I was thrilled to read this book after reading the synopsis. I was gripped right from the beginning, since this book follows one of my favourite plots “dark secrets in small town”! Even though the story flow is written well by the author, i felt that the characters don’t have any coherence with the story. It was difficult for me to relate with the characters. I am not sure if that’s how the author wanted his characters. This is my first read from Gayle Curtis, will read the author’s other works to have better view. Thank you NetGalley, Gayle Curtis and Amazon Publishing for reader’s copy if this book. This review is my own and is not influenced in any way. |
ARC provided by NetGalley in exchange for a honest review, thank you for that. I believe this book could be better if it were edited in a way I could not only connect/understand the characters, but also see how they relate to each other. The plot was average, but not the worst if more depth was added. Overall, if i hadn't downloaded it as a review I probably wouldn't have read it entirely. |
I didn't particularly enjoy this book, I didn't like the different time lines and couldn't get involved with the story. Based on this I don't think I will read more from this author. Thank you to Netgalley and Amazon Publishing for giving me the opportunity to read this book. |
I enjoyed this book but it wasn’t a favourite. There was too much jumping around in the timeline although this seems to be the chosen writing style for this author as other books of hers have been similar. I didn’t find myself rooting for any of the characters and felt there were almost too many plot lines happening. However I didn’t guess the ending although I felt it finished too suddenly and would have like one more chapter. |

An extremely weird and strange story seemingly disjointed, jumping various time scales and different characters within the story. However kept me totally intrigued with the story right to the very end, but which left me totally confused. |
Thank you to Gayle Curtis, Amazon Publishing UK and NetGalley for this ARC. I didn't love this book, but I didn't hate it either. The story started out good, but then just became confusing and slightly annoying. I basically just skimmed the last 25% of the book. Good premise, but didn't hold my interest. |
I really like Gayle Curtis and This book lived up to my expectations. Taught and scary and really suspenseful. Highly recommended xxx |
Thank you Netgalley and amazon publishing Uk for this arc. The plot, twists and action of the story is good, I’m a bit confused with some of the characters but was able to piece them together at some point. The transitions and jump may have been a little excessive because I have to go back and reread a couple of chapters. But Overall, its alright. |
This books was entertaining and the plot also moved along at a steady pace. However, there were to many evil-doers in one village! Not only was this unbelievable, but at times I was confused which character was associated with which bad deed. To much going on within the plot at the expense of some character developing. |
Truthfully this wasn’t for me. Safe No Longer sounds like my usual style of book but I just found myself repeating the same paragraph over and over. I had no want to finish this story which is NOT my usual style. Don’t get me wrong there’s not any obvious issues with the book, we just didn’t connect. |
I always feel terrible leaving an unfavorable review on an ARC, but it is honest, so here goes... This was one of my least favorite books, ever. It was chock-full of unlikable (and mostly downright despicable) characters who commit gruesome atrocities and mostly avoid any real justice, throughout. I wasn't rooting for anyone. I wasn't even that interested in any of the characters, in general. They were all incredibly one dimensional and messed up. There were also TOO many skeletons in (ALL) of the closets, I ran out of shock by about 25% in. And the "twist" at the end was a letdown, as well. It was neither shocking nor satisfying. An ending doesn't have to be happy for me, but it does have to leave me with SOME feeling, of any kind. I just closed this book and shrugged. No further thought, no further questions and not much else to say about it. So sorry to the author who I'm sure worked quite hard on this. I always feel so depressed about having to leave poor reviews on ARCs. That said, thank you to #netgalley and the publisher for sending me an advance copy in exchange for my honest review. |
For me this book wasn't very interesting. I could predict what was going to happen. Which shows that this book was very predicable. |

Police thriller which started well but gradually became more cluttered. Very ,chilling ending. Characters did not endear themselves to me. |
I didn't actually DNF this book, but I did find I had to skim through a lot of things because it was just "ok". The subject matter was extremely entertaining, and had it been written in a way that the reader could keep up, I think it would have been a four star novel quite easily. The plot is dark, and deals with a lot of trigger-warning topics. It was hard to digest some of it, but that doesn't make it a bad story, just wish it had been more developed. The problem I have with this book is the jumping through plot sequences, and the timeline, and not allowing the reader to connect with the characters in play. I felt like I wasn't able to get to know who I was reading about. Its like you have this fabulous story, but you're too excited to tell us efficiently what the book is about. It was way too jumpy for my taste. I have to give this two stars based on my rating system. * Thank you to Netgalley, The Publisher, and Gayle Curtis for providing me with a free copy in exchange of my honest review. |
I found this book to be just OK. There was an awful lot going on and one village seemed to be full of dreadful people. There were no sympathetic characters at all apart from maybe poor dead Raymond. There were a few times I was unsure whether I wanted to keep reading as I didn't feel particularly connected to any of the characters but there was something about the story that made me keep going as I was interested to see how all the threads were going to come together. I mostly liked the ending as the majority of the questions raised in the book were answered, but I'm still left mystified by a few points (such as if Jason was supposed to be good, why did he go along with Rachel's original kidnapping plan or was that a set up or?!?!) Overall I probably wouldn't go out of my way to recommend this one, but it wasn't bad. |
This book was okay but not great. I’ve been lucky enough to have a good spell of gripping thrillers recently, so maybe my expectations were too high. It was just lacking something for me and was a bit too predictable, I also thought the storyline was too unoriginal. A real shame but I can’t award it more than 2.5 stars. |

3.5 stars It took me a litte while to settle into this book, the skipping backwards and forward in timeline threw me. Also,I might have blinked and missed the moment they put an age to the kids... I struggled to picture them properly until that was done. Apart from that,it was great. Or as great as it can be when dealing with peodophiles, violence, psychotic teenagers.. Nobody was quite who I thought they we're,and so there were twists a plenty throughout the whole book. Building to an ending I didn't quite see coming,it was definitely an entertaining read. |

Thank you NetGalley for this advanced copy. I'm not sure what I think about this book. I liked how it went back and forth from now to five years. There were a lot of characters that were tied together and at times were confusing. The plot is a little disturbing, but unfortunately a very real problem in the world today. Not all that impressed with the ending, but a quick and easy read. |

Love the cover! At first I was getting all the characters confused with each other, but ended up loving the back and forth aspect of the book. Definitely parts of this book were disturbing with the plot, but it was nicely woven together. Quick and easy read. |
DI Rita Cannan hopes to find lost camper Cara alive. Her partner Raymond has already been found……dead. There appears to be a connection to the murder of a young girl years earlier, can Rita connect the dots before another woman is killed? A solid British police procedural with a likable, intelligent heroine |
