I just reviewed Twisted Fairy Tales: Little Rude Riding Hood by Jo Franklin. #NetGalley

A twisted fairy tale, this one is. But a bit exaggerated rudeness of a girl, who happens to have nice parents and kind grandma. It's a good read and reminder that we ought to be polite in a society.

Although parts of this book were cute, some of the book felt forced to get a laugh. I’m not a huge fan of the illustrations either. It seemed they were all very similar.

I am often a fan of twists on fairy tales, but this one missed the mark for me. It retells Little Red Riding Hood by making her the "bad guy" and the wolf the "good guy." It's one thing to have a rude child, because, let's face it, all kids are rude at some point in time. However, her parents do nothing but say, "that's rude." Well, yeah. Red is stubborn, rude, evil little girl yet when something happens, she magically changes into a nice girl? Franklin changed the story too much with an implausible ending that just made the book not enjoyable. I am sure there are readers out there who will love it, but I am not one of them.

I love fairy tale stories and this remake was done so well. It’s a perfect read with children to help them learn manners or to remind them that they are always important. Little Rude was continuously rude to everyone she met and eventually found she was being unwanted; when she was shown the light she learnt her lesson.

The drawings in the book were really cute and went along with the story really well, I loved that the usual characters you see from red riding hood were used but in a different way.

I enjoyed this cute, quick, twisted fairytale story and if you are looking for something easy or a fun read with a child in your life this one will be a fun one for them and for you.

My nine year-old really enjoyed this book. What a great way to take an old fairy tale and make it more interesting for today's youth!

This is my second ‘twisted fairy tale’ book and I enjoyed it but felt that when she was changed to a good person it happened too quickly! Lovely message but I’d have made her sweat it a bit more!

Still a cute story and very funny!

This is such a cute twisted fairy tale retelling of Little Red Riding Hood. I love how it shows being polite and having good manners is so important. I read this to my 3rd grade class because we have been talking about being respectful and having good manners. They loved it!

I LOVED the Twisted Fairy Tales about Snow White and how that took us to space and had robots and other fun things. So I had to try out another one of my favourite fairy tales and see how it would become twisted.

Meet Little Red Riding Hood. We all know this is a sweet girl, but think again! In this one she is rude. Really, this girl has a big bad mouth, but it seems that her parents just have no clue what to do about it. They just tell her it isn't nice and that is it. Yeah, parents, that is going to help.
I loved that, instead of granny being sick, Rude Riding Hood had to visit granny to say thank you for the red hood she received. I was definitely happy that the parents finally put down their foot and pushed their kid to this.

I actually felt sorry for the poor wolf. That guy was just being so nice and he was getting insults left and right from a little girl with a big attitude. And the same for other animals in the forest. They were all trying to help and the only thing they got back is a big fat mouth that needs some soap to rinse all the badness out.

I kept wondering when she would learn, and while I did love the story it just took too long for me and I was getting frustrated with this girl. I also wasn't a fan how everyone treated the girl like glass or if she would break if they weren't nice to her. It takes just wayyyyyy too long. Even though the story is just 11 pages it felt way longer to me. Which is a shame.
Plus when things happen it just felt too magical for me.

So yeah, this one had potential but in the end it just didn't work fully for me. It took too long, it was too magical, and I just wanted someone to grab Little Rude and throw her in the pond. :|

But the art was cute. I loved how everyone was drawn and the illustrator captured Little Rude's expressions perfectly.

This is a fun twist on the classic story of Little Red Riding Hood. Little Rude's behaviour will have adults and kids alike calling out "That's Rude!". Kids will enjoy the unique characters and tricky situations that Little Rude faces as she travels to Grandma's house. Everyone will be most relieved when Little Rude discovers why manners are important. This book cleverly makes use of a beloved classic to illustrate and teach kids the importance of manners.

Fun twist on an old, classic, fairytale. Rude Red was rude and irritating but I'm glad there was a happy ending.

I read another title from this series, The Ninjabread Man, earlier this year. I absolutely hated it. The writing was atrocious and the story was weak. I do like the idea of twisting fairy tales around, however, so I decided to give Little Rude Riding Hood a try. After all, it's by a different author, and I thought maybe the writing would be better.

Sadly, the writing is plagued by the exact same issues as The Ninjabread Man! Was it a requirement to use silent dialogue tags throughout these books? "Folded her arms", "waved", and "clapped her paws" are not acceptable replacements for the word "said". So, to be fair, I knocked off a writing point for each instance of impossible dialogue tags, just as I did for The Ninjabread Man. I didn't get into the negatives here, but the writing still only gets one star.

However, the story is more enjoyable, even if the heroine is completely insufferable. Little Rude is so awful that I was wishing that the wolf would eat her. (He, unfortunately, has been taking anger management classes, so the reader is forced to put up with Little Rude for far too long.) The climax is pretty funny, but I found the resolution a bit unbelievable. I don't think a child as awful as Little Rude would even be redeemable; she comes across as having a severe personality disorder for the majority of the book, and I doubt that one incident would suddenly change her into an angel.

The illustrations are fine, just as they were in The Ninjabread Man. They're done by the same illustrator, which is nice; it helps keep continuity throughout the series.

Overall, Little Rude Riding Hood is better than The Ninjabread Man, but I still can't really recommend it due to the grammar errors that seem to be mandatory for this series.

Based on the story of 'Little Red Riding Hood.' In this story Little Rude Riding Hood doesn't have good manners but learns them. The story is longer than usual. I think it's suitable for children in Year 2+ as it reminds them of their manners.

There are colourful pictures and dialogues to engage readers.

This book was both sweet and educational. Showing relatively healthy attitudes and practices in the adults despite “Little Rude” and her remarks. I would recommend this to many friends who are teachers of young children to teach about important lessons like manners, the impact our words have, and how important it is to treat others with respect.

This book is a take on Little Red Riding Hood as can be seen from the cover.  It keeps some elements of the story while turning the story upside down.  For one funny example, the wolf has been to anger management.  Little Rude clearly has not.  Young readers may well enjoy Little Rude's behaviors as they may often feel similarly but not have permission to act out.  How does Little Rude come to appreciate manners?  Read this funny tale with a child you know to find out.

This was a cute enough story of Little Red Riding Hood if she had been rude to everyone, instead of nice. She is rude to her mom, she is rude to the wolf, she is even rude to the woodcutter.

At that point I was hoping that she would get eaten, which she did.

But she didn’t remain that way.

While I liked that she stopped being rude when she was saved, I thought it was too quick, and that it wouldn’t really reform her.

I did like that the moral was not to be rude, but not sure if it wasn’t just a little heavy handed.

A cute retelling of the Little red riding hood. Here she is a rude girl who says mean things, is selfish and doesn't help others. Mr. Wolf is a nice wolf with manners. I liked how the moral of the story is about being kinder to others and learning please and thank you.

The Twisted Fairy Tale series keep coming with a marvelous adaption of Little Red Riding Hood, except this time she's quite rude! Little Rude looks mischievous and mean and says mean things as well! Once she gets her little, red jacket on she goes for a walk to her Grandma's house and bumps into Mr. Wolf and other creatures in the forest.

I absolutely love the art style of this series. It's whimsy, bright and soft. I also totally adore re-tellings of fairy tales, so this book was just what I was looking for.

The overall theme of being nice and kind is a lovely point to make. I like that this series includes themes like this into the original fairy tales. It also made for quite an interesting spin on Little Red Riding Hood that I did not expect!

Again, my only criticism of this series is that the copies I get have a table of contents. I don't think books this short require one, but that's just my personal opinion and taste.

Super cute book that I loved reading with my nephews (10 & 8) and they loved it just as much. They laughed and loved the story and often talk about this story.
