This was such an original book and due to that, it was right up my street. It's a unique read which uses a poetic format and structure to tell the profoundly moving story of Allison and Marla whose paths cross inexplicably and they grow to become close despite the substantial age gap between them. Two different generations finding comfort in one another was heart-warming and as the story highlights issues both generations go experience it was topical, thought-provoking and intensely compelling. I simply can't wait to read the entirety of it.

The award-winning and critically acclaimed Ms Crossan is a masterfully storyteller and this verse novel has all the hallmarks of a tour de force. You can tell exactly how talented she is even from this short excerpt. An emotional, visceral and all-powerful tale that explores issues of mental health, illness, the fallibility of memory, the importance of support, friendship, comfort and the family ties that bind us all. Superb. Many thanks to Bloomsbury Publishing for an ARC.

A beautiful and heartbreaking extract from what promises to be another powerful book from Sarah Crossan, Toffee is the story of a young runaway who finds herself hiding out it the home of an elderly woman with dementia who mistakes her for an old friend. From the short extract I can see the beautiful use of language I have come to expect from this author, and the beginnings of an intriguing story and relationship. I look forward to reading more when the book is released.

"I like the idea of being
sweet and hard,
A girl with a name for people to chew on."

This is a really wonderful extract and I can't wait to have an opportunity to read the book in its entirety.

Toffee is a girl trying to run away from her past when she comes across a woman who can't remember her own. Toffee might look sweet, but this this tale has enough bitterness and spice to keep things interesting.

Told in a poetic, beautiful and entirely captivating way, the plot moves swiftly along. I'm hooked!

Many thanks to NetGalley, Bloomsbury Publishing and Sarah Crossan for a copy of this extract.

Wow, what a start. So keen to read the rest of the book. Will definitely buy it for my students. I’ll buy anything by Sarah Crossan and I have a boys school library, she is always a hit. Can’t wait to read the whole book.

Oh wow! I seriously need more of this. I can not wait to get a hold of a full copy now. Crossan always manages to pull you in, keep you in...

Holy cannoli, are you serious? You draw us in that much and then cut us off?? I need the rest as soon as possible! Wow, this extract was amazing - poignant, beautifully written, and immersive. I felt all that Toffee feels. This has just been bumped up my list of most anticipated releases for 2019. I need more! Sarah Crossan has written gold here. Such phenomenal prose, and the layout is very cool, too. Thank you for approving me for this.

Intriguing opening to what will surely be another emotional read from Sarah Crossan. Her verse novels are like nothing else in YA, tackling difficult topics with elegance and never patronising her reader. Roll on May!

Such a lovely book, I received a preview copy from the publisher to my work. I really enjoyed both characters and their journey throughout. You can't do wrong with a Sarah Crossan, she writes good characters very well, with lots of emotion.

'I love the idea of being sweet and hard, a girl with a name for people to chew on. A girl who could break teeth.'

I didn't realise that this was only an extract of Toffee when I requested it, but it certainly does the job of whetting your appetite for Sarah Crossan's upcoming release.

In this extract we meet Allie, a girl who has run away from home to escape her abusive father. Allie ends up staying with a lady called Marla who has dementia and christens her Toffee, believing Allie to be someone from her past.

I'm excited to see the relationship between these two develop, because some of my favourite novels have explored the dynamics between teenagers and older relatives with dementia (Becoming by Jenny Downham and How Not To Disappear by Clare Furniss in particular), and I think Sarah Crossan's signature verse could be a beautiful style in which to tell this tale.

Enjoyed the extract and to be honest I don't usually to choose to read extracts or excerpt. If I had access to the full edition of the book I would definitely read it. It has a rather unique chapter style. I quickly grew attached to the characters and wanted to know more.
I have given the extract 3/5 as I don't think I would ever give an extract 5/5 anyway. The extract did its job perfectly in that it made me want to read more of book.

THe opening is beautifully fractured and winding. It’s set up inspires intrigue and wonder and I personally can’t wait to read more.

Thought this was the full book at first but realised it sadly it's an extract! However, it doesn't matter because I'm a huge fan of Sarah Crossan and this has just made me more excited to read this properly. I just know it's going to be incredible.

Oh my goodness what fresh hell is this?! Where a book is so sublime and so unique and so compelling and BAM it’s all over! What?! This extract is STUNNING and I can foresee that it will only get better. Those with full proofs are so lucky - this book is going to be big.

Oh Bloomsbury you big tease only giving us 40 pages! Enough though to already know that Crossans incredibly deft prose captures more emotion and more insightful social commentary than many 500+ page novels manage.
Can’t wait to read the full book

First things first, I think it's very refreshing to find a young adult novel about domestic abuse and dementia! This extract definitely still managed to capture the lovely writing style associated with Sarah Crossan. Despite only reading a few pages, I was instantly hooked on the story and the characters, and feel like I desperately need to know more about them. I usually shy away from anything even remotely poetry-based, but there's something about this that I just love!

Extract for Sarah Crossan's new book, very quick to read but is has intrigued me! Allison has run away from her home, from her abusive father. With nowhere to go, she hides in an empty garden shed. Marla however finds her and mistakes her for someone else she knows, Toffee. Finding that Marla is the only person living in her house, Allison decides to stay the night. This is where the extract ended. I'm a big fan of Crossan's other work and this has the same beautiful style of writing. I'm interested to see where the story goes, what will happen to Allison and Marla and will we ever find out who the real Toffee is.
