‘Well written’ but poorly plotted.

The Wives by Tarryn Fisher was supposed to be a thrill ride about three women that share the same husband but what I read was a lacklustre romp into the genre.

Love, deception and unrealistic characters combine in this easily digestible but ultimately forgettable thriller. Our protagonist Thursday led a predictable plot brimming with misogyny and clichés. This book was also a poor attempt at writing a mentally unstable character.

I said well written at the beginning of this review. What I mean by this is that I read this book in a day and at no point did I feel like it dragged or was poorly paced. But overall although I liked the premise I wouldn’t recommend this book.

Trigger Warnings: Miscarriage, Domestic Abuse, Misogyny, Attempted Suicide, Stalking, Peodophilia, Molesting.

The narrator is wife number two. She loves her husband and is ok to have him one day a week - she's Thursday. But things start to go wrong and her perception of what's going on can't be trusted. Twisty and fairly engrossing but i'm not sure it ultimately delivered

Wow!! This book is so much more than I expected it would be. So cleverly written, I was constantly second guessing myself! First time I’ve read anything by this author but I’ll certainly be looking for more of her work! Absolutely fantastic read that had me utterly gripped from start to finish!

Wow, twists by the page. Not what I expected at all but definitely kept me enthralled and rivited. A compelling and believable story. Disturbing and challenging your perception of different lifestyles. Once you pick it up you won't be able to put it down.

"My husband has two other wives."

The Wives is a gripping, nail-bitting thriller that's hard to put down. I found the premise of a polygamist marriage to be an original and intriguing one. Thursday is married to Seth but shares him with two other women, Monday and Tuesday. Thursday gets to see Seth only once a week and does not know the identity of Seth's other wives. Then one day she comes across Monday's real name and decides to give her a visit and befriend her. Does Monday know about Thursday or is Seth pretending Thursday is not his wife? And how does Seth's first wife fits in?

I read the Wives in a single day, eager to understand what was going on behind this unusual marriage arrangement.

"Can't a man be happy to come home to just one girl?"

I was totally absorbed in the first two thirds of the book, anxiously looking for answers with Thursday. When the twists started coming in, I found them a bit too much and my interest faded, but I still needed to know how the story ended.

3.5 stars overall

Many thanks to HQ for my review copy in exchange for an honest review.

Imagine that your husband has two other wives.
You've never met the other wives. None of you know each other, and because of this unconventional arrangement, you can see your husband only one day a week. But you love him so much you don't care. Or at least that's what you've told yourself.

This book is a psychological thriller which is very clever and unpredictable. This book is filled with twists and turns. It is dark in places. I wasn’t expecting the ending. It kept me on the edge of my seat. The authors writing style is outstanding but my only negative comment would be that the language used is crude at times which some readers may not like.

An exciting suspenseful read. I highly recommend this book.

What a brilliant book and how true we dont really know a person as much as we think we do. Keeps you in suspense which just makes you read another chapter to see what the next big reveal is

Thursday keeps telling herself that she's happy in her marriage despite its...uniqueness. Her husband has 2 other wives who he shares his time with but about whom Thursday is not allowed to query him.
But one day, her curiosity gets the better of her, and she decides to seek out the other women and by doing so sets off an avalanche of events that she could never have expected.

I found this story instantly captivating. The idea behind it was very original.
It had me hooked from literally the very first page, and this is not something that happens that often.
But after some time, what started as a uniquely compelling story, turned into a typical domestic thriller with a very predictable conclusion. On the plus side, the story was intriguing enough for me to keep reading to find out in what direction the unfolding events would go. I admit I was hoping for an unexpected twist at the very last moment, but sadly it didn't happen.
Still, it was a very enjoyable read.
My initial thought, when I started reading, was to rate it 5 stars, but as I read along, it dropped to 4. Having finished, I'm torn between 3 and 4, but since the story had great potential and started off very arrestingly, I'm settling on 4 stars and the intention to reach for other books from this author.

I was hooked from the very first page and didn't put this down until I was finished hours later! I was intrigued right from the start and instantly found myself desperate to know how Thursday and the other wives had found themselves in this situation and why they were all okay with it. When Thursday started to dig deep and uncover the other two wives, the story really got going and I couldn't believe where it took me. The second half completely shocked me and from there I didn't know what to believe. The Wives has a touch of Gone Girl about it and I'd love to see it play out on screen one day.

A clever story and a real page-turner, but I felt that all the characters were a bit two-dimensional. Thursday in particular was a very unsympathetic character, so it was hard to become truly involved in her story. I would read other books by this author though.

What a fabulous read. Tarryn Fisher has written an amazing book that kept me gripped to the very end. I found myself re reading the last chapters again and again just to absorb the story. She has created an absolutely creative plot. A very quick read. Highly recommended to all that love a story with suspense and twists.
Thursday is Thursday!
Married to Seth she is his Thursday wife. Along with Monday and Wednesday. Seth is in a polygamous marriage. Thursday only knows the other wives by their nicknames. Then one day she discovers something that leads her to identify one of them. She gets to meet Hannah and discovers her covered in bruises. It would seem her handsome loving husband may have a different life with the others. Does she really know Seth at all! Is everything as it seems.
Lots of little clues thrown into the book. However, you only realise them once you've got to the end of the book..
This book actually deserves 10 stars.

Interesting read. I was a bit open mouthed and had to sit and try and digest it all. It was good but there were parts I wasn’t to keen on, but on the whole was a good thriller to keep you on the edge of your seat

Wow 3 wives first of all why. All kept separate but what happens when this separation changes. I feel so emotional reading this book and following the wives and Seth. I am completely gripped. What will happened of they met.

have just finished this book and I’m not sure how I feel! I think it almost took the genre “psychological thriller” to the next level, in the sense that I’m still not entirely sure what happened in the plot 😂 I really liked the author’s writing style and actually felt it had all the potential to be almost a Gone Girl level of thriller, it just never quite materialised in the way I wanted to. I found the plot a bit over complicated and confusing, but I could see what the author was trying to do!

What an absolute mind melt of a book, Tarryn is the queen of just throwing everything you are thinking out the window and then some !

I love how her writing can easily captivate you and the story grew, it’s a great read, it’s not romance it’s a book that needs to be read

For me it didn’t really click with me until the 2nd half, then I wanted to know more, I was thirsty for this pay of the story and the clever play with the winds and the mind melting ! I wanted more and then it ended !

Gah !

3.5/4 stars

This book is about a woman who is the second wife of a polygamist. As multiple marriages are illegal, her husband Seth has legally divorced his first wife but remained in a relationship with her and has also gained a third (though not legal) wife. The woman telling this story isn't allowed to know the details or even names of the other wives but she becomes curious and tracks them down. She discovers some bruises on Wife number 1 and starts to grow suspicious of whether their husband is responsible. It's a really great idea for a thriller but I didn't love the execution. The story is quite twisty but you can see most of them coming and it feels quite rushed by the end.

What an amazing read. I have never read any of Tarryn Fisher's books before but I will certainly read more after having read The Wives. Them story follows Thursday as she copes with life being married to a polygamist. Seth also has wives Monday and Tuesday.Tuesday is Seth's first wife, Thursday is his second wife and Monday is his latest wife. All three wives know of each other's existence but never have any contact..
Thursday appears to be happy with her lot and accepting of the situation until her curiosity is raised when she finds a doctor's receipt.
Thursday starts to try and trace the other wives and so begins her descent and ultimately her unravelling. From this point onward the story becomes extremely dark and twisted.
A real page turner that you won't to put down.

When i started reading this book, i was not sure whether or not I would enjoy the story of three women fighting and being married to one man. However as the story unfolded it revealed hidden depths.

There are many twists and turns, a true suspense thriller with a shocking ending. Loved it!

I got hooked into this book immediately - it's a great idea for a story. However it read like a good first draft. I think it needed a stronger edit and I was surprised that it wasn't a debut novel. It's a shame about the execution because it had all the ingredients for a satisfyingly fast read.
