For a paranormal mystery series, this is one of the better ones I have read. I am totally in love with Lucy, and the cast of characters have me devouring the pages. I can't wait to read more in this series. For an enjoyable experience try Angie Fox, these books really ticked all my boxes, good mystery, paranormal activity, slight romance and wonderful writing. I received an e-book from NetGalley in return for an unbiased review. |

I have never read any of Angie Fox's books until now. When NetGalley offered the chance to read the first books in her Southern Ghost Hunter series. Once I started reading the first one, I was hooked. I did not stop until I had read book 2 and the novella included in this anniversary package. There are plenty of extras in this set. This series is funny, quirky and entertaining. I will be picking up the rest of this series to read more about Verity and her friends! |
The Southern Spirits 5th Anniversary Deluxe Box Set is a great way to get more for your dollar with the first three books in the series plus bonus material at the end. I really enjoy this series and have read up to the current title (spoiler alert, it only gets better). Reading this box set I re-fell in love with Verity, Ellis, Lucy and Frankie all over again. The Southern setting and particularly the imagery of Verity's Antebellum home is so rich you can just imagine it. But if imagination isn't your thing, illustrations at the end of the books really cement the image in your mind. Highly recommend this series, can't believe how many books have been pumped out in 5 years and I look forward to seeing what happens in the next 5 years. |
This cover, and others from this series, are not my favorite. I can say that if I was going by this cover, I would not have picked up this book. Thankfully, I was given this book free in exchange for an honest review, and I was pleasantly surprised. I have previously read some of the demon slayer series by Angie Fox and I liked the ones of those I got around to reading. Angie has a way of writing these characters in supernatural situations that makes them seem like anyone, and not like it’s something that could only happen in a parallel universe or another planet. The southern ghost hunter series focuses on the life of Verity Long, destitute, single, and desperate, she accidentally dumps the ashes of a prohibition era gangster, in her grandmas rose bushes and winds up chaining his ghost to her house. Along with Frankie (the aforementioned ghost), her part time librarian sister, and a little help from the local sheriff, she solves ghost troubles for her town. I am really intrigued by the characters in this series and really want to know more about Frankie and his life before being grounded to Verity’s house, and even before death. I think he alone would make up a great series. I had a really hard time with one specific thing in these books that I really had to work hard to get past so that I could like Verity, so if you don’t want to know any spoilers at all (including minute details) read no further, except to hear there are references to sexual assault that may be triggering for some readers. . . . . . . . Southern Spirits starts out with Verity trying to come up with as much cash as she can because she has been sued by her ex fiancé and his mama, for leaving him at the alter. She is forced to pay back every cent to them that was spent on a wedding she wasn’t any part in planning. Now I could totally get past that, the reason I struggled was because the reason Verity left him at the alter was because he was a cheater and had manhandled her sister. Her reasoning for not coming clean and just paying the family back the money and becoming the town pariah, was because she was saving her sister the embarrassment.....EXSQUEEZE ME???? I’m sorry, but no. If her sister was SEXUALLY ASSAULTED by her ex fiancé she should have grabbed him by his ear, dragged his ass in front of his mama and her sister , pushed him to his knees and made him beg her sister for forgiveness, THEN had her sister file a police report. This was a very difficult line of narrative that I just could NOT accept or get into and the only reason I would not continue reading this story. |
Angie Fox has crafted a delightfully quirky Southern town for her protagonist- Verity Long. In the first book Verity accidentally traps the ghost of an old gangster on her property. This leads to some very funny but also scary situations for Verity as she learns more about the existence of the dead who have not gone to the light. The first book becomes an absolute page turner that may keep you up past your bedtime (voice of experience here.) The combination of romance, supernatural and mysteries involving both the living and deceased is well written to entertain and surprise you. I love the addition of the Novella and other extras that are included in this Anniversary Edition. |
This collector’s edition has two full books over 35o pages each and a small novella that is super cute and inspiring. This is the type of bind-up that will give you a great introduction to the series and then suck you into the world enough that you will want to continue on with book three. Southern Spirits Book #1 4.5 Stars This is the first book in the Southern Ghost Hunter mystery series by Angie Fox. This book was like a comedy of errors. First Vertity traps Frankie on her property after she dumps his ashes into the garden thinking it was just an ordinary vase in need of washing. Now he is stuck to just haunting her property. But since there is a bit of residue in the vase, Verity can tote the container around and it gives Frankie the ability to move beyond the house’s property line. Verity is in a bind. She is about to lose her house and she needs money fast. First Frankie has a get rich quick idea which backfires, then she realizes that with Frankie’s help, she can see spirits. Now her ex’s brother, Ellis, is in need of a little ghostbusting and enlists Verity to assist him in disposing of the annoying spirits causing destruction on his property. Verity can’t say no. She needs the money. But being around Mr. Wonderful won’t be easy. He is the brother of her ex and he doesn’t have the highest opinion of her. Not to mention, he is the town cop and could probably arrest her if he so willed. I thought this was a hilarious cozy mystery romp into the spirit world. I never knew what to expect and the plot went places that would probably crop up in future books. The world building on this was awesome. What a great start to a series. I am looking forward to seeing what Fox has in store for us next. I am intrigued by the budding relationship between Verity and Ellis too. Crossing my fingers for a love match between the two of them. A Ghostly Gift Book #1.5 5 Stars This is the first novella (#1.5) in the Southern Ghost Hunter mystery series by Angie Fox. This was a real quick read and there wasn’t a lot of conflict here or mystery. Everything was wrapped up in very few pages but I thought it was so sweet how Verity helped a lonely ghost find his lost love. Just AWE-inspiring! Just wish there had been some Ellis sightings in this novella. I missed seeing him in the pages of this one. Skeleton in the Closet #2 4.5 Stars This is the second book in the Southern Ghost Hunter mystery series by Angie Fox. I feel like there is a real kinship to the Scooby-Doo gang here. Not sure why. There are ghosts, yes. But they are usually misunderstood and the bad guy is usually a living person who is not living their best life. This had a lot of good backstory and gave us a glimpse into the lives of Ellis’s parents and how invested they are into keeping their standing in the community even when a long held truth about town history is found to be an out and out lie! I never really felt like the reason Verity’s ex was trying to squeeze himself back into her life was thoroughly uncovered. By the end, when he didn’t want her anymore, I figured that he must have been as wrapped up in his family’s drama as his mother was. This series is sort of unassuming. It looks like one of those superficial cozy series that just seem to be spit out every two weeks with only a few pages to the mystery. But this is not that. This series is completely thought out and just a joy to read. I don’t feel like I am waisting my time reading this. I am enjoying the heck out of it! Can’t wait to start reading the rest of the series! I am hooked on Verity, Ellis and Frankie! If you love a good cozy mystery, definitely check this one out. You won’t be disappointed. I received this as an ARC (Advanced Reader Copy) in return for an honest review. I thank NetGalley, the publisher and the author for allowing me to read this title. |
This is an excellent and entertaining series and I loved this witty set of stories. It was a fun and engrossing read, highly recommended. Many thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this ARC, all opinions are mine. |
This is the first tow novels, a novella and some deleted and other extras in the Southern Spirits series by Angie Fox. These cozy mysteries are humorous, entertaining and clean. Verity Long becomes persona non grata in her hometown of Sugarland, Tennessee after he leaves her wealthy fiancée at the altar. Now her almost ex-mother-in-law is determined to make sure she loses everything that she cares about. She has already sold almost all the furnishings and fixtures in her home, most of clothes and tomorrow her beloved family home will be auctioned off unless she can raise another $20,000. The only thing left in her home is her futon and an old, ugly “vase” that nobody bought at the estate sale. Looking at the vase she realizes that there is a pile of dirt in the bottom; she takes it out side to hose it out and mixes the “dirt” that she can get out into the ground around her rose bushes. She soon finds out that it’s not a vase, it’s and urn and the dirt was the ashes of a now angry ghost who she has grounded Frankie to her house or wherever his urn and the few remaining ashes that are still left inside are located. Frankie knows about Verity’s situation and tells her that he knows where some money is stashed; thus, begins the adventures of a reluctant ghost-hunter and the even more reluctant ghost that is tied to her. 4.5 STARS: I received a free digital ARC through Netgalley in exchange for a honest, unbiased review. I sincerely thank Netgalley, author and/or publisher for giving me this opportunity |
Sweet, funny, and just what it says on the cover. I thorughly enjoyed it, and will probably read more by Angie Fox. A perfect story for a lazy day, bringing no great surprises. Is it brilliant? maybe not, but sometimes all a reader wants is a friendly, relaxing, enjoyable story. Oh, and a skunk absolutely makes everything better |
This review is not going to be long. I am not a huge fan of a review rehashing the entire plot and spoiling it for everyone. This is the first set of books from A ngie Fox that I have read. I loved it!!! I am going to purchase the rest of her books. The story was engaging and the charters awesome. I received an ARC of this book to read through NetGalley in exchange for a fair review. I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own. |
Highly entertaining, fun, engaging collection of emotionally thrilling adventures filled with exciting charters, witty banter, heart racing twists and thrilling turns. Really enjoyed all three of these edge of your seat adventures. Fun and thrilling stories. |

Angie Fox is one of my favorite authors. Southern Spirits is a wonderful series about a young woman who lost almost everything to her evil would be mother in law. When she accidentally binds a ghost of a gangster to her garden she gains the ability to see and talk to ghosts with his help. Her fist paying job as a ghost chaser is from Ellis, her ex-fiance's brother. Hilarity and dangerous situations ensue as Verity and Ellis form an unlikely team solving murders, helping ghosts and falling in love. This anniversary edition contains some deleted scenes and a short story in addition to the first 2 books. A must read! |
This collection of the first three stories of the series is perfect for new readers and longtime fans. Verity and Frankie have crazy adventures full of zany antics, mystery, humor, and a dose of suspense. There is a lot of charm packed into these pages. I loved the bonus content. It really is an awesome bonus for fans. You can't help but fall in love with these characters. And a few you will love to hate. |

Sassy Southern humor and charm. This is such a fun series to read and I was happy to take a walk down memory lane. Verity, her pet skunk Lucy, Frankie the resident ghostly gangster all make for such an entertaining story. Everyone should visit Sugarland Tennessee and enjoy this series. |
pet skunk, ghosts, amateur-sleuth, law-enforcement, suspense, murder-investigation, verbal-humor, situational-humor This is the exception to my usual feelings about ebook or audiobook anthologies. Included are books 1, 1.5, and 2. The perfect start to the series starring Lucy the pet skunk, Verity, and Frankie the ghostly gangster. I loved them when they first came out in audio so this was a really good excuse to begin reading them again! The bonus bits are a wonderful addition, too! If you've never read anything in this series, start here and get as hooked as the rest of us! I requested and received a free ebook copy from Moose Island Books via NetGalley. Thank you! |
I had not heard of this series until I received this ARC to review. I have been missing out. Angie Fox has created a smart, quirky, and highly entertaining world all wrapped up in the old Southern town of Sugarland, Tennessee. Mystery? Check Unwitting ghost hostage? Check Relatable main character Check Verity Long is the current black sheep of Sugarland, having abandoned the most eligible bachelor of the richest family in town. Revenge is a tricky thing and Verity is doing everything she can to not lose the house her grandmother left to her. In doing so, she accidentally traps a ghost onto her property-who happens to have been a gangster in his former life. As you can imagine, this lets loose a roller coaster of mystery and adventure. Angie Fox has created a fun world that you will want to devour. This box set is a 5th year anniversary that contains Book 1, 1.5 (a short story novella), and 2. This more than enough to begin your addiction with the Southern Ghost Hunters series. Because nothing says southern charm like ghosts, murder, and a pet skunk. This box set also contains extras that any fans of the series will surely love: deleted scenes (which if you like Frankie, you need this), closer looks at some of the characters, early book covers, a map of the house and land, etc. Read this if you want to add some fun back to your mysteries, you won't regret it. |
