I was really excited to read this after loving They Both Die At The End and What If It's Us.

Adam Silvera's new novel introduces you to Brighton and Emil, twin brothers with very different views. Brighton dreams of joining the Spell Walkers where as Emil wants to complete opposite. But it's Emil that finds himself thrust into the middle of the conflict.

I wasn't really a fan of this, despite loving Adam's other books. I would definitely recommend it to my students though as I know some of them would really enjoy this sort of book.

Firstly Thank you to NetGalley for sending me a copy of this book to review. This novel is about two brothers who grew up in New York City idolising a group of spell wakers, who are tasked to rid the world of spectres. I think this book has good merit but I'm not sure the execution was all that great. I enjoyed Emil's storyline and I liked the magical beings we got to meet in this story but ultimately I found that the pacing was all over the place and in the end I just didn't care about the characters. I have enjoyed Adam Silvera's other books and I think maybe this fantasy novel just isn't for me.

This book unfortunately didn’t grab me. There were too many perspectives which made it confusing and hard to follow, the cliffhanger was weak, and the main characters aren’t very likeable. Overall it just felt quite boring and dull and didn’t make me want to read more.

Unfortuntely it has taken me a really long time to read this book. It just wasn't my cup of tea. I can see what Adam was trying to do - but I think I am the wrong audience for the book. There is potential there but sadly the story didn't connect with me

I'd put off reading Infinity Son for months because of the poor reviews that I'd heard, but I decided to finally dive in with a friend and we buddy read it together. Overall the book was ok, but not amazing - it had a good concept but I didn't feel that it was expanded upon enough? Emil was great, really liked him, but Brighton - ugh, I strongly disliked him. He had no redeemable characteristics that I could see, he was selfish and came across as spoiled and extremely jealous.

The plot was at times confusing as there was were little world building; and it felt like there was an info dump of random facts that had no real bearing on the story. Disappointing read for me unfortunately, unsure if I would read the sequel.

Unfortunately this novel did not meet my expectations at all. I was looking forward to reading Silvera's first fantasy series and there was quite a lot of hype surrounding it. I had expected something different than what I read - rushed writing, confused and disjointed world building, and a plot which didn't engage me at all.

I will look forward to other novels which Silvera writes but I will not be continuing with this series.

This was okay, but I didn't love it as much as I do Adam's contemporary. I really struggled with the magic system in this book, it felt very confused and by the end of the book I still wasn't sure what each of the different types of being were or how they were linked. I also found the action scenes very repetitive, but I think someone who enjoys real action-driven plots might like this more. I enjoy much more character-driven books, so this wasn't for me. I loved the relationship between the two brothers and the story that unfolded between them and could not get enough of this aspect of the book.

I got to 60 percent and I just couldn't continue, I skim read to see what happened at the end, but this book sadly just wasn't for me.

I had high hopes for this book, a YA Fantasy book with a gay main character with super power abilities, just sounded like a book I would love.

I was excited to read Infinity Son, and I just felt really confused from the start. Lots of information at once, lots of names and characters, and I just didn't feel connected to the main characters at all.

I usually really enjoy Books by Adam Silvera. I would definitely say you should try this book for yourself, as everyone has different opinions.

*Thank you to Netgalley, Simon &Schuster and Adam for the Ecopy in exchange for an honest review.*

*I received an earc via netgalley however this in no way influenced my opinion*

So this is my first Adam Silvera book and I was so excited when I heard about this, it has LGBTQ+ rep with a gay MC written by a gay author. However, I have to say I am a bit disappointed.

The biggest issue I had while reading this was the lack of world-building. We are introduced to Celestials, Specters, and Blood Casters with little to no information on what that actually is. Therefore for the first few chapters, I was super confused about what was going on. I also felt that the pacing was a bit off.

I liked Emil’s character, it was fun to follow his journey and see his powers develop throughout. However I strongly disliked Brighton, I thought he was incredibly selfish and only cared about his youtube views and being famous. There were many side characters that I wished were developed more like Iris.

Overall I was a let down by this, I felt there was an issue with world-building and pacing.

I attempted this one but sadly it just wasn't for me . I appreciate the writing but I think the general feel of it and the content just didn't appeal to me personally

Unfortunately I am no longer interested in reading this book, therefore I will not be reviewing it any further.

New York brothers Emil and Brighton always idolized the Spell Walkers, a magical vigilante group who fight against the essence-stealing spectres, but when Emil manifests is own powers both his heroism and brotherly bonds of love are tested.

This is an exciting and gripping narrative! Alonside the elements of brotherhood, romance, gang war, dark rituals and a narrative that spans across time, Adam Silvera's first fantasy novel also features an authentic inclusion of LGBTQ characters. Fair warning - classic Silvera heartbreak and plot twists in abundance!

- DNF at 39% -

Emil and Brighton are twin brothers who live in a world where two groups of people with powers are at war with each other - the Spell Walkers and the specters.
Brighton is a superfan of the Spell Walkers and wishes he had powers of his own. Unlike his brother, Emil doesn't want powers, he just wants the violence to stop, and to stop living in fear of the enforcers.
Then one day, accidentally getting into a fight, Emil discovers that he has a power of his own, and finds that the Spell Walkers and specters both want Emil on their side.
Emil doesn't want to fight, but does he have a choice?

I have to admit that I was a bit hesitant going into Infinity Son having seen quite a few people say that they were disappointed by the book, but I was determined to give it a fair chance, which I feel like I have.
The premise was interesting and I liked that there were mythological creatures like phoenixes and hydra in a modern day setting.
One of my favourite things was the diversity.
None of the characters really stood out for me.
Emil and Brighton were very different people, and I found Emil much easier to relate to. Brighton did annoy me a bit at times.
What I read of the plot was okay, but it didn't hold my interest and not that much happened in the 39% that I did read.
I struggled to connect with the characters and didn't care what happened to them. I also couldn't connect with the writing style.
It got to the point where I was just skim reading and not actually reading the book properly, so I decided to DNF.
I'm disappointed that I didn't enjoy this more as the concept intrigued me.

Unfortunately, this wasn't for me.

Sad to say that this just wasn't up my ally.

I love Adam Silvera's contemporary novels, so I was really excited to give this a shot. But in the end it just wasn't for me. I don't even wanna generalize this and say it was particularly bad. It's just that urban fantasy is not my thing and this book, sadly, wasn't the exception.
I found myself annoyed by the setting and the characters pretty fast and couldn't have cared less about... pretty much everything in this book?

Kudos as always for the representation though, we love to see it.

I cannot believe this book is being marketed as fantasy - it genuinely would struggle to be any further from fantasy, even urban fantasy. It's a straight-up contemporary superhero story set in what appears to be our world, from the name-dropping of social media platforms. Superhero fiction is a totally distinct genre from fantasy, and it does Infinity Son a huge injustice to allow people to go into it expecting "a magical war generations in the making" when it's got no magic and no sense of history.

The world-building is non-existent - there's no explanation as to what the powers are, how they function, or when they showed up, and for a book which relies on the MC being a reincarnation of a recent historical figure, there's zero explanation of the historical events that are supposed to loom so large over the plot. It's never really explained what's going on with the different crews of heroes - the main character is forced to join one, but it seems like there should have been more options to work alone, or with other people? I was confused about pretty much everyone's motivations, and the plot never comes together beyond 'those guys are bad, let's stop them' - I really wasn't sure what needed to be stopped or why. There are magical phoenixes in this world too, but again, we learn nothing about them. There's a huge plot twist on the final page that comes out of nowhere, but not in a 'Wow' way, in a 'we literally could not have guessed that because it makes no sense'.

It's just a seriously weirdly incoherent book. It's easy to read, certainly, with a modern and slangy narration (all four POV characters have the same narrative voice, more or less) although I could have done with way less focus on who had how many Youtube followers. The big problem is, there's no depth to it at all. Maybe the author should stick to contemporary fiction, where he doesn't have to explain the world, because man, did he fail at it here. Lukewarm praise is maybe due for the diversity of the characters, but again, I felt this was shallow (and definitely wasn't enough to hold up the shreds of the story).

If you want a really funny, well-built superhero story with diverse characters (both queer and POC), can I recommend Sarah Kuhn's Heroine Complex books?

The first fantasy novel from Adam Silvera. I feel it was a good book, a different magic system. Good characters although I feel they could be more fleshed out, they had interesting personalities.

I really wanted to like this book, so had to work through a lot of issues.
The pros:
The story is ok, and there are some very good elements.
Cons:
The world building and characterisation was a bit light.

Thank you for giving me the chance to review this book.

DNF'd on page 130.

I feel so bad for DNF'ing this, however, I'm one-third into the story and the problems are pretty big ones for me. The lack of world-building is astonishing - fantasy, even one that has a lot of similarities with our world, needs proper world-building in order to introduce readers to the world and explains how things work. I'm still very much confused of the different types of phoenixes, magic users, and how the government works, because all the terms are casually mentioned but nothing is explained. I can't enjoy a story that confuses me. Another thing is that I don't care much for the characters. There's multiple point of views but most of them sound the same - only one who's very distinct is Brighton and he spends most time going over his Youtube channel statistics (I didn't expect to have such social media inclusion and frankly, not that interested about how many views Brighton gets and whose video goes viral). Also, the dialogue can get rather cliché and this far, the twists haven't been surprising at all.

I'm aware that I'm in a minority here since others seem to love the story - and that's great! However, I think it's better for me to abandon this book rather than force myself to finish it. Due to my decision to not finish, I won't be posting it on the company website or give a star review anywhere. I believe there will be plenty of people who will find the story enjoyable even when I did not.

This book was a little different to what I was expecting and I kinda wished for a little bit more? The writing was good but the story felt a bit slow and at times boring

After reading the author note I was hopeful I would love this. I am sorry to say this did not happen. The book follows two normal brothers in a world where some people are born with powers and other gain powers through the blood of animals.

On a positive note I feel as if Adam Silvera has some interesting ideas however the execution of these ideas just did not work for me. I wanted more information to help me understand the work and the characters motivations within.

This is Silvera's first fantasy so I hope that he continues to use his interesting ideas to build a more cohesive fantasy writing style.
