His & Hers is a psychological thriller that will appeal to Alice Feeney's many fans and bring her new ones. It is a roller coaster of a story involving Anna, a TV news reporter, and DCI Jack Harper. Back in Blackdown, the village they both grew up in, he is investigating the murder of a woman whose body he recognises. Jack and Anna have previous history and soon one murder follows another. There are many twists and turns to come and I defy anyone to guess who the murderer is. In fact, I found it to be an unlikely protagonist and the ending beyond reality! But still a good read with excellent characterisation. Many thanks to Netgalley and HQ for the opportunity to read and review His & Hers.

Having listed to Alice Feeney's second novel I Know Who You are on audio book and thoroughly enjoyed its audacious plot I was keen to read more so thrilled to be offered the chance to read His and Hers. This book certainly didn't disappoint with the twists and turns of the literary equivalent of the roller coaster seemingly never ending.

The book is told from two different viewpoints DCI Jack Harper who is investigating the murder of a woman, one he knew having both grown up in Blackdown. Anna Andrews gives us another view from her position of a journalist, one who has been employed presenting the 1pm news on the BBC. She travels back to Blackdown where she grew up only to find her ex-husband is in charge of the investigation. As the story reaches back into the past the number of suspects only seems to grow. This is a book where everyone could be a suspect but even so the outcome was a complete surprise.

What can break this type of story which lets face it, inhabits the very edge of believability, is the motives and characters and Alice Feeney has nailed both. The characters may not be particularly likeable but they are definitely distinctive with a large enough helping of humanity scattered throughout the book to keep the reader engaged in finding the truth.

His and Hers by Alice Feeney
Surprisingly I had never read another book by this author but reading this has made me keen to search out her other novels. The story is told from two different perspectives that of DCI Jack Harper and Anna Andrews a presenter for the BBC. We view the story through their eyes but we are unable to judge the reliability of their version of events. He has left the Major Crime Team in the Met for a job in a sleepy Surrey Village and Anna has just had her dream job, presenting the lunchtime news, snatched from her by her predecessor’s sudden return from maternity leave.
We know that they both hold many secrets and as these are gradually revealed we twist and turn; believing all the time that we know what is happening only to have our ideas repeatedly challenged. We know from the outset that Anna has suffered a traumatic experience and it is also revealed early on that DCI Jack Harper had a relationship with the dead woman that he would prefer no one found out about. All the evidence seems to point us in his direction but things are never that simple.
Setting the story in Blackdown Woods means they become an additional menacing character in the novel. The story keeps you gripped to the very last page as you race to establish which truth you can believe. It is definitely a novel which I will recommend to my various book groups and will definitely get people talking. Many thanks to Net Galley and the publishers for the opportunity to read this book in return for an honest review.

This was an addictive read that’s for sure! It was a shocker too. Chapter after Chapter the author unravelled a little bit more and although at times it contributed to the chaos and could be quite confusing – it was also what kept the pace of the book going for so long.

The connections within this book are twisted together so well that it’s hard to unravel them but Alice Feeney does it carefully, dropping shockers along the way. The characterisation is great – different sides to every story…and every character. If you’re looking for a clever, fast-paced read, then this is the book for you.

This is actually my first book from Alice Feeney but I have heard so many great things about her. Having read this, I will certainly be reading from her again!

This book is jam packed full of twists and turns which keep you guessing right until the end. The book was so well thought out that even by the end there are still so many questionable characters and you don’t know whether you can trust them or not.

Thank you to NetGalley for providing an ecopy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

This is a must read for anyone who loves psychological thrillers where you’re kept off balance by the use of the first person. The chapters alternate between him and her and you don’t know who to trust. Just when you think you’ve worked it all out, another event happens and you’re forced to rethink. My brain was exhausted by the end but I’m not complaining as this is what I crave from a book. Well written, good rounded characters and a great dramatic suspenseful plot - what more could you want!

This was very cleverly written but this made it much more complicated to follow through. The story is based on the fact 5hat 5here ar3 two sides to any story but also many many different facets expanding from these two sides. So many red herrings all extremely plausible and I never resolved the truth until the author clarified all ev3nts in the finale. Well written with all characters being so well described in both appearance and behaviour patterns. Fantastic story line, very original with high emotions throughout.

What a rollercoaster ride!

This is a story of two sides. Jack Harper and Anna Andrews both have links to Blackdown and find themselves back there again following the murder of Anna’s childhood friend. But one, or both, of them knows more than they are letting on.

The novel is set up with ‘His’ and “Her’ story running throughout. The killer is also talking in these accounts, but it is not clear if it is one of them, both of them, or someone completely different. At times, I found this confusing and frustrating, but this could have just been down to the formatting of the novel because it was an ARC.

The reading was fast paced and had me second-guessing myself and the characters. The twist at the end was completely unexpected, and the book was made better for this.

A fabulous thriller, I would strongly recommend and I will read this author again.

TWISTIN’ HELL 😱

What a page turner, Alice Feeney has done it again 👏🏽 I enjoyed this so much that I stayed up way past my bedtime - switched my bedtime bun to my stresstime bun to help me cope with the intensity of the last 20% of that book. Because that’s what it was, intense, fast paced, full of twists and turns.

Told from two perspective (His & Hers) we follow a murder investigation and if you want a book to keep you guessing this is the one! I had sort of guessed the main ‘twist’ but I dismissed it as I couldn’t make it work in my head - and we all know I love that in a book.

Highly recommend for a fast paced psychological thriller which takes you in directions you aren’t prepared to go.

There is so much back and forth in this book I genuinely did not know what was going on, but in a good way. This book was incredibly gripping and surprising.
I would recommend to all

My thanks to Netgalley and HQ four a copy of “His and Hers” for an honest review.

I loved Alice Feeney’s other books and this one didn’t disappoint.
So many twists and turns, I was constantly changing my mind to what was going on, ,and I didn’t guess the ending !
I did find it at times uncomfortable to read due to the brutality described but it was necessary for the storyline I think.
Another one of her books to recommend

I absolutely devoured this book! I have loved everything I have read by Alice, and this was no exception. It was brutal and emotional and some of it was very uncomfortable reading. 5 stars!

His and Hers is a story told in two parts. His is DCI Jack Harper, hers is Anna Andrews. Anna worked hard to become the presenter of the 1pm news on the BBC. She’s put her career before friends, family and her ex-husband. When asked to cover a murder in Blackdown, Anna is reluctant to return to the former sleepy village where she grew up. Then she discovers the victim is her former school friend. Not only is she covering the story, she seems to be at the heart of it. Jack meanwhile left London for good reason but didn’t expect to be heading up a murder investigation. It also appears he knew the victim but then appears to be a suspect in his own murder investigation. Someone knows more than they are letting on, but who? Written from both Jack and Anna’s points of view, this book will draw you in a keep you guessing until the end. It’s brilliantly written and entertains with each turn of the page. Highly recommended and I wouldn’t rate this book 4.5 stars. Thank you to NetGalley, HQ and the author for the chance to review.

Having read and loved Sometimes I Lie, I was excited to receive an advance copy of this title. Yet again this is such a well written book. I love the descriptions of the two main characters, Anna Andrews and DCI Jack Harper. We are introduced to them with all their faults which is entertaining, honest and amusing.
The tale is told from each of their perspectives - and then there is the truth and the history and relationship of the women involved. Very cleverly told, if a little far-fetched at the end?
Many thanks to Netgalley/Alice Feeney/HQ for a digital copy of this title. All opinions expressed are my own.

If anything, His & Hers is a definite page turner.
Alice Feeney delivers an easy flowing enjoyable read, and for me the bar was set pretty high after finding ‘I Know Who You Are’ very entertaining.

I absolutely loved the twists and reveals as the story progressed, gripping until the very end.

Favourite quote (and oh so poignant) “Parents spend their youth trying to understand their children, children spend their adulthood trying to understand their parents.”

Hey Guys,

Sorry it's been a while with this review.

I managed to get a quarter of the way through this book- but found it really hard to get into the storyline. I haven't been able to focus on reading with the COVID 19 so haven't been going to back to reading as much as I would like as it would help pass time during the lockdown. When I did go back to read it, My kindle then crashed and it hasn't saved where I was in the book.

Therefore I am unable to give a review at this time.

Really thankful for the advanced copy though, this time round with circumstances how they are I just haven't been able to read.

Dark and twistedly evil that will keep you gripped throughout.

I could not put this book down and just when I thought I had guessed who the culprit was.... totally shocking it was not the person I thought!!!

Well done!! Fabulously gripping novel!!!

The story as the title implies is told from two perspectives. ‘His’ is DCI Jack Harper, head of MCT in Blackdown, Surrey a quintessential, sleepy and beautiful English town in the stockbroker belt. He’s a bit crumpled, not living his best life having retreated to Blackdown from the Met following a tragedy. ‘Her’ is Anna Andrews a temporary BBC news presenter filling in for a colleague who has been on maternity leave. Anna has plenty of secrets and there are several versions of ‘her’. When a Jane Doe is discovered stabbed multiple times in Blackdown Woods, Anna is sent to report on the case. Oh, yeah - and the added curveball that Jack and Anna are recently divorced.

The novel is well written and has a lot of excellent descriptions and metaphors of what it’s like inside His and Her heads. The plot is good and you think you have the truth sorted and then you realise you so haven’t as both perspectives are contradictory. It has more twists than a corkscrew and at times it’s so dark you can barely see a hand in front of your face. It’s mysterious, tense, creepy and spooky. The setting especially of Blackdown Woods adds an extra dimension of atmosphere as even the most benign woods at night can feel scary. There are revelations and shocking events to keep you wanting to read on and on.

An extremely dark and tense murder mystery with many shocks, twists and red herrings to keep you guessing!

One story,
Two sides; Yours and mine, ours and theirs, his and hers,
Someone is lying...
Anna, a BBC news reporter/presenter and DCI Jack Harper both narrate this unsettling and creepy story of murder, secrets, lies and betrayal.
Everyone is telling their own version of the story, but who is telling the truth?

His and Hers was a bit slow to get started, but once it got going, wow! It was dramatic, addictive, and had an element of horror with it's disturbing plot! The writing was excellent, slowly revealing shocks and twists all the way through, rather than just at the end, but that ending!!!
The ending was a little unbelievable, in a dramatic and crazy way, but I didn't see it coming, and really enjoyed it, and found it satisfying! I couldn't figure it out, and had to reread the last few pages again. I think I had my mouth open for about 5 minutes after, saying wait whaaaat?!! Lol

This book had so many tropes that I like:
🔪 A hardened detective, and a woman with a tragic past and a drinking problem,
🔪 Unreliable narrators,
🔪 Flashbacks to an all girls school,
🔪 Quintessential English town with secrets,
🔪 Creepy woods

It was dark, gritty, and could be quite horrific, so there are a whole slew of trigger warnings that I could list, but just expect them all because there was everything from bullying, to rape and animal cruelty.

I liked the different POVs of Anna and Jack, with some of the murderers thoughts thrown in, but it was a bit confusing in this copy, hopefully that will be ironed out in the final edit! I loved the short chapters, which kept me turning the pages, and I enjoyed the suspense, as Alice Feeney took us down different paths, wondering who the killer was, and what their motives were! It was twisted, and I couldn't trust anyone!

I loved the setting in a small town surrounded by creepy woods, and I felt that the main characters were very well written. Sometimes I hated them both, sometimes I pitied them, sometimes I found them weak, and sometimes I sympathised with them. They were both complex characters, who were both likeable, and unlikeable in their flaws.

This was my first Alice Feeney book, but I own Sometimes I Lie, and need to get to it!

If you are after a dark, gritty thriller with many unlikeable and unreliable characters, are not afraid of violence, and need a bit of a crazy read to take your mind off things, then I would definitely recommend this!
