Thank you Net Galley. An exciting read from Ms. Mistry with an unusual plotting and plenty of suspense. It kept me glued to the book till the end. |

Loved this book. Liz has written a really gripping read. It is great seeing the characters developing, especially Nikki, this book links back to events and characters in the first of the series, which I have not read YET. The story line is topical and, traumatic to read, but it makes you feel both empathy and anger at the horrendous experiences suffered by victims of human trafficking . I am looking forward to the next one. |

Many good things to report about this book - plot and pacing were very good. Kudos to the author, Liz Mistry, for incorporating serious, current-event concerns. However, the characters were closer to caricatures -- good-guy, bad-guy, with little complexity. About those current-event themes, they struck me as a kind of checklist of political correctness, a thumb in the eye of the white male heterosexual patriarchy. Hey, I'm already there, but I like a little nuance now and then. It might have helped had I read Last Request, the first book in the series featuring Detective Sergeant Nikki Parekh, of the Bradford police in England. In fact, I felt lost early on reading Broken Silence, so I looked for plot summaries of the earlier book, hoping to fill in some blanks. All in all, a mixed bag. Thanks to NetGalley and HQ digital for an advance readers copy. |
No matter how hard I tried, I just couldn’t get into this book and actually even struggled to finish it. I’m definitely in the minority here as I saw it has great reviews for the most part. Thank you so much to Netgalley and HQ digital for the advanced copy in exchange for my honest review! |

This one is action from the word go and it never slows down. This is a story of human trafficking, slavery prostitution and terrible acts of torture. In the previous book we discovered that there was no love lost between DS Felicity Springer and DS Nikki Parekh, though when Springer goes missing after attending a conference Nikki does not let her personal feelings deter her from doing everything possible to find Springer. After calling in an incident, the vehicle directly infront of her seemed to have a hand waving through its rear light .She has vanished into thin air, her car abandoned and covered in blood. The clock is ticking, as time passes the less likelyhood they have of finding Springer alive. Nikki assisted by her partner Sajid discover there is a lot more than an isolated abduction going on. Things take a darker and dangerous turn as bodies start to turn up and links to a villian no one seems to know present themselves. This is an exciting thriller that grabbed me from the beginning a worthy 5* can`t wait to read the next instalment in the DS Nikita Parekh series. Hope its not too long a wait. Thanks to Netgalley and HQ Digital. |

Great crime thriller. Doesn't short change on characters or action. The book deals with a number of hideous current issues which permeate all levels of current society in all countries across the world. Human trafficking, prostitution of underage girls and boys, human slavery and drugs. All of these criminal activities and their perpetrators come into this book. However, although gritty, with lots of carnage, Liz Mistry has woven humanity and light hearted characters and situations into the story which brings some relief to the main theme. She tackles the issue of homosexuality in the Muslim community and in the police force in a realistic way. As usual there are many bosses vying for top spot, worrying about their careers and providing twists to the narrative. Who is Mr Big here? Liz keeps it close to her chest right through to the end and keeps you guessing along the way. Great book. It kept me reading happily all the way through. |
Really enjoyed this book the story was great. It was tense and exciting This is my first book by this author and it won’t be the last! Looking forward to the next one in the series. |
A gripping read. What the traffiked victims go through is quite an ordeal. This book is a real page turner. I loved it. |
Broken Silence is a very dark and gritty, urban, police procedural story that packs a punch. The main plot of human trafficking is very interesting and the subplot of the missing police officer adds a good dimension to the story. The further subplots regarding the characters personal lives and interaction with each other really adds to the story, giving it some depth. It is a story that will definitely keep your interest, forcing you to turn page after page, all whilst keeping the tension and thrills at a very good pace. The characters are engaging and well-written (especially the up and coming crime boss) and the story as a whole is gripping right from the very start to the very end. With a few different strands of investigation going on, it could be easy to lose track of the story but Liz Mistry has managed to write in a well thought-out way so this does not happen. Broken Silence by Liz Mistry is an action-packed thriller grabs hold and doesn’t let go, with plenty of twists and turns along the way. I would recommend reading Last Request first, but if you can’t it won’t impact too much on this story. |
The tables are turned in this second part of the DS Nikki Parekh series, both of which can be read as standalone crime reads. Where DS Springer was very much the enemy in Last Request and almost obsessively determined to bring Parekh to heel and perhaps even destroy her career - this time it is up to Parekh to find and if possible save Springer. It's almost ironic how Springer starts to make choices based on what she thinks Parekh might do in a similar situation. The other woman, the colleague she has treated with disdain becomes the person to emulate. Strength, determination and an incalculable will to survive the ordeal are what keep Stringer fighting. If she survives, will it change the way she perceives and interacts with Parekh? It's an urban crime read with a fresh gritty feel. The main characters says what she feels and sometimes she feels like she doesn't give two monkeys about a woman who tried to destroy her, but now needs her help. Mistry mixes modern crime with the challenges of gender inequality in the police force. The treatment of those who don't fit into the men's club idea of what a cop should be, and the women who help to perpetuate the problem. Acting like one of the boys doesn't mean you are one. I have to say kudos to the sub-plot that flows subtly along with the main one. The indifference, the shame, the audacity of the event and the way each individual responds to it was an interesting way to solidify certain points. |
Detective Felicity Springer can't wait to leave the Conference. Suspecting that she might be over the drink/drive limit she chooses the smaller roads to go home. She notices something odd about the white van she is following. Someone has knocked out the back light & a hand is waving at her. She calls it in, although the number plate is obscured. He phone falls to the floor & she crashes. When the police find the car there is blood & no sigh of Felicity. DS Parekh doesn't like Felicity but that doesn't stop her doing her best to find her. Bradford is a city with lots of crime. There have been lots of rumours of people trafficking & a young girl's body thrown out of a car in an upmarket suburban area seems to point to this. Nikki & her partner Saj are kept on their toes. The accounts of the folk imprisoned was horrifying. There were many strands to this story but they were well woven together. The characters were engaging- if a bit larger than life at times. I missed the first book in this series. It might have been useful to have read it as events are mentioned & have some bearing on the story, but not enough to stop this being a good 'stand-alone'. That having been said I will be looking out for the next in the series. Thanks to Netgalley & the publisher for letting me read & review this book. |

I really enjoyed this book. Set in Bradford, police officer Nikki Parekh is juggling being a mum of 3 with a demanding job. When a colleague goes missing after following a suspicious vehicle, the team are pulled in to a world of people trafficking and modern day slavery. This is a real page turner which will keep you guessing til the end. Thanks to NetGalley for a preview copy. Copied to Goodreads. |
This was a very difficult story to read at the beginning but as the police case started making progress it became easier. Lots of descriptions which were upsetting to read but within the concept of the story, necessary. I like the way the story developed and there were some really good characters. Great conclusion. It is difficult at times to understand Mans inhumanity to Man. |
A fast-paced 'seat of your pants' thriller that gets off to an explosive start - those explosions keep on coming right to the end. Dark and gritty in places, I loved the interplay between the detectives. This is the first book I've read by this author. Not the last. |

Thanks Netgalley and the Publisher. I really like this author and this book did not disappoint, fast paced, page turning thriller that will have you hooked all the way through. |
I’ve just finished the last chapter of this high speed ride of a book and feel absolutely exhausted! I feel as if I was there in Bradford, chasing all the leads and the bad guys, hoping that the victims would pull through and the good guys will win the day. What a great cast of characters and a well researched plot. I’m already looking forward to reading the next one! A well deserved five stars (but such a shame the dates chosen for the action were during Covid 19 lockdown). |

Broken Silence is the second novel in the DS Nikki Parekh series of books. Written by the lady who must have the best and appropriate name in crime fiction, Liz Mistry, it’s another gritty northern fiction book. The world Nikki inhabits is no picnic. More Taggert in style than Frost, this series is becoming to come to life. The book starts in an explosive fashion with a rape coupled with a shooting and abduction of a police officer. DS Springer is not Nikki’s favourite person in the world. in fact she’d be near the bottom of the list. Yet her duty comes first, and she puts aside her feeling to find her. As ever she’s assisted by her sidekick Saj. Their partnership is one of the cornerstones of the series. When you start a book with such ferocity, you have to follow it with action. This book has it in spades. Body after body is found. Tortured, then murdered Nikki and Saj soon realise something is happening in their beloved Bradford and it’s not nice. Broken Silence is not a novel for the faint-hearted. I really enjoyed this book. The series comes alive with this story of human trafficking. Nikki isn’t the perfect person, in fact she can be downright terrible, yet there’s a spark that keeps you rooting for her. The way she puts aside her personal feelings to help Springer and her family is a case in point. I was afraid that after the start this book would lose pace, yet it didn’t happen (thank god). All through the book you’re led around the gritty streets of Bradford, from one dead body to another. Each event making you turn those pages until you get to the end, and what an end it is. One that will have consequences for Nikki’s family. I can’t recommend this book enough. As crime fiction goes, this is at the pinnacle. Liz Mistry has produced a book where that magical thing happens, the pages turn themselves. Can’t wait to see what the next will bring. |

I love this story about illegal worker come to Bradford from Romania. There are some shocking scenes. Nikki's and Saj chemistry grew in confidence. The only downside was the ending was a little flat. A strong 4 stars. |
Broken Silence is the second in a series by accomplished crime writer Liz Mistry featuring DS Nikita Parekh (Nikki). Having read the first book, Last Request last year, I was thrilled to discover that this one was due to be published so I jumped at the opportunity to read it! In this latest instalment, DS Felicity Springer has left a conference early and is driving home when she notices something strange. In the vehicle directly in front of her, a hand has been pushed through it's rear light and is waving, trying to attract her attention. Felicity calls the job in but whilst on the phone, she loses control of the car on the icy road, crashing straight into the van ahead. When Nikki and her work partner, DC Sajid Malik race to the scene to help their colleague, Felicity has vanished into thin air... The author's descriptions of multicultural Bradford were fascinating and the pacing was spot on. There was always plenty going on and there was certainly never a dull moment. Liz Mistry, a seasoned crime writer, clearly knows how to write a story that is compelling, entertaining and all-consuming, with characters that are perfectly drawn. I have really taken a liking to Nikki who is feisty, bold, vulnerable and flawed, yet always real. Nikki's partner-in-crime, DC Sajid Malik, has also left an impression on me; he is caring, straight-talking and protective; a gay man who has a problematic life. I really appreciated the amicability between Nikki and Sajid. All of the characters had a great part to play, whether or not they were likeable. Although Nikki was the main protagonist, I loved that some of the chapters were written from the killer's perspective, as this allowed the reader a glimpse into ever darkening minds. Liz Mistry delivered an unrestrained and exuberant story of drama in this clever police procedural - a toxic concoction of harboured secrets, menace, and evil. Taut and compelling, it was a cracking story and a book that I revelled in all the way through. It brought no disappointments and the clever plotting enabled me to fully grasp the situation and motivations of the protagonists. The masterful twists paved the way for an enthralling denouement. I can't wait to see what is store for DS Nikki Parekh next and I am delighted to recommend Broken Silence. I received a complimentary copy of this novel from HQ Digital via NetGalley at my request and this review is my own unbiased opinion. |

What a fantastic 5* read. This book had me hooked and I could not put it down until I had finished it! THis is the second installment of Nikki Parekh and I love how the characters are developing. We understand more about Nikki and her partner as the stories develop. This book deals with exploitation and people trafficking so is not an easy read but it was fast paced and engaging with so much going on and lots of twists and turns. Cannot wait for the next in the series! |
