A really good book, not brilliant as it was unbelievable in parts but a real page turner none the less. |
This book had a really refreshing premise with an interesting story, I thought it was a good new twist on the “cold case” mystery. The story and the ending were satisfying (I didn’t guess who did it before it was revealed); my only gripes would be that the cast of characters was sometimes a little too long to keep track of who was who, and that a lot of the male characters would “stare a little too long and intensely” at the main character - by the second half of the book I was pretty sure most of them had done it and it was getting a little tired. However, I enjoyed this book and thought it was something new and interesting. |
Jessica's mother was murdered 10 years ago by The Magpie Man, a serial killer. Jess has decided to take matters into her own hands to catch him and to do that, Jess signs up to be on a new reality show in the internet where her every move will be watched. Before long Jess receives messages and old articles regarding her mothers' murder have turned up in her schoolbag. What Jess hadn't realised, what that when you're being watched at all times, snooping about and trying to discover who is behind this all, isn't easy. This was an easy, predictable read. I didn't really feel anything for any of the characters though which was the main downfall for me. |
This is a brilliant read. Wonderful well written plot and story line that had me engaged from the start. Love the well fleshed out characters and found them believable. Great suspense and found myself second guessing every thought I had continuously. Can't wait to read what the author brings out next. Recommend reading. |
I’ve tried a couple of times to read this one but I just couldn’t get into it. I’m really struggling with the format and writing, so unfortunately I’m having to DNF it and give up with this one. |
Unfortunately, I have not been able to read and review this book. After losing and replacing my broken Kindle and getting a new phone I was unable to download the title again for review as it was no longer available on Netgalley. I’m really sorry about this and hope that it won’t affect you allowing me to read and review your titles in the future. Thank you so much for giving me this opportunity. Natalie. |
Hmmmm wasn’t sure about this one! Jess lost her mum at 7 to a serial killer called the magpie man, and wants justice. She’s a social media Moghul and uses that to her advantage in trying to trap him, doesn’t always work in her favour! It’s not a bad book; creepy in places and has a few twists, I just struggled to a associate with the characters fir some reason. A good read all the same 😃 |

Are you Watching is a book that you will not want to put down. It is a very well written Young Adult thriller that that uses modern day obsession with reality TV to tell the story of a young girl trying to catch the serial killer who killed her mother. This book illustrates how social media can either work for you or against you depending on whether the people commenting on your actions support you or criticise you from behind the safety of their screens. My thanks to Net Galley, the publisher and the author for an advance copy in exchange for an honest review. |
Lost access to my eARC due to a problem with my kindle account - will probably get ahold of a finished copy of this in the next few months as I'm still highly interested in this and will come back and include review when I do. |
Okay I haven't read thrillers in a long time and there is definitely a reason for it. The police is usually useless. I guess it's a big point in this book as Jessica eventually takes things into her own hands, but still, GAH! What I did like was the twist, turns and build up in the book. I expected so much.. and then right into what I liked less. While I expected so much, the ending didn't really deliver, it was just over too quickly. I feel like that's something that I experience with a lot of young adult books, and I really hope it's something that I don't encounter too often. Then ending of a book is so important |
Are you Watching is a book that you will not want to put down. It is a very well written YA thriller that that uses modern day obsession with reality tv to tell the story of a young girl trying to catch a serial killer who killed her mother well. I feel this would be a good book to help my students understand that social media either work for you or against you depending on wether the people commenting on your actions support you or criticise you from behind the safety of their screens. |
This is great premise of a serial killer and the daughter of the first victim trying to catch him. It’s original and exciting and it’ll take you on a huge rollercoaster. Really can not recommend enough. 4/5. |
Jess applies for a reality tv to help avenge the Magpie Man who brutally murdered her mother 10 ago. However, it seems to have provoked the killer and she is now on his list of victims. Fast paced and contemporary plot makeS a great read. New author to me and will be wanting to read more. |
Not my usual genre, but a good read nonetheless. Fast-paced and well-written creepy and twisted it held my imagination right until the end. Recommended. |
Jessica signs up to appear in a new internet reality show where people watch her every move. Unlike the other contestants, she hasn't signed up to get famous. She's signed up to see if she can finally find the Magpie Man, a serial killer who killed her mother ten years before. Soon, Jessica starts to receive creepy text messages and someone is following her and watching her. Old articles about her mother's murder start to appear in her schoolbag. She starts trying to find out who is doing this, but with them watching her every move it's not as easy as it seems. This is a YA adult book and I normally don't read this genre as I feel I'm too old for it. However, I was surprised to find it was not trying too hard to be 'down with the kids' For me, I wasn't that bothered about most of the characters as they lacked depth. It was an easy read which kept me reading and I was quite curious to see what would happen. Unfortunately, I found the plot predictable and it wasn't gripping enough either. Whether this is because it was a YA book, I'm not sure. Overall, it was OK and probably would be enjoyed by the age group it is aimed towards. |

I wouldn’t usually read YA books but this one appealed and I’m LS glad I read it. I was hooked from the start - 17 year old Jess’ mum was the first victim of the so called “Magpie Man” who has gone on to kill another 12 women. The loss early on in her life has affected her badly, and her father has never been the same again. When Jess get the opportunity to have her life filmed 24 hrs a day, once a week for a month, she decides to use this as a platform to try and lure out the man that killed her mother to get some long overdue justice. There were some great twists to this story and lots to learn about friendships. I really enjoyed it and couldn’t put it down, reading it in less than a day. |
I wasn't sure about this one, it sounded good so I thought I'd request but it turned out not to be for me. It was just not able to hold my attention |
Are You Watching is written with YA readers in mind, but I think it will be an amazing read to readers of all ages and blow some minds along the way. It's an intense read with plenty suspense and intrigue. I got drawn in from the start and couldn't stop reading. The story flows and there is nothing left open in the end, no gaps, no questions. Highly recommended.. |

What an excellent book, intrigue and suspense a plenty. Some great characters who were easy to empathise with. A flowing story which left no gaps and kept me interested. Great book, highly recommended. |
Jess’s mother was murdered by the ‘Magpie Man’ when she was 7 years old. The serial killer has gone on to murder 12 more women and the police are no further forward in their hunt to catch the killer. The Eye is a new version of a reality show where the successful candidates are followed for a day a week for a dedicated YouTube channel. Jess is determined to be selected and to use the show as away of tracking down the Magpie Man before he kills again. Jess quickly finds out that the processes is more difficult than she imagined but will she be successful in finding her mum’s killer. Also she learns a lot about the people around her, the true picture of grief and the value of true friendship. A real thriller, right to the end! |
