Catherine Ryan Hyde addresses the subject of depression and suicide which affects both children and adults, and weaves a wonderfully beautiful epic tale. You empathize with the three main characters, two who are children and see how they help each other and are devoted to each other throughout their lives. We come to understand how friendship and understanding soon evolves into a lifetime of special relationships. It is an absolutely a beautiful story. Ms. Hyde’s books are always page turners, impossible to put down, and leaves the reader wanting to both see what happens and for the book to never end. I recommend this author and especially this new novel most highly. It is 5 star!!

I have just begun to read Catherine's books. This is the third one. I love how
they are all so different, yet so good. This is the story of a couple of young
teenagers and how they get through life in the late '60s and early '70s. I love
going back to those days when I was a teen as well.
This is a really good book with some hard lessons to experience. I would
love to read this one again someday.

Thank you to NetGalley, Catherine Ryan Hyde and your Publisher for giving me the chance
to read this wonderful book!

Having read all of Catherine Ryan Hyde’s novel, I come to expect wonderful, well developed characters, lovable dogs, a feisty cat and frequently a horse. I just finished an ARC of Stay, and all were part of this beautiful story, except a horse.
As usual, a message is delivered in her stories and that was true here. A single choice can alter the direction of a life. In this case, that could be said of several of her interesting characters, but more so Lucas. The choices he made impacted his own life and those of his brother Roy, his friend Connor and Zoe, a local outcast.
This is a story of friendships, struggle, difficult decisions and complicated relationships. It’s also about the love and bonds that animals bring us, with their ability to comfort when we’re sad or lonely. Lucas is young, but wise beyond his years, carrying burdens, very heavy for a young teen. His path was certainly affected by the choices that he and the others made.
This novel is beautifully written, just what we have come to expect from Catherine Ryan Hyde. I loved it! Thank you to Net Galley for the ARC.

This book focuses on Lucas, who is 14 years old. His older brother is fighting in the Vietnam war, his friend Conner is withdrawing more each day, he befriends a woman who lives in the woods, he finds a passion in running. This book is an interesting perspective from the young man's view on the war, addiction, grief, forgiveness, and many other events. A good read.

I’ve been a fan of Catherine Ryan Hyde for years. In this newest book, Stay, this author delivers a novel that takes us back in time to show us how human we are.

The writing is thoughtful and the characters are filled with life. I appreciate the time Catherine Ryan Hyde spent getting this work done well.

A welcoming literary read for a wide audience.

This was such a touching read. I was utterly transfixed by this novel as I read it over the course of a single day.
It was gentle.
It was sweet.
It was heartbreaking.
And it was life affirming.

The majority of the novel takes place in the summer of 1969 and focuses on 14 year old Lucas Painter. Lucas is the sweetest character ever. I have never felt so maternal about a character when reading a book as I have about Lucas. He's just on life's precipice about to become a man, but still a boy...
And it's this mix of childish innocence with a growing maturity that makes him a beautiful character to read about.

Lucas is the type of person that takes on other people's worries. His heart isn't big enough for how much he cares. His parents are constantly arguing at home, his older brother Roy is fighting in Vietnam and his best friend Connor is struggling with depression. And Lucas wants to help them all but doesn't know how. That is until one day he goes running in the woods and comes across two big dogs and they all start running for joy together. And then Lucas meets their owner, the mysterious Zoe Dinsmore who lives alone in the woods with just these two dogs for company. And thusly follows a life altering summer that moulds the lives of all these characters in ways that they couldn't have imagined.

The story touches on issues of coping with grief, addiction and depression through the eyes of fourteen year old Lucas along with exploring the impact of wartime on both those who are drafted and those left behind. And Catherine Ryan Hyde explores these issues with great aplomb by never once treating them in any casual manner, instead giving them the gravitas they require.

This is a very lovely book that would make a great book club read as there are so many talking points and discussion worthy issues.

My rating is hovering between 3.5 and 4 stars with my only drawback being the very short Part Two that occurs at the end of the novel (90% stage) . While many readers will no doubt enjoy the fifty year flash forward to see how the characters' lives have ended up, to me this detracted from some of the magic of that long summer of 1969. But this is a very personal opinion as I am a lover of open ended stories. However, if you like your books to finish up with no lose ends then this is certainly the book for you.

Recommended.
