I received a free ARC copy of this via NetGalley and the publishers Canelo, in return for an unbiased review. Apologies for this taking so long - I had mistaken it for a purchased book on my Kindle iPad app (I’ve now set up a system to avoid this happening again), and then I couldn’t find the copy on my Kindle device. All solved now though - and this was a very good opening book for a debut writer. A good and twisty plot with a few curveballs, and decent characters (though I’d like more of them to become more fleshed out in later books). This was a very good starting point for a series. There was something about the writing which did flag it as debut book by a debut writer to me, I admit - not sure quite how to explain it, but sometimes it felt a little too eager/trying too hard, or maybe a little too stilted in the writing? I don’t know how to explain it, but I wasn’t surprised to see it was a first book. I’m sure this would become more fluid, settled and polished with subsequent books though, as Todd finds her feet. That set aside, and wanting the other characters to become more detailed, this was a very good book and I’d happily read the others which follow!

I really enjoyed this fast paced, cleverly plotted thriller.

I was hooked from the start and could not put this rollercoaster of a book down. Well paced with lots of twists and turns along the way which I didn't see coming, well written characters and a very satisfying ending.

Fabulous, highly recommended - I can't wait to read more in this series.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review

Great intro to a new series.
Clare leaves her position after a tragic misunderstanding. After being declared not at fault, Clare takes a position in St. Andrews, a small community.
Things are going smooth until Andy Robb is hit by a car. The driver gets out to ensure he is dead, then reverses over him. This absolutely drew my attention- what could he have done that was so horrible someone would drive over him twice?
The killer left a notecard - the number 5.
Then there is a number 4.
While Clare races to find a lead, the Richtie family files for an investigation questioning Clare's innocene.
I enjoyed this plot - suspense, twists. I felt the method of murder was warranted.
Again, great start to a new series.

This was a captivating thriller that had so many twists and turns. The characters were very believable and it was fascinating to see how a murder investigation is carried out even when your DCI doesn't believe you are up to the job! The subject was very well researched and very sensitively handled and that showed in the writing

A great read. Would thoroughly recommend

Detective Clare Mackay #1

DI Clare Mackay as recently transfer from Glasgow to St. Andrews. A man has been murdered at a hotel during a wedding reception. He had been knocked down by a hit and run driver and a card with the number 5 had been left beside him. This is the first in a series of killings and cards re left beside each victim. Clare and her team are under pressure to solve these murders.

This is a gripping and fast paced police procedural. Clare comes with a backstory ut I will leave you to find out what it is when you read the book. The characters are well rounded and believable. Set in St. Andrews but we do visit some other beautiful Scottish locations. It full of twist, turns and surprises. A very promising start to a new police procedural series. I'm looking forward to reading what the next book has to offer.

I would like to thank NetGalley, Canelo and the author Marion Todd for my ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Thank you NetGalley and Canelo for the eARC.
The first in the DI Claire McKay is a great procedural mystery set in St. Andrews of golfing fame. She's moved from Glasgow after a disastrous event there.
Her first case is of a man deliberately hit and killed by a car during a wedding party. Soon there are two more men mown down, and the team know there are at least a couple more in danger of the same fate occurring.
I very much liked Claire and her backstory, she's a hard-working and plucky woman who's overcoming a tough time in Glasgow. It also helped that she's a dog lover who meets Benny, the sweet canine who's mixed up in the drama and takes care of him when he's homeless.
St. Andrews is another character I really enjoyed, it sounds wonderful. The pace of the story is fast, the writing is excellent and all the characters are well fleshed. The ending was one of those that make you go OMG, I didn't see that coming. Great stuff!
Can't wait to read no. 2 in the series, I have a feeling it's going to be one of those series that make you wish the author will write quickly so you don't have to wait long for the next one. Great Tartan Noir, highly recommended!

Having missed reading this before publication, I am looking forward to the book having just read and enjoyed the second book in the Detective Clare Mackay series 'In Plain Sight'.

Now, with the benefit of hindsight, I would recommend reading these books in order. They each stand out well on their own merit. However as with most series of books featuring a particular detective, it is enjoyable to see how the author develops the characters.

It is difficult to avoid spoiling the story when discussing why there have been more than one hit and run killings, suffice to say that there are some disturbing themes running through this novel.

Marion Todd handles them well, without unnecessary tasteless details. The book has plenty of twists and turns before we finally learn who is to blame.

I think that the police procedural aspects of this novel are well written. In all, I really liked this book and will look forward to future novels by Marion Todd.

Once again I give my thanks to Netgalley and Canelo for copy of this book in exchange for this review.

I really enjoyed See Them Run from start to finish. First, the main character Clare MacKay has just enough of a past to be intriguing - yet you can see already that St. Andrews will be her new home. The main plot was extremely interesting all the way through with a completely satisfying ending. And the addition of Benjy certainly didn't hurt - I've never met a DI I didn't like who had a dog.

A gripping thriller, with vivid characters and a excellent who-dunnit plot. There are points that make for difficult reading, but they are handled with care - and highlight an issue which is still prevalent.

All in all, an excellent read.

DI Clare Mackay has transferred for St Andrews after an incident in Glasgow. Leaving her old job, family, friends and home she starts fresh with a new team. A serial killer is killing men in a horrid way and the team need to find out who and why before anyone else is killed.

This was a strong start to a new series and I really enjoyed reading Crime not set in Glasgow or Edinburgh for a change.

Thank you to netgalley and the publishers for this arc in exchange for my honest review.

See Them Run Marion Todd

A new author and the start of a new series.

After years of mainly American Crime books on the shelves in bookshops and supermarkets there has been a resurgence of good British Crime over the Last few years. Series by people such as Angela Marsons, Graham Smith, Carol Wyer are best sellers, and are flying of the physical and e-shelves.

Marion Todd is going to be right at home with this crowd.

This book introduces us to DI Clare Mackay, who is working out of a Police Station in the golfing and tourist town of St Andrews. It’s a bit quieter than her old posting in Glasgow, as part of the Armed Response Team, but she’s settling in nicely.

Called out to an early morning hit-and-run should be a tragic, but routine incident, until it’s found that the man was hit by a car which then reversed back over him to finish the job.

During the scene examination a card with the number 4 written on it.

The next day the same again, this time with a card with the number 3.

There’s obviously a killer out there working their way through a list with at least two other victims out there, but how does Mackay and her small team identify them. First, they have to find the thing that links the first two victims, and they couldn’t be two more different people.

As the new-comer from the “Big City” Mackay is watched closely by her boss to see if she’s up to carrying out this high profile investigation, whilst at the same time having the full backing of her team.

Mackay has another thing niggling at her mind throughout the investigation. As a Fire Arms Officer she had shot and killed a man. Although it was cleared, by the Police, as a justifiable act the family of the man are looking to take out a private prosecution.

This is where Marion Todd has me hooked with her main character. The effect, on a Police Officer after they have been involved in a shooting, is often brushed over. The macho “it’s part of the job” attitude employed, by both sexes, is not real. Todd has done a really good job of looking at the effect it has on an Mackay.

I’m hoping this is going to be the beginning of a really good series, it’s definitely got off to a cracking start.

This is a tightly written who-dun-it that had me guessing along with the investigative team. The story moves quickly and with good pacing. All the characters are engaging and realistic. This is my first book by this author and I am looking forward to reading more about DI Clare and her team.

I really enjoyed this first in a new series. Clare, the protagonist, has left her last job behind after an incident at work. She is coming into a new station feeling like she needs to prove herself. she immediately gets involved in a hit and run case that turns into a serial killer case. She battles a bit with her DCI along the way. This was an enjoyable read and I look forward to the next in the series.

Wow, what a read! Absolutely fantastic start to a new police procedural series. I loved everything about it. DI Clare Mackay is a great character with lots of potential. It’s lovely to see Fife being used as the setting. I am really looking forward to reading the next book in the series.

This one is a detective novel about chasing a serial killer who run the victim over at midnight. I think this is going to be a series. The book is pretty good for the first series, enough for us to crave some more detective story from our main character, Clare. The plot is interesting, with the thickening thrill in its chapter. I like the way this book focusing in how detective and police department works, what is their procedure and what is inside the closed door office. I kind of like the environment Clare working on and it makes the book enjoyable. Not to mention the peaceful St Andrews!

Only the ending that still made me a bit dissapointed. It was a downhill for all the thrill which built up, because it's just predictable.

Thank you Netgalley and Canelo Publishing Company for the advanced copy.

'See Them Run' is the first book in the Detective Clare Mackay series and I have to say I was completely and thoroughly hooked right from the start. One thing that I love doing is discovering new authors. Marion Todd certainly falls into that category and after having thoroughly enjoyed reading 'See Them Run', I will most definitely be reading more of this new author's sterling work in the future.

DI Clare Mackay has recently moved from Glasgow to join the St Andrews police force as the most senior officer stationed there, after a shooting incident in Glasgow left her with emotional and professional problems. She's left behind her home, her job, and her boyfriend to take up the job in the small seaside town.

Having established a rapport with her new team, Clare is quickly called upon to investigate a suspicious hit-and-run in the driveway of a hotel where a wedding celebration is underway. The victim has been crushed, having been run over not once, but twice. A white card bearing the number 5 has been placed on the victim’s chest. When a second victim is found the following night displaying the number 4, Clare suspects a serial killer is at large, stalking the streets of the picturesque Scottish town, intent on carrying out three more murders.

She and her partner-in-crime, DS Chris West, along with the rest of the team, track down every lead in this excellent police procedural. Clare is smart and very determined to solve the case, fully aware that the clock is ticking and, as if that wasn't enough, she has to face pressure from her new DCI to continue her investigation. Will the murderer(s) strike again? Will Clare be able to stop the increasing body count?

After an introductory description of the first victim’s experience, the narrative resolutely remains with Clare's point of view. I fell right into this well-crafted and absorbing tale and I felt as though I was shadowing her as she worked at chasing her leads and following her instincts. I adored the story-lines which were easy to follow and Marion Todd's writing-style was impressive and note-worthy.
I considered several 'who' scenarios but found I was completely off the mark until the final chapters.

Also, I think that the author merely scratched the surface with Clare's portrayal. I was extremely taken with this character's toughness, dedication and tenacity and look forward to reading about her in future instalments of this series. With its polished pacing and plotting, I found this to be a thoroughly enjoyable, original and difficult to put down novel from Marion Todd. Evidently she is a gifted storyteller who can provide readers with thrills, sophistication and a story packed with substance. A very highly recommended five star read and an exciting story that will be of interest to many readers.

I received a complimentary digital copy of this novel, at my request, from Canelo via NetGalley and this review is my own unbiased opinion.
