Well written police procedural set in a unique location. This could well be the start of an intriguing new series |

A new series from Marion Todd and I loved it. Set in St Andrews we have our DI Clare Mckay and her team along with DS Chris West. They are investigating a series of murders by hit and run. It appears the men being run over and left for dead have something in common. This is a brilliant police procedural novel and Clare is really up against it when a DCI is appointed to oversee the investigation and they clash. Clare also has her personal problems having left a recent relationship. The story is a great one and for me, it was unputdownable!! A must read. |
As a fan of police procedurals, I was excited to discover a new series to sink my teeth into. SEE THEM RUN is the first in a new series by Marion Todd, featuring DI Clare McKay, and set in the Scottish seaside town of St Andrews. After shooting dead a 15 year old boy who was brandishing what turned out to be a toy gun in an armed robbery, Clare McKay left the grit of Glasgow behind and transferred to the picturesque St Andrews, more famous for its golf course and historic university than crime. Having established a rapport with her new team, Clare was quickly thrown into a suspicious hit and run in the drive of a hotel where a wedding reception is underway. The victim was crushed, having been run over not once but twice. A white card with the number 5 is found on the body. When a second victim is found with the number 4, Clare suspects a serial killer is in their midst. With this knowledge, and her rank only being a DI, Clare and her team know that a DCI will be tasked to oversee the investigation and soon enough DCI Alistair Gibson arrives from Edinburgh to assist. But it seems Clare's reputation precedes her. That is, her involvement in the shooting in Glasgow as an Armed Response Officer, and it seems he doubts her ability to lead the inquiry into these suspicious deaths, questioning both her fitness and her treatment of the second victim's wife who turns out to be a personal friend of his. But Clare is methodical and determined to solved this case, as she looks to settle and made a home for herself in this town. It soon becomes clear someone is targeting these men when an attack on a third man is witness by a dog walker, resulting in the victim being found alive and rushed to hospital. A rain sodden white card with the number 3 was found at the scene, along with the green paint of the vehicle involved. The witness was able to provide a general description of the vehicle as being an old style Land Rover, a partial registration and with the surprising supposition that the driver was a woman. Clare and her partner, DS Chris West, delve into the lives of each of the victims and catch a lucky break in the home of the third victim, Nat Dryden. His laptop was open, no password protection and no security installed, with an address to somewhere on the dark net called the "Playroom". Analyses of the first two victims - Andy Robb and Bruce Gilmartin - link all three men to TOR, an internet browser that guarantees anonymity by hiding and deleting your internet history. That in itself is nothing...but it's what they find on Nat's laptop that leads them to believe that something far more disturbing is at play. The first victim, Andy Robb, it seems, couldn't keep it in his pants and was out at his club on Thursday nights, withdrawing £100 each week. The second victim, Bruce Gilmartin, was the CEO of a well-established brewery in St Andrews and Thursday nights was spent at one of his many charities. But Clare and her team could not find which one he bestowed upon each week. And then it seemed that the third victim, Nat Dryden, also had a mysterious committment every Thursday. So just what was it about Thursdays that linked these men? Of course it doesn't help that DCI Gibson is close friends with the Gilmartins and warns Clare off upsetting Mrs Gilmartin any further. But Clare is fairly sure the wife knows a little more than she is letting on, despite being in Amsterdam when her husband was killed. The clock is ticking for Clare and her team, knowing the killer is on some kind of countdown which will inevitably end with Number 1. Under pressure from her DCI, Clare must quickly identify the remaining victims but in doing so takes her on an unsettling journey within the dark net. Unlike many other crime fiction stories, SEE THEM RUN is wholly a police procedural where you see the investigation unravel from the viewpoint of the police. The only insight into the victims' lives and any suspects is again from the police perspective. I'm not sure yet if that is preferable or not - in my own opinion - though it still made for compelling reading. I enjoyed Clare's camaraderie she had with her team, with the exception of DCI Gibson, however even he was won over in the end. I look forward to getting to know Clare and DS West a bit more in future books, and this was an interesting introduction to them. It is obvious that Clare is feeling her way after the debacle in Glasgow and although she is still somewhat unsettled and lonely - particularly with the threat of the criminal suit by the boy's family - I hope that will soon be remedied by her putting down roots in purchasing the cottage that took her eye and the warm addition of Benjy. Who is Benjy? Read the book to find out! I'm in love with him already and hope to see more of him (with no harm coming to him of course) both in Clare's life and in future books. I am thrilled to see the new onslaught of British crime fiction being set in Scotland now, and this one is a great addition. It is a refreshing change being set in picturesque St Andrews, as opposed to gritty Glasgow, Aberbeen and Edinburgh. If you love detective fiction and police procedurals...particularly British crime fiction, you will love SEE THEM RUN and this new series featuring DI Clare McKay. I would like to thank #MarionTodd, #NetGalley and #Canelo for an ARC of #SeeThemRun in exchange for an honest review. |

I have a soft spot for crime series so this was right up my street. I read so many that are set in Glasgow that it was a nice change to have St Andrews as the location. DI Clare Mackay is a good central character and this book does a great job of setting up a few possibilities for where her life might go in future books. There is scope to flesh out the rest of her team in terms of their personal life but as an introduction to the team this works ok. This was a bit of a page turner and managed to surprise me when I thought I had it all worked out. I’ve seen the blurb for book 2 and it looks like it will be hard to resist. |

A really solid, interesting police who-dun-it procedural with a female detective arriving in a remote Scottish town after leaving Glasgow with an investigation hanging over her. Fast paced, lots of investigative detail that was realistic , and a horrific central mystery. |

Beautiful St. Andrews in Scotland is the setting for this turbulent police enquiry. The pace is fast and one of those books you want to finish in one go. DI Clare McKay is woken in the early hours of a Sunday morning with news of a hit and run at a wedding venue. The victim is the bride's brother, Andy Robb. It soon becomes clear that this is no accident as there are signs that he was run over twice. He also had a card attached to his shirt. The number 5. As they delve into Andy's life another death is reported. The same method and almost the same clue is left. This time a No. 4. is left on the body. At this point DI MaKay and DS Chris West can find only one thing that these men have in common. A Thursday night spent out at a club? A charity? Nobody is sure. As the death toll rises, and one person survives, they are finally closer to the truth. This tests KI McKay and her team to the limit. What transpires is truly shocking. I chose to read this book and all opinions in this review are all my own and completely unbiased. My thanks to NetGalley for this opportunity. |

See them run is one of the best books I have read in a while! This is a first novel by Marion Todd and hopefully the beginning of a great series that I will be sure not to miss.
The subject matter is disturbing to say the least but handled beautifully and with a great deal of sensitivity.
DI Clare Mackay initially responds to a supposedly traffic fatality which is quickly determined to be murder and as there’s a card with the number 5 attached to the victim they fear there’s a serial killer on the loose which bears fruition when another person is found murdered with the number 4 on his body.
The case takes a disturbing turn as a pedophile ring is uncovered and the police takes steps to unmask the men who have systematically abused children and also to stop further killings.

I have to say I enjoyed this debut. This is a detective story based in Scotland, we are introduced to DI Clare Mackay, who has recently moved to the area from Glasgow. She comes with an interesting back story. The scene is set from the first chapter when a man is murdered at a hotel during a wedding reception, he is run over and a card with a number 5 is left. More murders follow and a great plot twist. Good characters, plot and pace will look forward to the next in the series. Thanks to Netgalley for a copy in exchange for an honest review. |
At a wedding in St Andrews, one of the guests receives some suggestive texts. When he goes outside thinking he is going to have a liaison he becomes the victim of a hit & run incident, a card with the number 5 is found on his body. Clare Mackay is new to the area & as SIO on this case. She knows that there is going to be a lot of eyes on her. When another hit & run victim is found, along with a number 4, she & her team realise that they need to solve this quickly as there are likely to be another three prospective victims out there. This was a fast paced police procedural. I always enjoy those set in Scotland where I have some idea of the setting as it makes it more 'real' when you can picture the places. The characters were engaging and I really liked the main character. The plot was an interesting and surprising. I am already looking forward to the next in the series. Thanks to Netgalley & the publisher for letting me read & review this book |
A new police series featuring Detective Inspector Claire Mackay . Claire and her team in St Andrews are hunting a killer who is running men down and leaving a numbered card on their bodies . There seems to be no links between the men. Finally they get a break but can they catch the killer before he/she strikes again. Clare also has personal problems from being stationed in Glasgow which isn’t helping her. Great read Thanks Netgalley |
A fabulously twisted story where you keep wondering if you know what is going on and then something changes again and again. Well worth every moment! |
An absolutely brilliant crime novel. I adored the premise and the direction the story took. I am very impressed by this excellent debut. |

I was given an advance copy of this book by NetGalley and Canelo to read and review and I can truthfully say that I thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Marion Todd is a new writer and her book 'See Them Run' is excellent. I love her gritty Detective Inspector Clare Mackay and the new team she has in St Andrews since moving there from Glasgow. The book starts with a wedding and the brother of the bride receives a text to ask what he's wearing under his kilt and whether or not he is a true Scotsman, he responds to the flirty text and arranges to meet someone at the bottom of the hotel drive, unfortunately for him this is no flirty meeting as he is run over by a Land Rover and is left dead with a card with the number 5 written on it. DI Clare Mackay and her team are called and realise very quickly that this is just the start if the card is anything to go by. |
#1 in a new series featuring DI Clare Mackay. DI Clare Mackay has moved to St Andrews, for a fresh start away from Glasgow. Clare has the investigation, a pending private prosecution relating to events in Glasgow and a messy personal life too. She is investigating a hit and run accident, but the body has a card pinned to them with the number 5…..so was this really an accident? What is the link to the Thursday Club? When another hit and run is found, and the body has the number 4, she realises there must be something to link these incidents…..can she find the person responsible before any more killings? Marion Todd has written a really in depth police procedural which is non stop, with great characters and a clever plot, this really is a tense and gripping thriller. Thank you to The publishers, the author and NetGalley for a free copy of the ebook. This is my honest, unbiased review. |
This is a well plotted, fast paced and action packed mystery that I found gripping and entertaining. The mystery is solid and kept me guessing, the cast of characters is fleshed and I liked the setting. It's the first book I read by this author and won't surely be the last. It's an excellent read, highly recommended! Many thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this ARC, all opinions are mine. |

A tightly plotted page-turner packed with shocks, thrills and surprises, Marion Todd’s See Them Run is a captivating and chilling Scottish set police procedural guaranteed to keep readers on the edge of their seats. DI Clare Mackay has only recently moved to St Andrews from Glasgow and her latest case is her most bizarre investigation yet. On the night of a wedding celebration, a guest is killed in a hit and run and a card bearing the number 5 has been placed on their chest. As Clare begins to dig deeper into this case, she quickly realises that this was not an accident, but what could the card with the number 5 mean? Was the card merely a random ruse thrown on the victim to throw the police off the scent? Or could it possibly mean something far more sinister and frightening? When the following night another victim is struck down and a card with the number 4 is left on their chest, Clare and her team realise that they are looking for a serial killer with unfinished business. Three more murders are planned and Clare needs to find the murderer before more lives are lost and more people die in such tragic and sinister circumstances. But what could possibly link the victims? Why are these people being targeted? And what secrets do they have which has driven somebody to commit murder? There is far more to this case than meets the eye and Clare needs to get to the bottom of this mystery and uncover this tangled web of lies and deceit. But solving this case is going to take Clare down a dark and twisted path that will force her to face her own demons and realise that the clue in solving this case lies in vanquishing the ghosts of her own past – because only then can she discover not just the secrets of the victims – but those of the evil killer intent on causing maximum destruction… Marion Todd certainly knows how to write a spine-tingling thriller that keeps readers turning the pages late into the night and See Them Run is a fantastic read that is dark, twisted and fiendishly enjoyable. Full of twists and turns you will not see coming and jaw-dropping surprises, See Them Run is an excellent crime thriller written in the best-selling tradition of Ann Cleeves and Lin Anderson fans are going to love. Clare McKay is a brilliant heroine and I am so pleased that there will be more titles featuring this brave, intelligent and inspirational detective. A fantastic crime thriller from a name to watch out for, Marion Todd’s See Them Run is a compulsively readable tale fans of the genre will not want to miss. |

An easy read about police procedures in Scotland. With few characters the mystery was easy to solve. Ideal for a light read. |
On the night of a wedding celebration, one guest meets a grisly end when he’s killed in a hit-and-run. A card bearing the number ‘5’ has been placed on the victim’s chest. DI Clare Mackay, who recently moved from Glasgow to join the St Andrews force, leads the investigation. The following night another victim is struck down and a number ‘4’ card is at the scene. Clare and her team realise they’re against the clock to find a killer stalking the streets of the picturesque Scottish town and bent on carrying out three more murders. This is I believe the author’s debut novel & I thoroughly enjoyed it. Well written, fast paced & right up my street for a riveting read. Much of the book is from Clare's point of view & because of this I felt that I got to know her. Twists and turns, good writing, well developed characters all made for a very good read. I certainly look forward to more from the author. My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read |
Wow what stunning debut and cracking read! I can not express enough how much I loved this book. If I had of been reading a physical copy of this book, I would of had a number of paper cuts as I couldn’t race through the pages quick enough! As it was, I kept skipping pages on my kindle in my haste to turn the page and had to slow down which was so hard to do. Marion took my hostage right from the start and did not let me go until the final word! I read this in one sitting as I had to know how it was gong to unfold and I was not disappointed. Not many books keep me up reading all night but there was no chance of me stopping with this one. Marion has created a plot that is both compelling, original and refreshing. Set in the picturesque small sea side town of St Andrews, men of the community are being murdered and interestling a number is being left at the scene of the crime on the murder victim. Starting at 5, at first DI Clare Mackay is at a loss as to what this could mean, but when another body turns up with the calling card of the number 4 left behind, she knows then that these murders are linked and has her work cut out for her in finding out what connects these men before the killer gets to number 1. When revealed it is shocking, heartbreaking and in a turn of events, has you actually feeling sympathy for the killer. I loved the character of DI Clare Mackay. She is a strong woman that is tough but fair and she carries the story on her shoulders well. She is not without flaws but this just adds to her appeal. She is relentless in her approach in catching the killer and she is not one to cower away, when her methods are questioned by senior staff. She takes it on the chin but she has confidence in her instincts to still solve the case no matter what. She has been brought to life through the pages perfectly and I look forward to getting to know her more in future books. Another standout for me was Chris. I loved how he and Clare worked together and I also look forward to more of him in future books. All of the other supporting characters likeable and unlikable are all very well developed and been written extremely well. I connected to Marion’s writing right from the get go. It is eloquent, articulate and very fluent. This story has been extremely well researched in police procedures and written with so much confidence, that I was surprised when I read in Marion’s bio she has no links or background in this type of work. She has done a great job in making you believe this is the case, where some authors are unable to do so as realistically as Marion has done. Through the writing you feel that you are also in the story and the description of St Andrews, brings the town to life beautifully and one I would love to visit one day. I have read some amazing books that are the first in a series this year, but I have to say that See Them Run is the standout for me. It is definitely in my top 5 books of the year with Marion being my breakout author of 2019. I am so looking forward to the second book in the series, In Plain Sight which is definitely one of my most anticipated books for 2020. I am thankful that I have found another extremely talent author to add to my all time favourites. It was an absolute pleasure to be able to read and review See Them Run and I look forward to hopefully many more books in this series. Thank-you to NetGalley, Canelo and Marion Todd for allowing me to read an advance copy of See Them Run which I have reviewed honestly and voluntarily. |
