I read this book with my 8 year old who enjoyed it as much as I did. My personal favorite was "be a hug ambassador" and he is now ready to cover pine cones with bird seeds for the birds. We want to make sure our children are kind people above all else and this book was right up our alley. The ideas are simple and easy to do. I love a good list and to have a list of ideas to reference is always nice for this mom brain of mine. Be Kind is a simple yet important reminder that we can be kind in many ways in many places. Thank you NetGalley for his e-ARC. |
This is such a cute book! And as an educator, I think that there are many ways in which we can use this book in the classroom, as some of our projects focus on giving back and being kind to one another. |
This delightful book is a keeper. I suggest one in every home, classroom and library (whether public or school ). What the world needs now is a fresh sprinkling of magic dust to make kindness reign! Each page is bright, vibrant and kid-friendly with simple text that encourage kids (and adults) to be ambassadors of KINDNESS! 125 suggestions are there at your fingertips to start implementing... acts of selflessness, engagement and reaching out to others to make their day better and happier. Some are easy like smiling at someone, complimenting them, saying good morning first, and others take more effort such as sticking up for someone who is being bullied, eating with the new kid at the lunchroom table, planting bird-friendly plants like sunflowers, hosting a movie night complete with popcorn for your friends, reading to someone who hasn't learned how to yet and offering to help classmates if they are struggling with math or other subjects, just to name a few. If everyone chooses kindness, and it is a choice, the world will be a much happier place for us all. "If you can be anything, be kind." |
This is a lovely book that prompts children to do kind things. It teaches them the importance of being selfless and helping others. The illustrations are bright and simple (though a little warped in places) and accompany the text well. The great thing about this book is that children could open it at any page and do that thoughtful act of kindness that day. There are some lovely suggestions, particularly with helping the elderly and those less fortunate than ourselves. It is a very important trait to instill in children at a young age and will hopefully encourage them to be kind in the future without needing to be prompted. |

Be Kind is a list of very doable kind acts most children can perform. From the very simple tasks a child can do on her own, like asking how someone’s day was, to community projects requiring the aid of an adult, such as putting in a show at a senior center, this book has ideas for everyone. As both a mother and teacher, I see many uses for this book. Not only does it give concrete ways to show kindness, it is a fantastic starting point for kids to brainstorm other ways they can help at home and in their communities. |
Yes there really are 125 kind things to say and do in this book and if everyone did them the world would automatically be a better place. Despite the fact that people say "kindness costs you nothing" or words to that effect, it actually does cost. If it didn't, everyone would be doing it. It takes an effort. It takes thought. It takes time. Sometimes it costs money or personal possessions. But the thing is that it rewards, too, and it has a 'knock-on' effect, so it not only gives a return, it adds interest. This book has the advantage of offering scores of ideas that really don't take much effort, or much thought. They don't cost money. They really don't eat up too much time. They're easy to think of, to remember, and to do, and it was not only fun to read them, it will be fun to do them. I commend this positive book. |
Such a cute book! I loved the different ways to spread kindness and love. I think it’s an important message for children to learn. The illustrations were adorable as well. An absolute gem. |
This sweet book is full of tips for simple acts of kindness and inclusivity, plus crafts and other activities. Great for elementary age students! |
This book was received as an ARC from Storey Publishing in exchange for an honest review. Opinions and thoughts expressed in this review are completely my own. From the cover page to the last page I loved this book and the message that came across. Some of the ways of kindness described in this book were new and different such as making a "no sew" pillow and a sock toy for your dog and cat. Also, I love the relevancy of kindness by incorporating social media safety into this book and talks about the ways on how to react properly from photos shared on your Facebook, Instagram and Twitter page. EVERYONE should own this book no matter the age no matter the grade level. We will definitely consider adding this book into our JPICBK collection at the library. That is why we give this book 5 stars. |
This children’s book with ideas for acts of kindness is a little gem. The illustrations are beautiful, the suggestions simple but effective, and the presentation is very accessible for young children. A heart-warming book! |

What a lovely book for children. These days we often struggle to be kind to each other and this is a super starting point as a way of talking to children about random acts of kindness. As a teacher I would definitely have a copy of this in my classroom. You can read it to the children and then have it on the library shelf for them to dip in and out of. I love it! |
Be Kind is a new release from author Naomi Shulman that provides young people with ideas on ways to show kindness to their peers, community, and nature. Acts of kindness range from listing ways kids can be inclusive to all individuals in their personal relationships to picking up trash in their neighborhood. There is no shortage of ideas that children can learn how to incorporate into their daily life to make the world a kinder place one act at a time. |
Wow! I was pleasantly surprised by this book! I thought surely in a post modernist world, a book on being “kind” would be political, but to my surprise it wasn’t. It’s actually full of—-dare I say—FUN, practical, and “easy“ things to say and do! I wanted to read this before purchasing for my kids, but as an adult I was encouraged to “be kind” as well! The illustrations are beautiful and it even includes a few recipes (bubbles being one)! A possible antidote to screen addiction that encourages real life social interactions! Mandatory resource for every parent, educator, caregiver, human that desires to make this world a better place for others and themselves. |
A cute book with simple illustrations. Some of the ideas were a bit advanced for a young child. The overarching message of kindness is great for children to learn at a young age. Thanks Netgalley for the preview! |
This is a wonderful book. It is written for children, but I think people of all ages would benefit from reading it in this age of contention. It is full of simple and practical ways to spread kindness in the world. The illustrations are bold, colorful, and fun. I will definitely purchase a copy for my kids. |
A cute little book with some great ideas. My son loved looking through it. Would have been better as a physical copy as no Colours on kindle and the pages all over the place. A shame but book itself was a good read with nice ideas! My son really enjoyed it and was curious on how he could implement some of the strategies and what he would try! |

This book is adorable! I truly appreciated its sentiments as well as the examples of kindness to be spread around the world. I especially appreciated it because I am a teacher in the public school system so it is a book I can read and share with my students. The author not only gives examples of acts of kindness, but also describes how to make the items. For example, how to make a pillow or bubbles. This is the type of book I think my students would enjoy going to for ideas of fun activities they can do at home or at school. This is a book I would love to purchase for my classroom and share with my students. It makes me want to be a better person and I am sure it will do the same for my students. |
“There are as many ways to be kind as there are actions. Every act you do can be done kindly. You can complete a chore without waiting to be asked. Or you can lighten up a tense moment with a joke…but don’t limit yourself to these. One of the great things about being kind is that it inspires more kindness. Go ahead and make kindness a habit: It’s one you won’t want to break!” DISCLAIMER: The book is given by NetGalley, the author and the publisher in exchange of an honest review. All the review written is not related to any personal issues or connection. TRIGGER: This is a sweet graphic children book. The story is beautifully told in wonderful illustration. As this is an Advance Reader Copy, the text and art are not finalised yet! Full review: https://literatureisliving.wordpress.com/2019/03/27/be-kind-by-naomi-shulman/ |
Oh my gosh, what a sweet book! My son is too young to understand it but loved looking at the vibrant illustrations, and the book gave SO many ideas on easy ways to spread love and kindness. We will absolutely be implementing them as he grows. This would be a very good book to give as a gift to children or their parents. |
This is the cutest book ever! I truly loved reading it, and I read it as soon as I could! The pictures accompanying the different acts of kindness makes this a great book for kids. It shows how the smallest acts of kindness are within anyone's reach and how they can be modified to better fit your situation. This will be a great book for any kid and will be a joy for any parent, older sibling or anyone to read to their children! I loved it. |
