Enjoyable emotional domestic thriller. Page turner. Great characters. Plenty of suspense to keep me interested. Would definitely read her next novel. Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the chance to review it. |
I quite like it, it started off quick and the fast pacing helped to get in the theme. And although I guessed what would happened wrong, it was a nice surprise to find out the ending and solution. I didn't really like Ruby as a character, but I felt a huge relief for her in the end. And the same goes for Emma. |
The Closer You Get by Mary Torjussen was exactly the kind of escape I needed right now. Thank you @netgalley, @marytorjussen and @canelo_co for this arc. Ruby and her boss, Harry, are both in love but married to other people. Together they decide to leave their significant others, but Harry doesn’t show up at the hotel on the day they had conspired to run away together. Ruby then goes to work a few days later only to find out she is fired and that Harry has gone on holiday with his now pregnant wife. To add to the heartbreak and confusion, menacing things start happening to Ruby and it’s clear that someone dangerous knows about the affair. I loved this juicy book so much! I couldn’t put it down. The story was also devised in a way where the reader would find the events believable, that they can happen to anyone we know. I also enjoy books written from more than one POV, so the same situations are seen from completely different angles. This novel was a popcorn thriller during a time that has been more than difficult for me. I’m happy to have stumbled across it on NetGalley because it was a much-needed escape given everything going on in the world right now. Pick this up for a gripping and suspenseful read that you will easily rush through. |
Another one I finished in one setting. Unputdownable! A little predictable but still intriguing enough to keep me reading. Two married characters not happy with their lives fall for each other and decide to leave their spouses. But then...of course nothing goes as they planned. This is a fast paced, sexy novel with so much betrayal and surprises. I was finished before I knew it and then I didn't want it to be over! Thanks to Netgalley, the publisher and author for my advanced ebook copy. |

You've left your husband for your fancy man ( who is also your boss) and are waiting for him as arranged in the hotel while he breaks the news to his wife that they're finished. He never turns up. His phone's switched off and when you turn up to work on Monday your temporary contract has been terminated. Lots of twists and turns with a happy ending .......for some! When Ruby meets her new boss Harry, she falls in love and can't wait to start a new life with him, away from her controlling husband Tom. As Ruby waits for Harry in a hotel, she soon realises that he isn't coming and that he is staying with his wife Emma. Ruby tries to start a new life by herself and struggles with a dingy flat and a miserable job after losing her job as Harry's PA. Things take a turn for the worse as bad things start to happen to Ruby and it seems that someone is watching her and trying to get revenge. Meanwhile, Emma faces her own challenges. How will this all end for everyone? Another fantastic book by Mary Torjussen. I was gripped from the beginning and really enjoyed getting to know the characters. The plot was brilliant and it had a satisfying ending. I thoroughly recommend this book and can't wait for Mary's next novel! |
So I started this book at bed time lastnight and thought ‘I’ll read a couple of chapters before I sleep’. Oh. My. Goodness. What a book. I had to put it down at chapter 12 and force myself to sleep, my heart still racing thinking about the book. It’s fantastic. And highly suspenseful and extremely unputdownable. Highly recommend you go into this book blind as I did and I guarantee you will struggle to put this down xxx |
Oh, what tangled webs we weave.... Ruby and Harry are in love, they want a life together, happily ever after and all that.... except they are both married to other people. Other people that they must leave in order to be together. Sounds simple right? They come up with a day and a plan. They are going to tell their spouses they are leaving and meet at a hotel. But Harry never shows up. Then Ruby's life blows up. Ruby loses everything, her job, Harry isn't answering her calls and her soon to be ex-husband seems to be taking their split rather well. Just when she thinks things can't get worse - they do! This was a fun, fast, and absorbing read. I was hanging on every word Mary Torjussen wrote. I was completely riveted to this brilliantly told tale. The book is told through the POV of both Ruby and Emma (Harry's wife). Both POVs are interesting and both women proved to be interesting in her own right. This was storytelling at its best. Very entertaining with some mystery, some suspense, and a couple of twists and turns along the way. An enjoyable read which did not disappoint. I loved being the proverbial fly on the wall while reading this one. There was never a dull moment. The pacing was spot on and everything flowed flawlessly. Thank you to Canelo and NetGalley who provided me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All the thoughts and opinions are my own. |
3.5 stars. “Enjoy it while you can, Ruby Dean. I am going to blow up your life.” The Closer You Get is a fast-paced domestic drama with suspense elements. Ruby had an affair with her boss and had lost her family and her job in the aftermath. What follows is a journey of lies, deceit and revenge. The story - along with its twists - is not necessarily mind-blowing. It doesn’t bring anything new to the table, but I think it would definitely be a satisfactory experience for readers who are new to domestic suspense. |
Thank you to the author, Canelo and NetGalley for an ARC in exchange for an honest review. This was a quick, easy read - plot and main characters were well-written, but all the characters were unlikeable to varying degrees. The pacing was good, with some twists and a bit of angsty menace, all in all a satisfying if not especially memorable read. |
3.5 More drama than thriller This is a tough review because this story is crafted very well (good writing, interesting characters, well paced) but it was uncomfortable to read. I know that was the intention and it worked on me. There wasn’t one character to root for; they were all horrible. There were some twists and surprises, some I saw coming others not so much. I was quite satisfied at the conclusion. It was a quick, entertaining read. Thanks to NetGalley, the author and Canelo for a copy in exchange for a review. |
Ruby is married to Tom. Although their marriage is not physically abusive, Tom is rather demeaning towards Ruby and his words hurt her, so she is delighted to find a job to take her out of the house. What makes the job even better is her handsome boss Harry. Soon they both realize that there is a spark between them and so they plan to buy a house and move in together. Ruby can hardly contain her excitement while she is packing to leave Tom. As soon as he returns from work she tells him she is leaving and is somewhat surprised that he does not yell and shout as she anticipated.. She arrives at the hotel and waits for Harry to get there. He does not show up that night, so she assumes that he must have been held up. But when she hears nothing fro.m him the second night, she begins to worry. This thriller really keeps you reading and wondering. I enjoyed the plot and the characters and thank the publisher and Netgalley for my ARC in exchange for my honest review. |
3.5 Stars rounded up to 4! Early on in this psychological thriller from author Mary Torjussen , personal assistant Ruby Dean and her boss, Harry Sheridan, decide to leave their spouses after an 18-month affair and start a life together. Ruby tells her egotistical, emotionally abusive husband, Tom, it’s over and moves out. Then Harry never meets her as planned. At first, Ruby makes excuses for why Harry didn’t keep his word. Perhaps Harry’s wife, Emma, caused a scene or he had an accident. When she returns to work, she’s fired, and Harry is off on a romantic holiday with his wife to celebrate her pregnancy. Devastated, Ruby questions her choices and even considers returning to Tom, but ultimately forges ahead with her new life! The tension rises as more mishaps and threatening messages leave Ruby unsettled. Ruby must ultimately decide whether to trade her physical safety for her emotional well-being. The story builds steadily to an exciting climax and then flat-lines as all the loose ends are tied up. I appreciated the characters and felt compassion for Ruby and her situation! Watching her unfold into a new woman was cool! But again, the story goes flat with the ending.....wasn't quite what I was expecting! Thank you to Berkley, NetGalley and Mary Torjussen for the ARC! |
The Closer You Get by Mary Torjussen is exactly the distraction I needed in these trying and anxious days. I cannot wait to read more from this new to me author, as I so enjoyed this immersive and twisty read. Ruby has fallen hard for her boss, Harry, and the feelings seem to be mutual. The pair, both married to other people, conspire to leave their spouses and move in together. When Ruby tells her controlling husband Tom the news, he outwardly takes it all in stride. With this hurdle behind her, Ruby rushes off to begin a new life with Harry, but there is a glitch; Harry fails to turn up at the agreed upon rendezvous. Ruby's life is about to take a turn from bad to much, much worse. I was hooked on this one from the word go. If you are looking for a twisty and suspenseful diversion that will pull you into a very tangled web, this is it. Many thanks to NetGalley and Canelo for this ARC. |
An absolutely mesmerising read - one I literally couldn’t put down. Every time I thought I had worked out what was going on another twist sent me another way. Classically grilling and brilliant. |
Wow I loved this book finished it in 2 days and would of been one if I never had plans last night.such a different story to what I normally read and I was hooked from first page the characters are brilliantly written and I felt myself rooting for Ruby she was definitely my favourite and after all the stuff she’s been through she’s definitely deserves a happy ending but will she get it? I definitely recommend this book and would love to read more by this author myself. |

Gripped from the very first page until the last one. Tense, and taut. A brilliant book well written by a brilliant author. |
What a journey this book takes you on! I literally devoured this one, I absolutely loved how it slowly unfolded and took you to places you were least expecting! The characters were well executed, believable and both likeable and REALLY unlikeable. Telling the story of Ruby with her excessively controlling husband Tom and her boss Harry with his wife Emma, you see the story slowly unfold of how these 4 main characters emerge together. Ii really enjoyed the dual POV' from Ruby & Emma, the wife and the Other Woman. Written fantastically well and showing just how strong and resilient these main character's can be, even after being down trodden for years. With lots of plot twists and turns, its jam packed with love, jealousy and manipulation. A sinister, addictive read that is already at the top of my list for 2020! Definitely an edge of your seat thriller that I'd highly recommended to anyone! Massive thanks to netgalley and Canelo for the ARC. |

Oh this was just brilliant! Plenty of flawed characters all looking out just for themselves. Narcissism and selfishness abounds in this book with plenty of secrets and lies. Some of the characters can't believe life is not going the way it was planned and it isn't clear who is pulling the strings and why. So many twists and turns and some rather implausible coincidences, but I would urge you not to examine them too much, just go with the flow and enjoy the ride. My type of book, I loved this one. |
