I really enjoyed this book!! I read a lot in this genre and sometimes it gets too creepy or the heroine is too weak — but this one had all the right moves!!! Alice Henderson receives a threatening phone call on a Wednesday, and this begins a series of stalking incidents on Wednesdays. Why Wednesday? Who can be after her? Are her friends and family safe? What she doesn’t know is that there is a tortured soul who has turned his hatred towards her and Wednesday represents a recurring horrible day from his childhood. Told from the perspective of the stalked and stalker, “I Will Make You Pay” is a well-written, fast-paced mystery that kept my interest and never made me want to roll my eyes like some books in this genre do. I highly recommend this fun read. Disclaimer– I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review from NetGalley. Thank you NetGalley and the publisher for allowing me to read this very enjoyable book for free!! #NetGalley 🤩🤩🤩🤩 |
Rarely do I not finish a book, but this one I just could not continue reading. I got to 16%. I gave it the good old college try, to no avail. |
Although I did finish this mystery to find out what happened, I was very underwhelmed by the repetitive, clunky writing and the drawn-out plot with little happening over long stretches. A small-town journalist receives a threatening phone call and subsequently realizes that a couple of other things happened on previous Wednesdays that tied into the stalker events that keep happening. As others have noted, the protagonist is a caricature of a foolish, stubborn, yet supposedly 'brave' woman with a past she's hidden and who is concerned about what people will think. The 'thrilling' tale is told via three POVs, Alice (the journalist), a private detective, and someone denoted only as 'Him'. I was interested in the private detective's story, which alluded to previous cases, making me wonder if there was some backstory in previous novels by the author. The plot was rather ho-hum, the 'secrets' alluded to several times were a let-down, and I started wanting to just skim the sections from the poor boy, 'Him' even though, yes, I knew of course that he must grow up to be the 'stalker.' I grew tired of the Alice's dithering thoughts, worrying about what would happen the next Wednesday and how she would keep herself safe while not being too bored by not being allowed to do her reporting work (which of course she defied since she simply couldn't NOT write!) The big reveal at the end was a bit of a surprise, though by then I was bored and fed up with inconsistencies and repetition. Too many unnecessary words with little happening. I know that a lot of people like these kinds of books that are cranked out by authors who have some talent but don't really write or edit that well. I'm not a fan. However, I do appreciate that writing is work and that not everyone is as critical a reader as I am. To each her own. I doubt I will waste my time reading another book by this author. I received a free e-copy of I Will Make You Pay by Teresa Driscoll from NetGalley for my honest review. Every Wednesday, like clockwork, journalist Alice Henderson receives an anonymous threat. The threats are happening more frequently and she is in fear of her life. Alice's boyfriend hires a private investigator (Matthew)to find the person responsible for the threats. Things quickly turn for the worst. A intense read that will keep you wanting more. |

Thank you to Netgalley for this advanced reader's copy. This book is twisty and thrilling. Will keep you guessing until the very end. |
This book will have you guessing the whole way through and becoming suspicious of a few characters as the story unfolded. The story is told from different points of view. A real page turner. |
I'm seriously torn with this one. As a lover of psychological thrillers I've been lucky enough to get a few from Netgalley. I've read some fabulous authors and that means they set the bar high. Very high. This one just couldn't quite stick the landing. First the good. The story was interesting and I like the characters (mostly). There are some twists and turns that are decent. There are also time jumps, telling the story of a young Alice and a young Tom. You know as Tom gets older that he's going to be the antagonist of the story, but the real story is in the details. There were some parts that were left out of Tom's story, and I believe that's for the best. Alice's story was pretty much the same. We see a few things happen, she mostly has an idyllic life. The pacing of the back and forth was very well done. I did like how much information was given and when. Matthew and Melanie were also great additions to the plot. I read that they have story lines in other books, but I didn't feel like I missed anything by reading this out of order. Now I feel like I have to go look for them. Although not thoroughly a fan of this particular book, I'm a fan of theirs enough that I feel like this is completely warranted! And who doesn't love adding to their TBR? I didn't like Alice's reactions to everything. Now, this is supposed to be based on Teresa Driscoll's life as a journalist and three calls she got from a stalker. So, I'm assuming the reactions were somewhat accurate, but they seem over the top for the book. Alice is so worried about what everyone thinks about her that it seems strange to react the way she has. Little tiny spoiler, sort of, Alice is hiding a secret that... again... maybe seems a bit, blase. Keeping that from the police seems like a terrible idea! It was not important. What doesn't match is the timeline at the very end. There's something that happens and I feel like the timing seems off. Or it needed more of a build up in the present to show how. It is all explained like the Scooby Doo villain at the end. They even mention that because Alice couldn't figure out why she was being targeted, so the antagonist goes so far as to explain the entire plot. Unfortunately, I was able to figure out the antagonist because it was cliche. Again, I think this is where the time line failed. There could have been just a bit more about the antagonist added in. There do seem to be red herrings, but unfortunately those are too perfect. I also was able to listen to this through Audible. Unfortunately, the worst part was how many times her name is used. Every single time someone talks to Alice they say her name. It's frustrating and probably added 1,000 words to the book. It is said, literally that much. All in all, I have read some very well thought out psychological thrillers. This one felt like it hit middle of the pack. Not terrible, but not perfect. If you enjoy thrillers and want a quick, easy read, then I would recommend. |
Alice has a stalker. Every Wednesday she lives in fear of what he will do that week. Her current boyfriend, Tom, hires an ex-police officer, Matthew to protect her on Wednesdays and find out who is stalking her. Turns out, Alice has a big secret. Can Matthew protect her with the secret revealed and solve the mystery? I Will Make You Pay is suspenseful and thrilling. A very entertaining novel with relatable characters and an interesting storyline, I was shocked when the stalker was revealed. I had no clue! Worthy read! |
This is my second book from this author and WOW!! This was fantastic! I was so hooked from the beginning and I love a good stalker story. I was intrigued by the story and it was well paced with multiple POV's. I thought I had it all figured out and then nope, I didn't! I love it when that happens and I know it is a well written story! I thrillers are your cup of tea, be sure to pick this one up 4.5 big stars! |

It seems like an ordinary Wednesday, until the phone rings. A mysterious caller with a chilling threat. Journalist Alice Henderson hangs up, ready to dismiss it as a hoax against the newspaper. But the next Wednesday, the stalker makes another move—and it becomes clear that this is all about Alice. The book wasn’t boring, but it wasn’t a page turner and I guessed the stalker/protagonist early on in the book which was a bit of a disappointment. I would give this book 3.5 stars, would have rounded it up to 4 stars if the ending was better. I’d like to thank NetGalley for giving me the chance to read this book in return for a review |
Alternating between the present and the past this thriller serves up the twists and keeps them rolling out until the very end when it is revealed why journalist Alice is being stalked and by whom. Thanks to the publisher and netgalley for the arc. |
I am a huge fan Of Teresa Driscoll and I will make you pay was so so good. I really liked the main character Alice and the story is written so well I was reading as fast as I could to figure out who was after her! I'm not sure what research the author did to write this story but it seemed totally realistic and believable, which is why it seemed so scary and bone chilling! |
A stalker mystery/thriller always gets my attention. I enjoyed the overall storyline of this one. I just didn't really connect with the characters, and I thought some parts were just thrown in. I also had a good feeling about what was going to happen at the end, and that always makes me a little disappointed. Overall, it was a good story, but I wouldn't read it again. *Thank you to Netgalley and Amazon Publishing for the copy in exchange for an honest review.* |

The book starts off well and manages to maintain the pace through the middle but the final reveal felt like a let-down. I felt like the characters were inconsistent at times. It was an okay read overall. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the arc. |

Fast-paced thriller. This is another brilliant book by this author. The tension in the writing and the character depiction is perfect... and you lurch from one suspect to another.. with a totally unexpected finale So many twists and turns, it made it difficult to put down. A must-read in my opinion |
This book was not great to read while home alone. I had a creeped out feeling in the pit of my stomach whilst reading it. Looking forward to reading more from this author. |
Fast paced, suspenseful read. Alice is a journalist with a stalker. As you get to know her and the other characters you play a guessing game on can you figure out who it is before they strike again?? Thank you NetGalley, Teresa Driscoll and Thomas & Mercer for this advanced reader edition and hearing my honest review. Looking forward to reading more with you #partners |
'I am going to use cheese wire on you.' The sinister first line of the opening chapter and I am hooked! Alice is a journalist at a local paper, and when she first receives this call, she doesn't realise that Wednesday is about to become her most terrifying day of the week - for Alice has a stalker, and every Wednesday he has a new terror planned for her! Although police take the situation seriously, lack of evidence initially means that they have nothing to act upon, so concerned boyfriend, Tom, hires PI Matthew Hill to protect Alice. As the stalker persists and the attacks become increasingly threatening, the police and Matthew begin to fear for Alice's life, and the hunt for his identity becomes a race against time. The story is told from three perspectives; Alice, Matthew...and the person known simply as 'Him.' The titles entitled 'Him,' are terribly sad and horrifying all at the same time as they build a picture of the man behind the stalker, the abuse he endured, the volcanic anger and rage building and waiting to erupt, and the devastating significance of Wednesday. A great read. Enjoy. |
I received a copy of this book from Netgalley in exchange for my honest opinion. This is the first book I’ve read by this author and I can say that I can’t wait to read another book by her. I found this very easy to read and it drew me in from page one. It held my interest to the very last page. Don’t miss out on reading this! |
