I vow not to spoil anything in this review and …it will be difficult as the synopsis is fairly vague about major events but let’s do it!

First, I will begin by telling you that not all of Colleen Hoover’s books appeal to me as some had triggers and others are darker but I am happy to report Regretting You was just one of these favorite reads for me.

If I had to put a label on this book though I would be very puzzled as it’s not exactly YA nor mainly adult so maybe NA? There is romance yes but also some secrets. You also have heavy feelings and lots of tears. And if it wasn’t enough this story gives you many things to think about as far as mother/daughter relationship are concerned!

No label then!

In this story we will alternate between Morgan (the mom)’s point of view and her daughter’s (Clara). All are faced with a drama and will have to learn to go on with life, make the most of it all while struggling to communicate.

You will also have some romance and the male characters were really great guys but my only regret is that we did not have any chapter from their insight. Yet these men were so interesting that I would have loved seeing the story through their eyes.

What did I learn in this story? I am borrowing this idea from Lili @lilisblissfulpages as I think it’s perfect not to spoil anything!

I learned that you never know people close to you and that they can always betray you or hide some secret feelings;

I learned (but from my personal experience I already knew this) that relationships between a mom and her teenage of a daughter is a very hard exercise! Communication is difficult between Morgan and her daughter Clara.

When life is great this is intricate to communicate properly and navigate the slippery paths of teenage years but when something dramatic happens to shake your world to its core it becomes an impossible task!

Now THIS is a quote that I will use with my kids when they tell me I can’t give them advises as I made these mistakes while young: “It means people who make mistakes usually learn from them. That doesn’t make them hypocrites. It makes them experienced.”

I learned that when you are dutiful and selfless like Morgan it’s easy to get subjugated by your beloved ones and forget who you are in the process. After some years you will realize that you have lost yourself and don’t know the person you’ve become anymore.

“Little did I know, that routine would go on for a long time. Me being Chris’s devoted wife, taking care of his house and his daughter and his needs. Me being loyal to my little sister, helping her study her way through nursing school, cleaning up the messes she made of her twenties, giving her a place to stay every few years when she’d need help getting back on her feet. The day I found out I was pregnant, I stopped living life for myself. I think it’s time I figure out who I was meant to become before I started living my life for everyone else.”

I learned that when you hurt and feel betrayed you can think about any way to rebel against authority when you are a teenager. You just lash out because you are in pain. But when you are also a good person you will regret it pretty quickly because you are just not that bad girl. That’s what happened with Clara. She is a very mature and grounded girl but when everything is falling apart she needs something to numb the pain or make her forget. It did not help that her mom, Morgan, was determined to protect her daughter and did not explain some very important things.

I learned that even if the truth is painful and you want to protect your kids by staying silent this will cause more damage in the long term. Because we have to trust our kids and because they’ll always feel something is amiss.

When Clara suspected that Morgan hid something, she imagined the worse and lashed against her mom while all Morgan wanted to was to protect her daughter, even if she had to play the bad guy and be the one Clara despised.

I also learned that as long as you are not with your someone “special” you’ll have a content life but not the amazing life you could have experienced. Yet some people are ready to shoulder their responsibilities and make the most of it like Morgan while others won’t be able to stay honorable. I particularly love this quote as Colleen captured perfectly the working of relationship if you intend to stay with that person.

“Attraction is fun. So when you decide to commit to someone, you aren’t saying, ‘I promise I’ll never be attracted to anyone else.’ You’re saying, ‘I promise to commit to you, despite my potential future attraction to other people.’” I look at Clara. “Relationships are hard for that very reason. Your body and your heart don’t stop finding the beauty and the attraction in other people, simply because you’ve made a commitment to one person. If you ever find yourself in a situation where you’re drawn to someone else, it’s up to you to remove yourself from that situation before it becomes too hard to fight.””

This story and its character were wonderful and painful at the same time.

From the very first pages Colleen drew me in Morgan and Clara’s world. And honestly after the first chapter I feared that I would have a very frustrating book as Morgan made a sensible choice but one that I could already see was wrong for her or rather, asked a big sacrifice of her.

I was relieved to see it would not go as I expected and yet I felt ashamed for feeling happy as what launched the story in a totally different direction was an event that cut very deep into Morgan and Clara’s happiness.

This story is heavy with grief, with regrets, with unspoken truths and secrets. Yet this is also a very realistic story as this might happen (and probably happened in someone’s life) and that’s what made it so relatable.

The characters were complex, conflicted and battling their way through these hard times.

Both Morgan and her daughter had to learn something, to become different. They had to live their lives to the fullest, even with what happened.

And that’s another lesson here: when life is hard, YOU make the choice of making peace with it and go on stronger or you choose to resent life for throwing such a curveball at you and stay bitter, never going forward.

Would I recommend this story?

Absolutely if you are not afraid to deal with some sad topics and are looking for flawed but courageous characters living their life the best they could: imperfectly but selflessly.

Most relatable quote as a true bookworm (Clara is speaking here): “He’s right. When I’m here, I don’t have a clue what’s going on around me. Sometimes I sit here for two hours reading, and when I close the book, I’m surprised to look up and see that I’m not at home.”

Many thanks to Montlake Romance for this copy of Regretting You sent through Netgalley! This had no influence on my willing and always honest review.

Colleen Hoover delivers again with this one. It's sad, sweet with a mystery element to it.
I’d recommend you go into the book blind. But I will say this book is a book about choices – the ones that are made and the ones that are made for us, that we have to live with.

Reading a Colleen Hoover book is like coming home. No matter how long between books, when you pick up her books, you can’t help but get lost in the story.

Colleen Hoover has such an amazing talent with the written word. She gives us stories that are unique and original and capture our hearts and minds as we read. She gives her characters life and the emotion you feel while reading one of her books makes you feel like you are part of this world.

Regretting You is NO different!!!

I was swept up in the emotion right from the start. I honestly feel like we got 2 books in one. This book is told in Dual POV but from a mother and daughters POV. This story is about love, loss, family and relationships. She gives us an accurate account of how two different people can react to a tragic event. Yes there is a love story built into this book, 2 actually, but this book is so much more than that.

I will say the only thing I didn’t like about this story was that I was left with some unanswered questions. There is something Morgan does and I wish she would’ve done the opposite. I think it would’ve answered all my questions. But even saying that, I thoroughly enjoyed this book!!!

I felt we got the best of Colleen Hoover in this book. She gave us Morgan’s story (the mom) which felt like her adult themed books, but then she went back to her roots with Clara’s Story (the daughter) and gave us an amazing YA story as well.

I love the journey her books take the reader on. Colleen’s books always live on in my mind way after I finish them. I know I will be thinking about Regretting You for some time after, now that I am done with it.

If you are a fan of Colleen Hoover, you NEED to read this book. I think this is one of her best books, since I read Slammed and Hopeless.

Every Colleen Hoover book is a five-star book. I anticipate them like no other. She wrote another one that the reading public will devour. I'll update my review on this book as soon as it's published. I can't wait to see what people think of this one

I don't know how to describe what I'm feeling after finished this book. Colleen writes everything so beautifully and it wasn't different with this one, when I started reading I couldn't stop. I love how the book is focus on family, in the mother-daughter dynamic. Sometimes while reading I just wanted to explode in anger but at the same time understood the actions taken by the characters, it was amazing read the development in Morgan and Clara relationship, I cried, I laughed, I felt angry and I fell in love. And of course, the romance was ... flawless!

Colleen Hoover is always a go-to author for me. Her books are smart and thoughtful and always leave you a little better than you were when you started. I went into it blind because I find that with Colleen's books, it's better to be surprised and enjoy the journey. You start this one thinking it about sisters, Morgan and Jenny, and their boyfriends. Morgan finds herself pregnant and is unsure about her future. Suddenly you fast forward to her 17 year old daughter. At first I felt cheated because I was just getting to really like 17 year old Morgan and wanted more. I got so much more! There are a few bombshells that are dropped and a lot of teenage rebellion along the way. This is a story about falling in love, staying in love, marriage, parenting, growing up, consequences and a whole lot more. I think the title manages to apply to each and every character at some point in different ways. I fell hard and fast for Miller and that last chapter was everything for me.

Colleen Hoover is the Queen of heartbreaking, but hopeful stories. Through her characters she forces readers to reflect on themselves while experiencing the ebbs and flows of life. Regretting You touched on a lot of themes- grief, mother/daughter relationship, first loves, sacrificing for family. I laughed out loud at some points, cried my eyes out at others. Found myself wanting to read as I fell in love with Jonah and even a little with Miller. I related to both Morgan and Clara in different ways. and not wanting to read because I didn't want this novel to end.

simply outstanding!!

At the beginning of the year, I discovered Colleen Hoover, my first book I read from her was All Your Perfects and LOVED IT, I have been trying to catch up with every single book written by her. When she gave us the news about this book, pre-ordering was definitely the next step (still is). However, when I was approved by NetGalley to read a Regretting You eARC, I freaked out so much that I scared my mom. Truth to be told, I do not read ebooks at all, I am more of a physical copy person but I just dove right in... it’s a Colleen Hoover book!!

This book was a roller coaster for me, full of emotions. It has made me angry, talking to myself like “I know right?” or “All men are equal.” I have laughed like crazy but the next minute I had to stop reading because I was about to cry, well, I did cry. Regretting You is incredible, well written; it is easy to read but eloquent. I have to admit this book had me questioning my own mind if I really want it to read it because even though my first books, I read were YA, I was not into that genre anymore, well at least not at this moment of my life. But it is Colleen and if I was able to read Verity when my one and only genre is romance, I think I could do this and I did it! I loved seeing me guessing what was going to happen on the next chapter, enjoyed realizing I was reading while walking on my way home.

Please, don’t waste any more time thinking if you should give it a chance; pre-order this book, buy it, read it and enjoy it. Just keep in mind, you will cry because it’s a book about a mother-daughter relationship. I think my favorite character is Miller, how sweet he was with Clara…. I definitely want a Miller in my life. Oh Miller’s gramps!, oh my God! He’s the funniest of all of them, it made me miss my grandpa but I totally enjoyed him when he tried to tell his stories (you will find out, lol)

THIS book!!! The writing was flawless! I found myself alternating between reading super fast to see what would happen next, and reminding myself to slow down and take my time! Still, I had this sense of doom waiting for the climax to hit! Such a heart wrenching story, with real and flawed characters, I mean I felt EVERYTHING they were going through, which is a credit to Colleen’s story telling ability! Amongst all that sadness, there were funny moments and touching scenes. It’s one of those stories, like a real poignant movie, that sticks with you, and will stay with you even after finishing!

Thank you for the ecopy Montlake Romance & Net Galley!!

I'm not sure what I can say about Colleen Hoover that hasn't been said before. She is one of a handful of authors that I trust wholeheartedly to provide an engaging, emotional story that will tug at my heartstrings in all the right ways and characters that are complex yet relatable.

I prefer to go into books blind. I don't read blurbs, I avoid any chapter previews or sneak peaks that are released ahead of time. Really the only thing I knew going into this book was that it was going to be about a mother and her teenage daughter and was kind of a YA/contemporary romance hybrid and I would advise anyone else thinking of picking this one up to go into it blindly as well. Not knowing the events of this story just made it pack that much more of a punch. And there are quite a few punches here.

Colleen portrayed the mother/daughter relationship in this book so well and realistically that I could easily place myself into either characters' shoes. She made me feel what it was like to be a teenage girl again; angry and rebellious yet so giddy about the prospect of new love. At the same time, I could see myself as Morgan, being in her 30s and feeling like she's lost her way a bit. I felt every emotion as the characters were experiencing them, from heartbreak to anger to hope. This is really a beautiful story and I highly recommend it.

Thank you to Montlake Romance and NetGalley for providing this ARC for review.

*Possible spoilers*

Regretting you is the story of Morgan a mother who got pregnant very young with her high school boyfriend. And her daughter Clara (now 17).

In high school Morgan and her sister Jenny were daring best friends Chris and Jonah.

Jonah leaves town for 17 years now only took come back after a one night stand with Jenny gets her pregnant.

A tragic accident claims Jenny and Chris who where in the vehicle together. But why were they together?

This tragic love filled story is about the grief this mother daughter duo goes through. The love, life lessons of a teen and adult.

I adore anything Colleen Hoover writes. She is my number one auto buy author. She just has a way of keeping her readers hooked right from the beginning, throwing some crazy twists at us and making us fall in love with her characters.

This book was a little calmer than a lot of her recent books, less twists and heartbreaking emotion. I loved the story but personally had a hard time with Clara’s actions and attitude toward her mom and the way her mom Morgan handled it.

It was a really good read I will definitely be ordering a signed copy from Colleens site! And will be recommending it to friends. A huge huge thank you to Colleen and Netgalley for allowing me to read Regretting you and review it.

Wow! This book was awesome. From the moment I started reading I was hooked and couldn’t put it down. Colleen has a way with words and can tell a story magnificently. I have read all her books and this one is definitely one of my top ones.

This story is quite an emotional read. Oh, you won't be bawling your eyes out (well, maybe just a little bit here and there,) but there is a lot turmoil for the characters. It is a more subdued read. If you are looking for a light pick me up, this is not the book for you. There are some lighter and humorous scenes to keep it from getting too heavy, but the overall feel of the book is a little on the melancholy side. It's a very heartbreaking story too, as well as it is a story of surviving. When your life, and everything you thought you knew is turned upside down, how is one to survive and move on? A mother and daughter must figure out what is the truth and what has been an illusion. Not only are the two trying to survive the tragedy, but they have to figure out who they are... after. There is a romance too, and you will meet some sweet guys who help the girls on their journey. There are some shocking twists throughout the book. You'll feel empathy for the characters even when do things that may not be all that wise. You'll probably like them even more for those 'bad decisions.' It's a well told story that will be hard to put down. You'll look forward to seeing how things play out and if they will get their happy ending after all the heart ache and tragedy. I'd consider this to be a part YA novel and half Women's Lit. Since there is the daughters story and the mothers, it kinda mixes the two together. There is a very small amount of sexual content, but it is not all that graphic. (Just enough so you know what's going on.)

*I received an ARC of this book from Netgalley.

Regretting you was a very emotional roller coaster of a ride following a mother/daughter relationship. There are some serious up and hardcore downs. It was gut wrenching and completely heart warming. It has made me look back and reevaluate my own relationship with my 13 yr old daughter. This book reminds you that communication, following your hearts dreams and chasing what makes you happy is so incredibly important! A solid 4 star rating from me! A Colleen Hoover worthy read!

I will start by saying that the last chapter of this book contains the most romantic moments of a novel I’ve ever read. And I’ve read a lot - stories that have included such elaborate romantic gestures that you often think you’ve read everything romance has to offer. Then bam! Colleen pulls this sequence out of the bag, something so simple yet so beautiful it makes you think “Bloody Nora! Where did I go wrong?”

I’m a big Colleen Hoover fan and this book definitely hasn’t changed that. The main twist is early on but that doesn’t stop you being gripped to the end to see how everything pans out. It’s dramatic, romantic, sad, funny and sweet in equal measure. No matter what genre she writes, Colleen always writes a great book but I believe that romance is her forte.

My only gripe with this book, and it’s a pretty big one, is that there’s barely any character description. I know one guy has dark hair and another grows a beard temporarily but other than that I literally don’t know what anyone looks like! And I know we never really know what characters look like, we all use the ingredients we’re provided with and come up with a different recipe. Each character looks different in each reader’s head, like a strange mash up of Ready Steady Cook meets Guess Who. But with Regretting You, I really just had shapeless, faceless beings floating round my mind and it sadly distracted me from the story a little. One of my favourite things is to guess who would play who in a movie adaptation and I wouldn’t know where to start with this.

Overall though, it’s a marvellous story of love, loss, family and relationships. It doesn’t have the shock factor of some of Colleen’s previous works but that doesn’t stop it being a one-sitter, can’t possibly put or down, just one more chapter even though I have to up for work in 4 hours kinda book.

I’m giving it 5* regardless, just because of that most excellent romantic moment in the final chapter. I’m not sure anything I read from here on will top it. Don’t cheat and skip ahead though, you’ll ruin the moment!

I don't know how Colleen consistently releases amazing book after amazing book but she's done it again. I loved every single minute of this book. It ripped my heart out and sewed it back together so perfectly that I can't wait to reread it and do it all over again. As per usual with Colleen's books, go into it blind and you'll love it even more but definitely READ THIS BOOK!!

4.5/ 5 stars

Regretting You was my most anticipated read of the year. There are very few books that I would drop everything to read. But Colleen Hoover is one of my absolute favorite authors. So I was beyond excited to read this new book.

Regretting You is sort of a combination between Women's Fiction, Contemporary Romance and Young Adult fiction.

I have read every book that Colleen Hoover has written. And I have loved them all. Regretting You is definitely a bit different from most of her other books. Instead of a male and female POV, we have a dual POV of a mother and daughter. This made it very interesting. Because we get the story from both points of view. But we also see each of their romantic relationships.

I am very happy that I did not read the book blurb for this book. All I knew going in was that there was a mother and a daughter. Sorry, but there is a huge spoiler in the book blurb. This is a huge pet peeve of mine. I realize that it is hard to give enough detail to make the book sound interesting vs giving away too much. But in this book something happens that is so shocking. You need to experience it for yourself. Trust me on this!

The narrators are Morgan (34) and her daughter Clara (16-17). Clara is a high school student who wants to be an actress. Morgan is a stay-at-home mom.

The book starts with a chapter from 17 years before. This chapter definitely set up the rest of the book. So I can understand why the author decided to give us this glimpse into the past.

The main adult characters in this book are Morgan, Chris, Jonah and Jenny. The main teenage characters in this book are Clara, Lexie and Miller. The story is set in a small East Texas town.

At around the 20% point what the book was about really came into play. The book took a massive turn. I was in complete shock. This part of the book was so well done.

This book was about family. But it also really focuses on the mother and daughter dynamic. The book deals with misunderstandings, lies, betrayals, and secrets.

I really enjoyed the dual pov. It was interesting to get two female povs. And to get the story from two generations. We have one story about their family. But we have two perspectives, two romances.

I could not put this book down. I did not want to stop reading. But all I could think about was how would the story end? The last chapter was very strong. But it was missing one crucial thing for me.
(view spoiler)

Overall, there was a lot to like about Regretting You. The book did make me feel. But maybe not as much as some of the author's previous books. The story does look at some serious issues. And I liked that. I think that my favorite thing was how the author took some things that I wasn't expecting from the beginning and middle of the story and tied them into the end. She is absolutely brilliant at doing this. I think that I would have liked an epilogue to see what happened a bit in the future. But it was a good book!
