I've been enjoying reading the books released through Flame Tree Press and this is another example of why - supernatural horror in the woods with some creepy kids thrown in for good measure. For me, this book misses out on 4-stars just due to a lot of information about hunting (no issue with this, just heavy on detail about hunting in general) and lots of scenery building. Good read though!

Boy In the Box

No Spoilers.
Solid 4.5 Star review

A later in life coming of age tale of four young men who encountered a tragedy during a camping trip 10 years ago. Each of the main characters are normal guys, who, due to their tragic experience have become flawed adult men with some serious emotional issues.

Main character Jonathan is the leading protagonist and while he has managed to cope and try to achieve a normal life for the past 10 years, the cracks are starting to show.

I started this review before even finishing the awesome horror novel because I didn't want to lose the excitement I felt about the book. Had to take a break at 72% in to get ready for work so there was no sleeping last night. Could not put this book down, that's how good it is. .

The ending was jaw dropping. So unexpected. There is so much to consider in the last several chapters that can be viewed a different ways depending on how you think or what you believe. Either way, I am grateful to have read it and I will be thinking about it for awhile.

Well written, great characters, unique plot that keeps you interested. It's great, I love it and strongly recommend it. to anyone who enjoys the horror/mystery/ thriller genre.

The author must be able to read into my mind because this book had everything I love to read. The book starts out with men hunting in the woods and spooky forest, with lots of action, camping, hiking, snow, mountains, death, and plain terror! But then it also has family, love and lots of friendship. There is also some really creative nightmares, both supernatural but real too. How could anyone not enjoy this and I will probably read it again. If anyone wants to recommend books similar to this please let me know and I possibly can tell you a few choice ones that I have enjoyed reading. Hopefully this author will keep writing more suspenseful books like this one. Thank you NetGalley for letting me read this!! I highly recommend it and will be sure to give a review

A great "your sins will find you out" story. King-Esq to be sure but a fresh take on the angle with the kids and the cameras. that was a high point. Through in guilt and the "road of progress and I think you will all enjoy!

I love a good horror book and I loved the premise of 'Boy in the Box'. The plot has all the makings of a film.

Plot-
Ten years ago a mysterious and tragic hunting accident deep in the Adirondack Mountains left a boy buried in a storied piece of land known as Coombs' Gulch and four friends with a terrible secret. Now, Jonathan Hollis and brothers Michael and Conner Braddick must return to the place that changed their lives forever in order to keep their secret buried. What they don't realize is that they are walking into a trap -- one set decades earlier by a supernatural being who is not confined by time or place: a demon that demands a sacrifice.

This is quite a thrilling read if you like a book which has horror and supernatural elements. This is not a long novel and frankly I was quite invested in knowing what happens next.

Enjoyed this one.

This is a story of the horror of guilt. Four men on a hunting trip accidentally shoot and kill a boy, whom they decide to bury and cover up the whole thing. Only it wont stay buried. The guilt alone is eating at these men's lives but it turns out there is a supernatural force also at play. The remote place where the incident happened is soon to become a highway so the remaining three of the group decide to go back and dispose of the body in a safer location. This is when it becomes apparent there is a lot more going on than guilt over an accidental murder. My favorite part was wondering what on earth a child was doing so far from civilization alone in the forest at night. One of the men discovers many stories and videos showing children on hunting cameras. No reason any of them should be where there images were captured. So who are these forest children and what are doing? This was a good horror tale with satanic type supernatural elements. Thank you Netgally and the publishers for the ARC.

One of my most favourite horror books of recent times is 2011's The Ritual by British writer Adam Nevill, which was turned into a rather good film in 2017, well worth checking out. The story concerns four British former university friends reuniting on a hiking trip through the Swedish Forests. The group is forced to take a shortcut through the woods (never a good idea), and then inevitably getting lost. Later they would encounter Moder, a giant goat-like beast with human arms.

I was reminded of this tale when reading Marc E. Fitch's wonderfully evocative and terrifying horror novel Boy in the Box which had me reading it long into the night. Replacing the wilds of Sweden is Upstate New York where another group of four men, this time out hunting, accidentally kill a young boy and then decide to bury the body.

Ten years on and their secret remains buried but a new road is being built through the area which threatens to reveal all. Three of the party that remain alive, decide to go back to retrieve and dispose of the body but will the original hunters now become the hunted? And who exactly was this boy? No one was ever reported missing and the area where he was killed was in the middle of a vast wilderness. Could it be that a supernatural being is at large who demands a sacrifice? If you like a page turning thrilling read then I think you may like this.
