Another great read from Jane Corry. If you enjoyed her other books, you certainly won't be disappointed with this one. Recommended reading.

A great read which deals with a number of issues in a careful and yet thrilling way. Nicely paced, highly recommended.

I enjoyed this book to a certain extent, but I do wish authors would stop trying to be cler and changing either the date, or in this ase, the person all the time. At one point I looked back to the title to see if that would help me to make sense of it. I did find it rather confusing to be honest.
It was well written apart from that and I did find it very interesting.
However, when I looked back to see what this author had also written I found the title of another book that I had not enjoyed, so perhaps this author is not for me. Sorry.

With thanks to Netgalley and the publishers for the ARC, which I have thoroughly enjoyed reading.
I looked away by Jane Corry is a very complex book , with a storyline which also needs careful consideration when reading. The author touches upon many social issues which are discussed with sympathy such as; homelessness, poverty, mental health issues and the treatment and changes in mental health.
As a story it is extremely interesting and discusses so many topics, such as abusive behaviour, cohesive behaviour and life, death, marriage and many issues in between.
Highly recommended.

I enjoyed this story but it took me longer than expected. It was a devastating novel about loss and forgiveness and it was really interesting to find a character in the book that was homeless. I don't think I've ever read a story in which a homeless person is one of the main characters so it offered something new and different. The story was a bit slow for my liking but I think the way the pace is actually intentional. I will definitely keep an eye out and see what other novels are published by the author in the future.

Ellie has a secret in her life. She has made another life and is married with a daughter and a little grandson who she adores. Her husband is a bully who has had several affairs during their marriage. One day whilst they are looking after the grandson she notices her husband on the phone to his latest woman and their grandson disappears.
What happens now? Her worlds collide with devastating consequences
This will keep you guessing to the very last page and will move you to tears at times.

Every parents nightmare. As I knew from the book title what was coming I was dreading reading it whilst I knew it was coming. Tells mental illness quite well too.

What a fabulous book this is. Having never read anything by Jane Corry before I was nevertheless intrigued by the description and set out with no expectations. I became totally engrossed very quickly by this story which covered the subjects of homelessness, mental health issues and the terrible treatment that was meted out to patients in earlier years. What an eye opener. I learned much from this book - not only about mental illness but also the plight of the homeless and how easily one can fall into such a sad situation. Told in two parts - Ellie and Jo - I had my suspicions about the connection between the two characters but the final twist came right out of the blue. This suspenseful novel was very cleverly written and I wonder how I have missed Jane's books until now. I will most definitely be seeking out other books by her in the future. My thanks to Netgalley and Penguin UK for allowing me the opportunity to read and review this book.

Brilliant. I really enjoyed this book. There is a lot to the story. It took me a while to work out what was happening. Everything is really well written and comes together in a surprising way. I would definitely recommend this book.

Thank you to Netgalley for my copy.

I found this an enjoyable read and I was intrigued to know how Jo tied into the story. It gave a good insight into homelessness and mental ill health and I didn’t see the twist coming at the end.

I found this book a little slow and confusing to begin with - and it was only as I got towards the end that I realised that was kind of the point of it! It was really well written and absorbing and I very much enjoyed it once I got into it. Recommended.

Wow. What an incredible read! It really was page turning in a rush to find out what would happen to each character and how they would all find their way back to each other. A brilliant book that I can easily see being turned into a film

Wow - what a fantastic, sad, tragic and thoroughly engaging read - I could not wait to pick it up each time. Wonderful, sympathetic characters and a background of tragedy and trauma. Written with clearly careful research and insight. Cannot recommend highly enough.

5 Stars from me

Jane Corry has deftly captured the devastation that a childhood trauma can have upon a whole life in I Looked Away. Some people in this world just don't have much luck and poor old Ellie is certainly one of them! The book follows Ellie from a young girl in a 'normal' family all the way through to her becoming and grandmother and along the way she endures some pretty awful events. Most people would be unlikely to go through one of the things Ellie has to cope with and yet this poor lady attracts trouble like a magnet. Unfortunately, so very close to the truth as early childhood trauma often has a lifelong impact.

There are several converging threads throughout the book and I read the 'young Ellie' thread pretty much wanting to put the book down and walk away as it was somewhat evident where it was heading and I just wanted to avoid it!

The homelessness elements of the book I thought were also brilliantly portrayed - whether people realise it or not most of us are only ever a few steps away from homelessness, it can happen in such a variety of ways and yet as a society we simply do not do enough to help those in need.

Overall a sad but fabulous 'wicked stepmother' tale with a twist - I loved it!

Synopsis: Every Monday, 49-year-old Ellie looks after her grandson Josh. She loves him more than anything else in the world. The only thing that can mar her happiness is her husband's affair. But he swore it was over, and Ellie has decided to be thankful for what she's got.

Then one day, while she's looking after Josh, her husband gets a call from that woman. And for just a moment, Ellie takes her eyes off her grandson. The accident that happens will change her life forever.

Because Ellie is hiding something in her past.

And what looks like an accident could start to look like murder...

A strong storyline which covers links between trauma , mental health , homelessness and more . What connects Jo a homeless woman , selling The Big Issue , and Ellie a middle class mother ? It turns out Ellie underwent a trauma as a teenager which has affected her all her life since . She ends up in a marriage to a manipulative , unfaithful man , drawn to her for her Trust Fund money and lack of confidence . The well written story unfolds around all these points and interlinks them to a totally unexpected finale.

People have been recommending Jane Corry to me forever....this was actually the first book I have read from her! I liked the characters, Ellie and her family seemed fairly normal and easily relatable in most ways. The storyline was split into two....told by both Ellie and Jo and the outcome was a bit of a surprise...wasn't expecting that?! It was an easy read and I was excited to see what happened. I wouldn't say it was a typical thriller but it had elements, it felt like a chick lit combined with thriller....is that just me? I enjoyed it and will definitely be reading the other books by Jane Corry 😊

Struggled to get into this book, not due to any fault of the author, just that thrillers are not my usual read. However, I did manage to finish it, it's full of twists & turns & a page turner, keeping you intrigued all the way to it's conclusion
