This was a great psychological thriller. I really enjoyed reading this it was full of suspense and was an easy read. The plot and the characters were intriguing, and there was a good twist at the end that you don’t expect. It keeps you at the edge of your seat at times and it is hard to put down. The first book I have read by this author and I will be keeping my eye out for more in the future. I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys reading this genre.
Thank you netgalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for a honest review.

What do you do if you leave your husband for your lover but he doesn't leave his wife?

That's what happens here and the aftermath is a sight to see. The characters were well written and I really enjoyed it. Thrilling.

Thank you Netgalley for this ARC of The Closer You Get by Mary Torjussen.

At the time of reading, I was pretty into this book, but now thinking about the premise of it, I just get so sad. Everyone in the book is kind of terrible in their own way. There is a lot of infidelity, gaslighting, neglect, and cold dismissal. Personally, these are difficult topics to read about, and I don't usually seek them out.

But, in fairness, that doesn't mean that this wasn't a totally layered and compulsively readable drama. It didn't completely surprise me, but it also didn't strike me as formulaic, so it definitely had me on the edge of my seat.

The ending of this Mary Torjussen’s novel like her other books of psychological suspense is never quite what I expect. After reading the first few chapters of Ruby, I smugly predicted what had happened to her lover and how this story would evolve. Luckily she has so many tricks up her sleeve that the book goes places where I never imagined, leading to a shocking yet satisfying conclusion.

So, the story begins with Ruby having an affair with Harry her boss. When he does not show up at the hotel for the weekend, she is nervous because they were planning on leaving each of their spouses. She had already had done so; you find out he is with his spouse on a weekend getaway. Ruby’s whole world changes from Friday, going to work the following week she is let go and people know what she and her boss were doing, but once again it is the woman’s fault and not the man’s. once she slowly begins to put her life back in order, she is still feeling the effects, with someone posting an add with her phone number and her receiving calls for sex. She felt someone in her apartment and things being moved.
Then you met Harry’s wife Emma and you get her point and you see things from her side and then the story begins to take a whole different take when Ruby’s husband begins to try to torment her. All the while you think Harry is just free and clear well, he will get his.
What really got me was as I was getting to the end and Tom and Ruby were having it out, I realized at that moment it reminded me of the old movie “Gaslight” just a newer take on the physiological games Tom was playing, using on Ruby throughout their marriage. You get the feeling though at the end that it might not stop. For me, this is an excellent book but one that really did not get me moving along until Emma’s character came into the story than the entire book just seemed to take off, from there it was nonstop. A very good book.

A page turner that’s hard to put down. This book was written as though a movie is playing in your head and you aren’t sure who to root for. A book made to be read by everyone, it will leave you satisfied in some sense.

Wow - ALL the stars!
This was such an intense read from page 1, line 1 until the very last word. It was so dark and well written without any lulls in the story. Every page brought something sinister, heart pounding and twisted. It was really unique in the mystery thriller genre and I am so thankful my wish was granted for this book.
The twist was Amazing! I definitely want to read more by Mary Torjussen after reading this book. She is really talented and has a very twisted mind :-)
Thank you to Netgalley, the author and the publisher for my free ARC in exchange for my honest review.
5 STARS!

Ruby has an 18-month affair with her boss Harry; they agree to leave their spouses to begin a new life together. Ruby leaves Tom but then Harry doesn’t show up, and she quickly finds herself unemployed and looking for a new home. As she tries to construct a new life for herself, she starts receiving threatening messages and it seems as if she is being stalked. As her fear builds, she debates returning to Tom; he is controlling and psychologically abusive but provides physical safety.

Initially, Ruby is the first-person narrator; later, Emma, Harry’s wife, becomes a second first-person narrator. Having the perspective of both women develops character and explains motivations. And it is important for the reader to understand why they behave as they do. I certainly felt sympathy for Ruby; it is obvious that Tom has had such an effect on her that she doesn’t even know herself. For instance, when she first goes food shopping for herself, she picks up a box of cereal that she never liked but “Tom liked it and used to say there was no point in getting two different cereals, that they’d go stale.” She then wonders, “What should I buy? What did I actually like? My head started to hurt. I didn’t know. I just didn’t know what I liked. It hadn’t mattered what I liked.”

The women do not always behave in a credible fashion. Emma’s reaction to an unfaithful husband doesn’t seem realistic. Likewise, Ruby doesn’t freak out enough when bizarre things start happening to her; her reactions are definitely understated. And knowing what she does know about people, she should be able to figure out who is responsible for the strange and threatening events.

I liked the fact that Ruby proves to be a dynamic character. In many ways, she begins a journey of self-discovery when she leaves Tom. Gradually, she faces the truth about her relationships and gets to know herself. Her decisions at the end had me cheering. Emma too realizes her mistakes and shows personal growth.

There are coincidences which stretch credibility. Two chance meetings between women are especially problematic.

This book about lies and misperceptions is not flawless, but it provides an entertaining read. Certainly, character development is a positive element.

Note: I received a digital galley from the publisher via NetGalley.

Is a marriage worth saving – whatever the cost?
Ruby didn’t plan to have an affair. She doesn’t love her husband, but wouldn’t set out to steal someone else’s. Yet when she met Harry they simply couldn’t keep apart. Now, she’s brave enough to leave her marital home and start again, and so is Harry. Or so she thinks.
Waiting at a hotel for her lover to arrive, Ruby realises she has made a mistake. Harry won’t come. He will never leave his wife.
What Ruby hasn’t worked out is that someone else knows all about the affair. They have been watching Ruby’s every move. They are determined to punish her. And they are even closer than she thinks…

This is a brilliant read.
Wonderful well written plot and story line that had me engaged from the start.
Love the well fleshed out characters and found them believeable.
Great suspense and found myself second guessing every thought I had continuousluy.
Can't wait to read what the author brings out next.
Recommend reading.

I was provided an ARC from NetGalley and the publisher. This is my own honest voluntary review.

I read the synopsis for 'The Closer You Get' and it certainly sounded like the kind of good psychological thriller that I particularly enjoy. I have enjoyed a couple of Mary's other books in the past, so I knew that I was going to be in for one hell of a read and I wasn't wrong either. I really enjoyed reading 'The Closer You Get' but more about that in a bit.
I can't say that I warmed to many, if any, of the characters but that isn't such a bad thing. It meant that I could remain objective and I didn't favour one over the other.
It didn't take me long at all to get into this story. In fact by the time I had read the first few pages, I knew that I would find it quite difficult to put the book to one side for any length of time. I was intrigued by the story. I had my own suspicions as to what was going to happen so of course I had to keep reading to see if I was on the right track or I had the wrong end of the stick. The pages turned increasingly quickly the further into the story I got. I seemed to race through the latter half of the book, as the level of tension increased. I didn't manage to finish the book over the course of a single day but I finished it within 72 hours, which is still quite good for me. This was a gripping and fairly fast paced story, which had me on the edge of my seat.
'The Closer You Get' is really well written but then I think that to be true of Mary's other books too. She has a way of grabbing your attention, with an eye catching synopsis and then much like an angler landing a catch, she reels you in. Once she has your attention, she will not let you have it back until the moment you read the last word on the last page. She has a way of writing that makes you feel as though you are part of the story yourself. In fact, I was so convinced by her storytelling that I began to 'live' the story as if it were real.
In short, I really enjoyed reading 'The Closer You Get' and I would recommend it to other readers. I will definitely be reading more of Mary's other work in the future. I just know that I will enjoy reading her future work as much as I enjoyed reading this book. The score on the Ginger Book Geek board is a very well deserved 4* out of 5*.
