A lovely story of family coming back together after a long-standing estrangement, with romance, mystery and a bit of shock and sadness along the way . The characters were easy to like/hate and I really enjoyed this book.

Dovetail by Karen McQuestion "Time has a way of evening things out" which sets the premise of the story. A story of dual time periods, 1916 and 1983. The past parallels the present. As the heartbreaking past unfolds, the envy, jealousy and love are dovetailed together into the present leading to an unexpected twist in the end. Pearl is a unique character that has one constantly shaking your head at her antics. Joe and Kathleen are a sweet couple who deserve their own HEA.

Thank you to the publisher, author, and NetGalley for the opportunity to preview the book.

This is a beautifully written love story from the past and parallels into another love story in the present. Tragic love story in the past leads into finding family and forgiveness in the present. Another love story follows the past into the present but ends in happily ever after. 5 stars!

This story has a unique twist. It follows 2-parallel stories that eventually converge into one at the end. It is 1916 and we meet Alice, the oldest of 7 daughters who is managing the household after their mother has passed away. Alice manages this with grace and elegance, never complaining. One summer, John comes to stay with the family to help her father out in the mill. Life will never be the same for the family.
Fast forward to 1983 where we meet Joe Aronson, the grandson of Pearl, Alice’s younger sister. Joe is a troubled young man whom Pearl rescues from
an in-patient treatment facility. While working for Pearl, Joe meets Kathleen, a young woman with her own troubles. The two quickly become friends.
The two stories eventually converge together in an interesting twist at the end.
Thank you to NetGalley for my advanced review copy. All opinions and thoughts are my own.

Just finished this amazing book and have to quell the tears! Such an emotional and wonderful read!
I love the way Karen weaves a tale that intertwines the past and the present like no one else quite can.
I enjoyed how the past effected the future and all the personal stories tied together in the end.
Have a box of tissues handy while reading this – you WILL need them.
A great read from a great author – highly recommend!

Dovetail by Kate McQuestion is a delightful read. I thoroughly enjoyed the two converging stories that took place in 1916 and 1983. As sisters, Pearl was a character you just shake your head at and Alice was one to be admired. I enjoyed the innocence of the relationships that developed in both eras and while you can see the similarities in the two stories and how they are converging, there is still mystery and details you are interested to discover. I would definitely recommend this book for those who like a good love story with some mystery and suspense.

This was such a fun book to read. I loved how it jumped back and forth between 1983 and 1916. I felt like I was in the past as I read about 1916, the author's words painted such a lovely picture. The story was interesting and pulled me along as it unwound. I highly recommend.

Reviewing for Netgalley

I have read books by this author before and have been hooked from the beginning. Dovetail was no different and didn’t disappoint.
At the start of the book I was grabbed by a character called Joe, who was in a residential psychiatric treatment centre having therapy. Joe had been having disturbing dreams which leave him screaming , sweaty and sometimes sleep walking. Joes family had become concerned enough to enlist him to Trendale. Joe went along with them willingly, under the impression it would placate his parents and he could leave anytime.
When the dr informs Joe that being well enough to leave isn’t his decision, Joe begins to try and tell the therapists what he thinks they want to hear.

The pace of the story held me intrigued and I had no idea what was coming next. The author gave titbits away, building up the atmosphere and tension of the book.

I found that as the book went on I didn’t want it to end and I kept feeling like it was about to (it has to eventually right?)

I empathised with and enjoyed Kathleens character. She was distant enough from the drama while still having her own issues.

The story flips from 1916- 1983, using the same families but different generations. This style of writing can be quite difficult to follow but in this book I loved it. Dovetail is very cleverly written, to enable the reader to keep up with the story. Experiencing the emotional journey and what a journey it is. Love, lust, loss, chivalry, spite and murder!

I implore you to give it a go!
Look out for it 10th March 2020

Multiple timelines and unexplained dreams make this a unique book. It is never too late for forgiveness. At the beginning of the book, I was concerned about liking it or not. However, as soon as Joe is bailed out of a psychiatric hospital by the grandmother he thought was dead, the story picked up for me, and I did not want to put the book down. The dreams he has been having start to make sense. I highly recommend this me of a kind book. I received an advanced reader copy of this book from NetGalley. The opinions expressed in this review are my own.

I want to thank Netgalley for giving me an advanced copy of this book. The description sounds like a very nice enjoyable read but I can't confirm that. The copy I received was so messed up, misspelled words, ending of a sentence and the next page has the authors name. I was unable to get a clear idea of how well the story was written but it seems like a very good book.

What a wonderful book. As the first sentence says.... Time has a way of evening things out..... this sets the stage for the whole book. In dual time we follow the wonderful love of Alice and John, and the envious hatred of Pearl and Frank. Alice is the perfect daughter and sister, taking care of her father and sisters. Her sister Pearl is so envious she makes trouble at every turn, encouraging Frank who would love for Alice to be his. Flash ahead to this story of Kathleen and Joe, whose love follows a similar path. Will love prevail? Read this wonderful book and find out.

"What's done is done. You can't unring the bell. I surely would, if given a chance."
A wonderful story with dual timelines, one in 1916 and the other in 1983 with a linking thread that you just will not believe!
Joe has been bailed out of a psychiatric facility by a grandmother he had no idea existed!
Pearl ( Joe's Grandma) needs help to clean her house up and out and who better than her grandson. She wants to know him while she has time and make things right.
There is a reason Joe has been in a facility.
He has reoccurring dreams that cause terrors. Dr's cannot understand what or why these dreams continue to go on and certainly do not like that he is leaving the institution.
Part of this mission that Pearl has given Joe, is to pack up the furniture and items not wanted in her house and deliver them to the second hand shop in town.
The connections to the dreams and 1916 begin here.
This is one amazing novel and although I will admit I was confused in the beginning, keep with it as it all comes together as the chapters progress! I reread some pages again to grasp each new revelation that was discovered.
There are details upon details that truly kept me loving this book!
Excellent journey you will not want to miss!

Dovetail is an amazingly unique book. It’s written in a style I have never encountered. It is a story of beginnings and memories. It is a story of Kathleen finding herself after a life of being controlled by her husband. It is Joe’s full circle journey to escape his terrifying dreams. It is a story of forgiveness and family. It was a very difficult book to put down, and it has stayed with me long after I read the last page. I highly recommend Dovetail! Thank you to NetGalley for an advanced review copy.

This story unfolds in a unique fashion with many surprises along the way. There are two parallel stories, one set in 1983 and the other set in 1916.
In 1983, Joe meets Pearl when she rescues him from an in-patient treatment facility. While working for Pearl, Joe meets Kathleen a local shop owner. From the start the two have an instant, yet unexplainable sense of knowing the other. In 1916 we meet Alice, who as the oldest of seven girls, gracefully manages all the responsibilities of maintaining her household after her mother passes. When John comes to stay with her family one summer everything changes.
I recommend this wonderful novel. I enjoyed how Karen McQuestion carefully weaves these two stories together. The past and present are both filled with complex family dynamics and small town scrutiny. This story explores a variety of themes from jealousy to regret and, of course, love. Highly recommended!
