4.5 heart pounding, what the heck is going on stars! This was a completely atmospheric thriller. Character driven and suspenseful, I was thoroughly engaged and couldn’t put it down! The plot throws out red herring after red herring until the reader is completely twisted around until the final shocking reveal. One of my favorite authors, her newest is not one to be missed! Thank you to the publisher for the advance reader in exchange for my honest review.

In The Dark is a retelling of And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie. I enjoyed the fast paced plot and the characters were interesting. This was a very good reimagining of Christie’s famous novel, but there were a few issues.

Indigenous/First Nations people’s monuments/cultural symbols/artwork items were utilized in a negative way, as warnings (calling them “freakish”, “ugly”, “god-awful”, “leering”, “garish”) without having another character point out that is a problem. Items such as totems and masks were unnecessary, wholly unrelated to the plot and characters, and included solely for suspense and in an attempt to ratchet up fear and demonstrate to the reader that something is seriously wrong and scary.

Further, I wish the book had stated that the underage prostitute (also referred to as a hooker in this book) was actually a sex trafficked minor – you can’t be a prostitute if you are underage because you cannot consent to sex. Calling a minor a prostitute/sex worker is wrong.

Content Warnings: <spoiler> rape; incest; fairly gruesome descriptions of injuries; discussions of child deaths </spoiler>

So.

This novel held a promise of being great. But with unreliable and unidentifiable narrators, too many of them, slow pacing, and a cover which doesn't hold much interest, I succumbed to boredom and simply skipped on this novel after 4%.

Hence why, not a recommend. But I would still like to try this author's works in the future.

Until the next read,

TMr

In The Dark by Loreth Anne White is a cleverly revamp version of Agatha Christie's "And Then There Were None". The promise of a luxury vacation and a possible contract opportunity, a group of people are lured to a remote resort spa. As a fierce storm barrels down and all contact with the outside is cut off, the guests fear that it’s not a getaway but a sick game with deadly consequences. Each one has a secret. Each one has something to hide. And now, as darkness closes in, they all have something to fear—including one another. Because someone is picking off the guests, one by one.

This was a great murder mystery. It was full of suspense and drama right up to the end. If you like whodunits, then this is a must read.

Thank you to NetGalley, Montlake Romance and Loreth Anne White for a copy of "In the Dark" in exchange of an honest review.

I kept reading this book to get some answers and just to finish it. The setting and atmosphere is the main reason why kept reading. The characters? Not so much.

This was one of those books that although I couldn’t say was fantastic by any stretch just had to read it all just to get the full unravel. I enjoyed the way the action moved between the Lodge party and the search team and thought it was very well done with just enough of each The characters of the searchers were by far my favourites but that was I suppose how the author wanted it. I’m certain this will be one in a number of books featuring Callie and Mason as the partnership worked really well.

FUN!

“Cursed are those who Sin
And Lie to cover their deeds
For a Monster will rise within
And they must Repent.”

In the Dark is an entertaining psychological thriller about a group of people lured under false pretenses to a remote cabin as part of one sick individual’s plot for revenge.

There are many elements that I loved about this book, including the ominous atmosphere and some of the characters (the normal ones and the crazies!).

Told through the eyes of multiple narrators, Loreth Anne White smartly crafts a modern retelling of Agatha Christie’s And Then There Were None. Combined with a reality TV Survivor-like premise, what’s not to love?! Although there are many characters and points of view, all of them were developed and easy to keep track of. I recently complained in one of my reviews about too many narrators detracting from the plot and character development, but White balances both with ease.

This book spoke to my inner armchair detective. Many of the characters are twisted and their devious nature kept me guessing! I did guess the murderer early on, but many red herrings, along with some twists had me constantly second-guessing myself. I also loved the chemistry between Callie and Mason, and hope to see them in a future book.

FYI, this includes major spoilers for And Then There Were None, so don’t read In the Dark if you plan on or want to read Christie’s book.

I highly recommend this twisty and atmospheric thriller.

3.5/5

I had mixed feelings on this one, but I still think it’s worth the read!

We’ll start with what I liked best.

In the Dark was tightly-plotted and ominous. I LOVED the premise of a group of people being trapped in a remote mountain lodge, each of them harboring a deep, dark secret. And I enjoyed following the two main characters (a detective and a search & rescue expert) as they picked apart the puzzle.

I’m a big fan of wilderness thrillers (ala The Naturalist, The Last One, etc.) and the setting here was no exception - it sounded both beautiful & foreboding.

But there were a few things I didn’t love quite AS much.

With so many characters and points of view, It was a little tough to follow at times. (But I did love the ‘And Then There Were None’ Agatha Christie vibes!)

Also, some parts of the story (especially the beginning) felt bogged down with details. Specifically the detective/search & rescue procedures. Don’t get me wrong - I love the details in a story! But in this case, I felt like some of them were unnecessary, and it made the story a little hard to get into at times.

But around the 25% mark the story really started to pick up steam, and I had to find out how it would end!

Loreth Anna White’s latest release IN THE DARK is a true mystery with a bit of suspense and psychological thriller to round out her novel. As a group of eight strangers are brought together under the guise of a posh spa getaway, the ugly truth begins to reveal itself. The eight soon realize their one connection and everything begins to unravel.

White did a wonderful job of giving a full story to each character. With such a large group, she was able to masterfully tell a story without it feeling disjointed and choppy. Sure, there were a few times where it seemed busy among the transition of chapters, but nothing that distracts from the reading.

I have a complete review on my site.

In the Dark, is a thriller. Keeps you on the edge of your seat. Callie and Mason are called to a downed plane to figure out who, what where, and why.
Theme is that of And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie.
You really want to sympathize with some of the characters.

This was quite the twisty and thrilling book! I read through it at an incredibly fast pace, anxious to find out what would happen next. Many, many unexpected turns made this the ultimate thriller!

In the Dark by Loreth Anne White is an exciting thriller, that I really enjoyed. I will definitely be reading more books by this author. Eight people were invited to a luxury wilderness spa. Or were they? Nothing is as it seems and no once can be trusted. Agatha Christie novel, And Then There Were None, is mentioned in the book, and this book has a similar concept. I don't want to give too much away. Once I started this book, I could not stop reading. I strongly recommend this book.
I reviewed a digital arc provided by NetGalley and the publisher. Thank you.

This starts as a bunch of people heading to a remote upscale lodge and quickly turns into an And-Then-There-Were-None fight to survive. I am a fan of Loreth Anne White's Angie Palorino series and was excited to read this. I enjoyed this a lot, and it would be nice if Callie and/or Mason, of the rescue and police teams respectively, showed up in some future books. I don't know that I loved the ending, but I couldn't put it down overall. Four stars.

Loved it!!! Loved the story, characters and writing style- so pretty much everything. I had to make a little cheat sheet to keep everyone straight. The beginning was a little slow for me and I blame that on not knowing who everyone was. It was just confusing. There's a lot of characters to juggle. There were so many twists and turns. For awhile I was suspicious of everyone. Never would have suspected who was behind most of the murders. I wasn't ready for the book to end. What happens to Callie and her husband? What happens to Mason? That was unexpected about Peter, Callie's husband. I thought he was probably having a midlife crisis and living with another woman. So much work went into getting everybody together. Too bad the person didn't use their energy for good instead of revenge. I enjoyed finding out how everyone was connected. I think if everyone would have communicated and told the truth, it would have ended better for most of them. That lodge was terrifying. I would have locked myself in one of the rooms and just hoped someone came to rescue me. If I ever get invited to a secluded mountain range, I will say NO!!!

Definitely recommend the book. It was a great suspense/mystery. This is the first book I read by the author and I can't wait to read more. Would love to read a series around Callie and Mason.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from Montlake Romance through NetGalley. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

In the Dark was a riveting story, a mystery, a reckoning, and while this mystery wraps up, I hope we get another story with Callie and Mason, the two investigators.

We’re brought into this story as a group of nine prospective vendors are about to be taken to a luxury resort in the middle of the Canadian wilderness, each with eyes on securing a contract to supply transport, housekeeping, security and such when the resort opens. The location is secret until they’re in route on the plane that must fly them into the location. But things are not as they seem which quickly becomes apparent when they arrive.

There are eight people by the time they reach the lodge, each with their own secrets, a mystery from the past, and justice looming. As this all plays out there’s suspicion cast at everyone in their group, sinister warnings, panic, and accusations. Soon it’s an all-out fight for survival miles away from civilization. At the heart of the story is why? Why this group? What happened in the past to connect them, and who is seeking retribution? Also, in the fray are the new RCMP Sergeant, Mason, and the Search and Rescue leader, Callie, who try to piece together the mystery after the fact, and search for the survivors, if any. The story goes back and forth to the events with the eight at the lodge and the investigation a week later.

It’s hard to speak much to the plot without ruining things, but I was kept on the edge of my seat trying to figure out what, if anything, these people had in common. all is revealed gradually as the events from the Lodge Group play out. There’s a huge nod to Agatha Christie’s And Then There Were None. As a diehard Agatha Christie fan, I enjoyed how In the Dark incorporated features of the story. It certainly put the Lodge Group on edge, because they never knew when the next shock would come. I was on the edge with them! Each of the Lodge Group have their own perspective, as do Callie and Mason from the search a week later.

Loreth Anne White did a superb job creating suspense, making me care for the characters, even some of the despicable ones (well, just a little). The setting of In the Dark was dark and atmospheric, in the wintery Canadian wilderness, and the lodge featured sounded like somewhere I’d love to visit, without any murders, obviously! Like I said in the outset, this mystery is wrapped up, but there’s hope for another story with Callie and Mason. I need more!

A copy was kindly provided by Montlake in exchange for an honest review.

An homage to Agatha Christie's And Then There Were None? Sign me up! I love a closed/locked room mystery.

With the promise of a luxury vacation, eight people are brought to an isolated location in the wilderness somewhere in the Pacific Northwest. All of them have secrets. They soon realize that they’ve been bought to this place under false pretences and someone is trying to kill them off one by one. Who will survive? Will anyone survive?

This books also follows RCMP homicide cop Mason Deniaud and SAR expert Callie Sutton in the isolated Canadian town of Kluhane Bay as they try to piece together what happened to these strangers as we discover that one of them is alive.

We follow alternate perspective both in the past and present. The author does a great job at giving the characters complex and well rounded backstories. Even though you go into the story knowing what to expect the author does a good job at catching you off guard. If you’re a fan of Christie’s classic you’ll enjoy this modern spin on it.

Thank you to Montlake and NetGalley for a review copy of this book.

9 people lured to a remote location for a possible job. Unfortunately one of them is a killer. There are a few surprises but I wouldn't say they were major twists. Wanting to see who'd be left standing kept me reading.

What a great ride!
A perfect read for the suspense lovers. I was intrigued from the first chapter and page by page I loved how everything unfolded. Apparently strangers are forced to live in a closedown house where nothing is at it seems and the past comes hunting them.
So many twists and turns that I didn’t see coming my way and a great story overall.
