This book was a brilliant read and one that is perfect to escape for a few hours and loose yourself.
Characters that fall out of the pages of the book and make you fell apart of the story, the setting is lovely and captured well with words.
A great read. that I would highly recommend.

I haven't read the previous books in this saga so something was always missing. An interesting story nonetheless of the effects of war on family dynamics

How i love a good saga! Although i haven't read the first two books in this trilogy, it didn't really matter. I really enjoyed 'The Soldier's Return' and shall be reading the first two books sooner or later. Loved the cover!

My thanks to Netgalley and the Publishers for my copy. This is my honest review, which i have voluntarily given.

The Soldier's Return by Rosie Meddon is a charming story that takes place in England during the Great War, World War I. It revolves mainly around Kate Channer and her two half-siblings, Naomi (Colburne) and Ned (Lt Edwin Russell), a RAF pilot. Kate's husband, Luke, and Naomi's husband, Lawrence, are both in France and Ned, who crashed his plane, starts in the hospital and the, joins the woman at their London home and, later, at their country estate, for recuperation. This story is an amazing portrayal of life during the war, for a certain class of people. It contains death, disfigurement, and PTSD (then known as shell shock). It also portrays change in all its glory: emotional, physical, and logistical.

It was difficult to become engaged with this book, but once I did, I was all in. Heddon did a nice job of portraying the buttoned up emotions of the English, as well as living with war, which was particularly poignant in England, as everyone was dealing with it. It was a new time for air warcraft and bombings could be miles off target, which didn't stop the terror in London and certainly didn't stop crashes and the rush of new technology. I enjoy historical fiction and love this particular era as it was such a time of change for people, women especially, in England. This change was preeminent in Meddon's book. I recommend it.

I received a free ARC of The Soldier's Return from Netgalley. All opinions and interpretations contained herein are solely my own. #netgalley #thesoldiersreturn

I hadn’t read the previous books in this series and I had to read between the lines for some of the relationships. However, this seemed to be an accurate portrayal of the effect of the Great War on families at home and the effect on the men taking part in the battles. Whether, it was being injured and the treatment available or the mental stress and the difference it made if money and connections were available. Kate Channer did seem put upon by her half sister Naomi and yet they were there for each other, when needed. This story takes place in London and Devon. I received a copy and have voluntarily reviewed it. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

The characters are likeable and described in great detail.
The story flows well and the pace is good. A great book.

I’ve read this series as I wanted a book that took me back to the world of Downton Abbey. It’s a similar story in many ways about maids and working life for women and later on, when the house is requisitioned, shows how the house and dynamics changes.

I do like a saga now and again. The covers might be tame and cosy but the subjects within aren’t! I’ve taken ages to read this series as it’s one to read at night when you want some characters to get to know slowly and it’s definately a series to read from book one. The story continues and this one needs the backstory to be fully appreciated.

We all envy people living in these grand homes but rarely stop to think how war really did level the playing field. Girls with dreams of escaping, boys with dreams of returning home. How people survived the nightmare of not knowing if their loved ones were returning home.

A good saga to while away the cold nights.

A lovely story about a family and their relationships through the trials and tribulations of WW1. Takes place in London and Devon where they have houses but also describes volunteering work the ladies do and the healthcare facilities available for the servicemen.
Enlightening and entertaining
