idea of a study group/society at a school as well as a body being found and the possibility of magic - but in the end, this wasn't for me.
I didn't really like any of the characters, apart from maybe Grace who I felt sorry for. Violet was okay but she didn't really seem to have much personality - at times it felt like she was just trying to be Robin.
I didn't like how toxic some of the relationships were, but it was interesting to see the dark side of friendships and what people can be capable of doing.
The plot was okay but took me a while to get into. I did lose interest towards the end.
The writing style wasn't one of my favourites and I struggled with it to begin with.
I am disappointed that I didn't enjoy this more.

Overall, this was an okay read.

The Furies is an excellent coming of age book. The main character, Violet, is probably someone everyone can recognise. Quiet, nervous, feels like she stand out like a sore thumb, and is ultimately taken advantage of by stronger personalities.

However, for all the lovely things about this book (the writing, the historical basis, the creepiness), I found it so hard going. It took me four or five times to pick this book up before I got far enough to want to continue.

I wouldn't buy it for a friend, but I'd definitely let them borrow my copy if I had one available.

Highly enjoyable and captivating, Katie Lowe can seriously write! THE FURIES is unlike anything I've ever read and I'll make sure to tell all my friends and family about this book.

This was a very dark and absorbing exploration of the dangers of cliques and toxic female friendships. It was beautifully written and atmospheric, and I could vividly picture the characters and setting, particularly Elmwood. I struggled a bit with some scenes and believe I should warn other readers that this contains a rape scene. It’s also kind of blurred as to whether there really is supernatural intervention or not, but I liked that it wasn’t totally clear. I was a little disappointed in the twist ending and shocked at the lengths some of the characters go to, even though I feel like that’s the point the book was trying to make. It felt overly grotesque at times. Overall, I did really enjoy the book and find it really intriguing. I’d almost want a sequel to complete the cycle and catch up with where the main characters are now. (Plus I would love to know if Alex and Grace are still together?) 4 stars.

Set in a quirky school with a dark past this read would be brilliant for YA fans of Practical Magic.
Although I am a fan of witchy reads I found this book to be a tad too young for me. Although I can vaguely remember what it is like to be a wreck-less teen it is a tad to long ago for me to relate.
This is a slower paced some what unsettling read. With a steady plot and a disturbing undercurrent.
As mentioned it would be a brilliant res for fans of Practical Magic, The Wicked Deep and The Undead Girl Gang.

Donna Tartt’s ‘The Secret History’ meets Megan Abbott in an exploration of girls gone bad and toxicity in female friendships. While I understand the praise for this book, to me it fell a little flat as main character Violet is flimsy and did little to hold my attention. I also feel there was very little depth put into motives and consequences of the events in the novel, which made it all feel lacklustre and ingenuine.

I LOVED this, it's gripping, dark and delicious. I love books like this based in a chilling, school location.

It had me up reading into the middle of the night because I was too scared to put it down...but loved it.

The Furies is without a doubt, one of my favourite books of 2019. This story is dark, full of rage and absolutely engrossing. I completely fell under the spell of this book, and I never wanted it to end. The story follows Violet, a young girl sent to private school after the death of her father and sister in a car accident. Desperate to find any form of friendship she falls in with a group of girls named Robin, Alex and Grace. Violet joins their secret study group with a member of the faculty, learning all about ancient rites and the school’s history as site of witch burnings. The girls believe they can harness the magic, take revenge on those who have wronged them, but with so many secrets who do you believe, and more importantly who can you trust?

This books has echoes of The Craft and I loved the blending of mystery/thriller with just a hint of the supernatural. I adored Katie’s writing style, it kept sucking me in deeper and deeper until I was racing through the last few chapters of the book, desperate to know how it was going to end. I often find with mysteries that I guess the ending quick early on, but every twist in this book completely surprised me. I also really liked the setting too, a remote coastal town in England. It felt like the perfect dark and grey setting for this eerie and haunting tale.

I also adored the explorations of female friendships in this story, particularly highlighting toxic friendships. It was fascinating to see the relationships develop between the group, and particularly how they evolved as tensions ran higher. The Furies is an insightful and entertaining story, and one I definitely still think about even though I finished it a while ago.

The Furies is an engrossing tale of witchcraft, murder and friendship. If you’re looking for a fast paced tale that will keep you reading well past midnight, you absolutely have to pick this one up. I loved every second of this book and I’m dying to read more from Katie Lowe.

The Furies is a gripping, intense and disturbing insight into the power and vulnerability of teenage girls, the lure of witchcraft and the
all-consuming infatuation and savagery of female friendship. Even with flavours of Margaret Atwood’s Cat’s Eye and Donna Tartt, the novel has a lyrical style and dark energy all its own. A great read.

This was a slow burner for me. I found it difficult to get into. The characters I couldn't invest in as I couldn't relate to them. Teenage fury and angst, not my cup of tea.

A fantastic mix of mystery, lore and teenage angst and (you guessed it) fury. A fab read! A quick and gripping read, this book will have you hooked!

At this rate I am going to have to start describing myself as a YA reader! I thought this book was fabulous, very well written and gripping.

The story is told by Violet, who is looking back on the events that happened to her and her friends. After a tragic accident which leaves her and her mother alone, she is sent to a girls’ school which was the site of witch trials. Violet attracts the attention of Annabel, one of the teachers, who has set up an exclusive club for girls she considers exceptional. Along with her three friends they attend to discuss women through history and through their lessons they become interested in witchcraft themselves. Robin in particular is drawn to performing rituals and they start to believe they have real power.

I thought the witchcraft elements were really well handled and I loved the way the author incorporated elements of mythology into the story. The perils of being a teenager in the 1990s are brilliantly and very accurately described, as is the friendship between the girls. I loved the way that the mystery of the missing girl unfolded and I thought that the plot was quite unexpected. Violet is a great narrator, looking back at her teenage years with some regret. Some of the book gets a bit far fetched at times, but overall, I really enjoyed it.

The Furies has everything that I love in a book; close female friendships, a Secret History-esque vibe and a sense of pervading menace. I really enjoyed this book with its strong feminist message and found it a striking and strong read. Fully immersive, well-plotted and gripping, this was a great read.

I was riveted by the relationship beteeen the four girls, especially the two main characters. The characters were well drawn and believable. It was painful to watch the MC develop and change as she was in thrall to her new best friend. The tennage angst was palpable! However, I found the whole premise of the story a tad far fetched and could not buy into it. A satsifying read, nonetheless.
