Drawing Birds by Maury Aaseng is a good guide to draw birds with very detailed and easy to follow instructions. I would highly recommend it for all the amateur to intermediate artists out there

This is a lovely book for the drawing enthusiast and/or birdwatcher. It only clocks in around 40 pages, but those pages cover materials, the Walter Foster techniques, and various species of birds to draw. It provides inspiration and levels to progress from for the novice or experienced artist.

Just love the bird drawings in this book by Maury Aaseng -- every single one is lovely. This is a typical drawing technique book focused on birds. I especially enjoyed the pages describing the various bird features. If you're looking for a typical Walter Foster type drawing book, this book fits the bill, and Maury Aaseng gives detailed hints and tips at every step. Unfortunately, it seems that this type of drawing instruction does not work for me, but the book is worth it just to look at the pictures.

This was a great book with a few birds drawing project that are easy to follow. They are a step-by-step project, but on the side you learn about textures and details and when putting everything together you are left with a great graphite drawing of a bird.

I am always interested in seeing what I can learn from art books and new ways to improve my ability to render images with pencil and/or paint. Six birds were used as examples but the techniques would be useful in drawing any bird.

What I liked:
* Each bird had many steps with precise directions that allowed me to see what pencil to use where and how what was done in each step made the birds pop out from the page.
* Words I wrote down were: pencil use, definition, shading, dimension and movement
* The descriptions about how to create a variety of feather types, beaks, eyes and feet
* Birds were shown on branches, flying and from more than one position/side
* Bark, leaves, branches, pin needles, knots in trees, water and flowers were discussed
* It was simple but detailed at the same time and easy to follow

I requested and received an advanced reading copy of this book from NetGalley and the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

The description of this book states: After learning the drawing basics, jump into the easy step-by-step projects to draw specific birds, including a barred owl, a great blue heron, a ruby-throated hummingbird, a gray parrot, a pileated woodpecker, and black-capped chickadees. As a beginner level drawer, I will say that the easy step-by-step is not that easy to follow. It starts with you already having the ability to look at a picture of a bird and draw it, with just the briefest instructions on how to do so using basic shapes.

That being said, this book does provide great instructions on how to shade, which tool to use to obtain the desired effect, which stroke to use to achieve different textures and shades. I would definitely come back to this book to improve my techniques once I was able to draw the outline of a bird.

I gave this book 4 stars because if you had a novice to intermediate skill level the amount of detail provided by the author would allow you to create beautifully detailed birds and apply the techniques to future drawings.

The huge variety of birds offer you plenty of possibilities to draw
In her book "Drawing: Birds. Learn to Draw step by step" the artist Maury Aaseng states as her goal: "... I will show you how to create the basic shapes that give different birds in various habitats and poses their form. Then, through a series of steps, I will help you bring them to life with simple drawing tools and a variety of techniques."
The book is one of the 40-page books from the "Drawing ... step by step" series, published by Quarto Publishing Group - Walter Foster. The eight chapters can be divided into two areas: 1) tools & materials and basic techniques and 2) six step-by-step projects to draw different birds from a photograph.
The book presents itself with great graphics and design. Tips and additional instructions are included throughout the book. They are a great help for the budding artist. It is helpful and inspirational for beginning (and advanced) artists who are wanting to draw birds. It would make a nice gift and I would recommend it for them. Readers need to be aware that it is a basic book, index and information where the needed materials can be bought are missing. It is also important to know that the book only touches drawing with graphite pencil, drawing with colored pencils is not included in the book. Furthermore, it would have been helpful if the reference photos could be downloaded since the are of small size in the book.

Drawing: Birds is a new book in the Learn to Draw Step by Step series. Released 7th May 2019 by Quarto on their Walter Foster imprint, it's 40 pages and available in paperback and ebook formats.

The titles in this series are all formatted in a similar manner and this one is no exception.

A short general introduction (10%) covers tools and materials including pencils, paper, blending tools, etc. The intro is followed by a group of non-specific tutorials on graphite techniques, shading, light, shapes and perspective. The following tutorial chapters are specific for different bird subjects and include specific anatomy: eyes, claws, beaks, etc, leading to some full body specific studies (hummingbird, owl, heron, woodpecker, chickadee).

I like these tutorial booklets, they're inexpensive and full of useful info for artists looking for improvement in their own work.

Four stars - for what it covers and for a very short tutorial guide, it does the job admirably well.

I am a beginner artist and find these books very helpful as I work toward improving my skills.
I enjoy drawing nature related content, and this book is the perfect addition to my collection of how-to books. The instruction is easy to follow and there is a nice variety of birds to learn to draw.
I would recommend this book to beginners leaning toward intermediate creatives.

Drawing:Birds by Maury Aaseng is a helpful step-by-step guide to help teach the readers how to draw birds. It provides tips to help better your drawing. This guide focuses on specific birds and how to draw them. Despite focusing on specific species of birds, it provides you an idea of how to work with other birds.
The part that had lost me most was the switching between pencil types. There was no real explanation for what the difference between the types were.

I've read and used a few of this Drawing series now and find them all to be great guides and helpful for artists both new and experienced who want to improve their techniques..
This Birds edition is particularly nice for shading and textures, like recreating tricky feather textures. It tackles mainly black and white drawing but gives tips for pencil, charcoal and other mediums. There is another book in this series about colour pencil basics that would be an ideal companion to this, perhaps if you were buying them together as a gift for someone.
I used it with pencil and paper drawing but I think you could adapt the techniques for tablet and digital art too.

This book is a handy guide for the people who want to learn how to sketch. I've usually not been drawn to books about sketching but rather watching videos as ro really see the technique but this book is really nice to flip through and read about how the work is done.

"Drawing: Birds" is an art instruction book on how to draw birds with graphite pencil. The author started by briefly discussing the tools, materials, and basic pencil drawing techniques (for shading and such). He then went into step-by-step projects for how to draw an owl, heron, hummingbird, parrot, woodpecker, and chickadees. He also did sidebars describing how to draw specific parts like the beak or feathers and textures like tree bark and water. The step-by-step projects were basically what pencil to use and what order to add detail and shading. The finished projects were highly detailed and look like a lot of work, though he stated that they take less work than they appear to. I'd recommend this short book to artists who have at least some basic drawing experience and who want to improve their bird drawings.

This book was nicely set out and illustrated throughout with clear guidelines on how to draw a bird etc.
I loved how it was aimed for the beginner but when you put pencil to paper and start to draw your creation. from scratch from the guidelines of this book and create something that looks like a bird. Then, sit back and admire your drawings!

I highly recommend this book especially if you want to draw something that can be hard to draw

I loved this book the artwork is excellent and the birds are fascinating. Odly my favorite tips are techniques on drawing bark and pine needles but I love trying to draw trees. The addition of birds will definitely enhance my art and this is a fantastic resource for learning to draw birds. I received this book from NetGalley for an honest review.

I love this book. Drawing birds in detail is fascinating. Even though it is a short book there is plenty of detail and enough instruction for the intermediate artist. The skills learnt are transferrable so you could try any bird of interest. I liked the selection of studies too and had a quick try of the parrot with excellent results. For intermediate artists a lovely book on how to draw a variety of birds; owl, woodpecker, parrot, heron, humming bird, chickadee in their natural habitat. Beautiful illustrations and simple instructions on how to draw the various features.
