Firstly I would like to point out that I didn’t know that this was book number 7 in the DCI Kate Daniels series and I will definitely be going back to read the others. Despite it being book number 7 it was completely standalone and there wasn’t anything about the characters I think I missed from not reading the others.

I think the best way to describe this book was like reading an episode of Criminal Minds, which suited me perfectly as I’m a huge fan. The action begins immediately with flight 0113 disappearing from the sky, but what makes this even more tense is that Kate Daniels girlfriend Jo was on that flight. What ensues is a search to find the truth….did Jo get on that plane?

I loved all the characters, especially Hank who was the perfect friend and loyal work partner to Kate. He definitely made me laugh at times too.

The book is action packed, tense and filled with a few twists along the way. Every part of the police team were brilliant and I loved reading about the way they investigated persons of interest and going undercover.

Overall this was a really enjoyable crime thriller that felt like I was reading one of my favourite programmes!

When flight 0113 from London to New York disappears over the Atlantic DCI Kate Daniels has a personal interest in what happened, Jo Soulsby, the woman Kate loves, was booked on the flight.
Kate manages to inveigle herself and her DS, Hank Gormley, into the Met investigation, determined to
find conclusive proof that Jo either was or wasn’t on the flight.
As Kate and Hank get ever deeper into the investigation they uncover mistakes and discrepancies that lead them to some very dangerous people. Moving from London back to Northumberland Kate and Hank find that things have got much closer to home and are worse than they thought.
I really enjoyed the pace of this and although it’s a slightly different tone to the other Kate Daniels books that didn’t mean it was any less enjoyable. With twists and shocks this is a very well written book.

My first Mari Hannah but not my last. A missing plane. A missing partner. An MIT operating out of their jurisdiction. Riveting stuff.

Northumberland detective Kate Daniels heads to Heathrow on a personal crusade after hearing the love of her life, profiler Jo Soulsby is listed as a passenger on missing transatlantic flight 0113. Kate worms her way into the investigation. Was this a terrorist attack or something much nearer to home? An emotional, tension-filled and fast-paced thriller. Cleverly plotted and great characters in this twisty compulsive read.

I love good mysteries, and what better than an entire plane disappearing can you ask for! The investigation into the disappearance was interesting and I couldn't wait to see where everything ended up. Recommended for anyone who loves a good mystery and the conclusion thereof.

Thrilling right until the end! A must read.

DCI Kate Daniels feels like her world is ending when she suspects that the love of her life, Jo, was onboard an ill-fated flight from London to New York that exploded in the air. Feeling powerless Kate tries to get involved with the investigation with her second in command, Hank. Eventually cutting throught he red-tape Kate and Hank find that the investigation is going to lead them down some very dark avenues and the answers that they get may not be the ones that they want.

'Without a trace' is completely thrilling right until the end. My heart was literally pounding as I approached the big turning point in the story. Although it seems to be part of a series of a books this should not impair your understanding of what is going on. I have never read any of the DCI Kate Daniels books before and I was able to follow along pretty well.

What makes this novel so enthralling is the fact that sadly the story is not beyond the realms of reality. Overall, this is a fantastic read.

Without a Trace by Mari Hannah

When flight 0113 falls from the sky over the Atlantic on its way from London to New York, DCI Kate Daniels’ world crashes around her. The love of her life, Jo Soulsby, was booked on that flight as fall out after a crisis in their relationship. Kate can’t leave her work behind her, it’s always top of her mind, and now Kate is learning the cost of that. She rushes to London with her DS, Hank Gormley, a man who is as fond of Jo as he is of Kate, and manages to talk her way into the investigation, soon working alongside the FBI to solve the mystery of what happened aboard the plane and why. Meanwhile, back in Northumberland, a gangster has been found murdered. It’s a critical case and Kate knows she should be in charge of it, as does her boss, but she has only one thing on her mind, something she has to do, and that is to discover what happened to Jo.

I am a huge fan of Mari Hannah and Kate Daniels and I’m sure I’m not alone in being thrilled that Kate has at last returned! It’s been four years since the excellent Gallows Drop but it’s as if Kate hasn’t been away. Without a Trace is part of a series but this is a stand alone story and so you could happily enjoy it without having read the others. But if you have followed these books, then you’ll know about the yo-yo relationship between Kate and Jo and about the closeness between Kate, Hank, her boss and with the rest of her team. They are tight, very tight, and this has helped to make these wonderful books so special and so emotionally charged.

Emotions can’t run higher than they do in Without a Trace. Kate Daniels can be prickly, defiant and stubborn but she also feels intensely, with so many of those guilt feelings that many of us have to deal with, I’m sure. She is a fantastic creation. She feels very real to me. Her relationships with people can be difficult but her loyalty is never in doubt and the people she works with love her. I am so fond of Hank, her second in command. He’d risk everything to see Kate through this and he never leaves her side. We also see here Kate interacting with her team’s partners. This is a family.

The story in Without a Trace is great with it really reaching its unputdownable crescendo in the second half. There is a lot of detail about planes and airports in the first half, which adds authenticity and tension (and is very impressive!) but in the second half it’s none stop action and it is exhilarating. It’s powerful stuff, very much so. You’ll have to read it to find out why.

Without a Trace was such a joy to read. It’s comforting to be back with one of my favourite detectives and my namesake. Mari Hannah is a superb storyteller as we’ve seen from this series and from the others (the Ryan books and the Stone and Oliver series). She can do no wrong and we have been given a treat with Without a Trace. I hope we see Kate again soon.

Without a trace by Mari Hannah.
A plane on route from London to New York City has disappeared out of the sky. This breaking news dominates every TV channel, every social media platform, and every waking hour of the Metropolitan Police and US Homeland Security.
Really enjoyable read. Great story. Some good characters. Hope there is more to come. 4*.

Overall I enjoyed this book and I was interested to see if Kate would be proved right as she refused to believe Jo, her partner was on the plane that went down in the sea. Two complex investigations collide and it is pulled together well. For me it was somewhat unbelievable that Kate was allowed to get away with as much as she did, taking a fellow officer and investigating the crash out of her jurisdiction for her own reasons.
However, the investigations were interesting to follow and I found myself rooting for her as I could understand her feelings.
A good read and still recommended but a bit of poetic license needed to see it through.

I received this book from Netgalley having never before read anything by Mari Hannah.

Sadly I just didn't engage until about a third of the way in once Kate's personal issues were resolved. Nor did I feel much empathy for Kate during this time, I just didn't like her. I certainly couldn't understand the amount of loyalty she received from her colleagues.

Beyond this point it was all I'd hoped for and I became engrossed and even shed tears at times.

Without a trace is obviously well researched and translated well so the layman reader does not become bogged down in police procedures and jargon even though the plot is pretty complex.

I would certainly look out for other works by this writer.

For a book that has so little 'action' it is a compulsive read. The plot centres around a plane crash killing all the people on board. DCI Kate Daniels, whose partner was booked on the flight, flaunts all instruction from her senior officer and rushes to London to try and prove her partner never took the flight because she cannot accept she is dead. The 'action' is all about following leads and finding out what happened. Kate Daniels and her second in command Hank Gormley have a very close relationship and their characters are well developed. This is a book well into a series but works perfectly as a stand alone. Well written, well paced, a definite page turner.
Many thanks to Netgalley/Mari Hannah/Orion Publishing for a digital copy of this title. All opinions expressed are my own.

hank you NetGalley and Orion Publishing Group for my free copy.

After reading the synopsis I was really excited to read this book. However, it has taken me a while to get into. I’m not sure if it is the writing style, the content or the storyline, but 20% in and I’m not sure I want to finish it.

I read a few reviews on Amazon, and people are raving about it so I’m going to persevere...for now.

I did persevere, but didn’t enjoy it, too many unanswered questions for me (I won’t list as don’t want to leave spoilers in this review). I also found the storyline for me didn’t flow, it seemed to jump around and I found myself having to go back a page or 2 to reread parts to find out what/who etc.

Without a Trace, the 7th novel in the Newcastle based detective DCI Kate Daniels series, is immensely good. The descriptions of the Newcastle and surrounding areas were one of the aspects of the series that initially attracted me, as it's close to where I live and grew up.

Flight 0113 from London to New York has gone down over the sea, but nobody is quite sure what has happened. As Kate Daniels grasps that the love of her life, Jo Soulsby, was booked on the flight, so, regardless of the consequences, she hot-tails it down to London and manoeuvres her way onto the investigation, which soon takes unimaginable turns.

Without a Trace is an excellent, suspenseful police procedural that made my heart race. This wonderful piece of writing is action-packed, creating a tense, anticipatory buzz that pulsates throughout. Just as I was recovering from one reveal, another came along and I would say that the dynamics are some of the greatest I've ever read. Not only was the plot superb and perfectly executed, but also the characters were beautifully drawn. This novel had everything a good thriller should have. It was all extremely authentic with police procedures portrayed with realism and belief and I really appreciated the attention to the finer details. In this 7th instalment, Mari Hannah has woven a complex, first-rate and sophisticated thriller - it held my attention from the first page to the last. Highly recommended and a truly worthwhile read.

I received a complimentary digital copy of this novel, at my request, from Orion Publishing Group via NetGalley and this review is my unbiased opinion.

This is the seventh book in the DCI Daniels series and definitely the best. It can be read as a stand alone and had me hooked from the first few pages. The plot is centred around the disappearance of a flight to the USA and is cleverly crafted and fast paced. The tension built right up to the last page with twists, tension and action. Mari Hannah has written an excellent police procedural which addresses the current climate. I have no hesitation in recommending this intense read. Thanks to Net Galley and Orion for my ARC. A 5*read.
