Insightful read of an inmate on day release and the friendship he builds with a woman on his way to work. Interesting and immersive.

I really liked how this book was written and I found the prison aspects fascinating! The storyline is good and something completely different from what I have read before - I love that and found it really engaging.

This was quite a immersive read and I wanted to keep reading to see what would happen - I loved the deceit!!

Rob is coming to the end of his sentence for manslaughter so he’s been transferred to the open section of Brixton prison. Every weekday he leaves the prison and walks down the hill to his volunteer job in a charity shop where he spends the day sorting through the donations in the back room. One day the monotony of this routine is broken when he nearly collides into a woman who has fallen down in front of him and after helping her up they strike up a brief conversation. Rob sees her again the next morning, and the next until she becomes part of his daily walk to work. But is she really all that she claims to be? And what does she want from him?

I really liked this book. It is told from two prospectives which gives the reader a good sense of the unfolding story. The plot blooms seamlessly into a story that holds your attention making it hard to put down even though there were moments when I absolutely needed to otherwise my dogs would have starved! In short, this is a very well thought out, very well presented novel that I feel most readers enjoy.

Many thanks to the publishers and NetGalley for allowing me to read this book in exchange for my unbiased review.

Brixton Hill is a satisfyingly simple but profound story that I enjoyed immensely. The prose was immersive, the characterisation was great and the plotting was deft and entirely realistic. A very talented author to look out for.

This story centres around Rob who’s on day release from prison and working in a charity shop in the months leading up to his release. On his walks to the charity shop he meets an attractive woman, Steph. However, this isn’t a chance encounter and they keep meeting every day. I didn’t warm to Steph and always felt she had an ulterior motive for meeting Rob.

Initially, I quite liked Rob’s character but by the end of the story I’d gone off him. His likeable, good guy persona quickly disappears towards the end of the book. As a result, I didn’t really like any of the characters by the end.

Each chapter is told from either Rob or Steph’s point of view. I did feel sorry for Steph as she seems trapped in a controlling marriage and is trying to do the best for her autistic son.

I found the book easy enough to read and it didn’t take me very long to get through it. It’s quite slow paced and is more an exploration of how Rob is dealing with his taste of the outside world in preparation for his release. It also explores the relationship between Steph and Rob.

The story doesn’t really get going until the last 15% or so, when connections between characters are revealed and no one is as innocent as they seem.

I thought some parts of the story didn’t quite add up, particularly the very end. The choices some of the characters made were questionable and sometimes a bit unrealistic.

Overall, this book was alright and I appreciate the author put a lot of effort into researching prison life. For me, it was a bit slow paced with a disappointing ending.

Thanks to Little, Brown Book Group UK and NetGalley for a copy for review.

I liked this one, Had a well written plot and kept me engaged from page one, the characters were well thought out and relatable, I didn’t guess the twist, and was reading well into the night. Can't wait to see what the author brings out next, would recommend for sure.

Thank you 🙏 Lottie Moggach for sharing your personal experiences of the life of a prisoner, when someone close was convicted for 5 years, to develop this awesome piece of work. You sure know how to tell a story.

I LOVED this! Brixton Hill is a well thought out plot and gets a solid 5🌟from me.

As you can imagine, having personal experience, this accurately portrays the daily life of a prisoner. The key character in this novel is nearing the end of his sentence and is preparing for his release.

Rob was convicted of manslaughter following a punch that sadly killed the victim. 7 years and nearly at the end of his sentence; as part of his programme he is allowed day release to help rebuild his life back out on the street. He uses this time to volunteer at a charity shop, sorting through donations in the back room. Carl his manager is quite offensive, however Rob deals with his attitude admirably.

There are a few tense moments as the story unfolds and I found myself holding my breath on a few occasions.

A mystery woman falls over in front of him when he’s walking to work, who he helps, named Steph. As you can imagine, Rob looks out for her from then on and they become friends. However, all is not what it seems. Things are never quite that simple now are they?

This is a compulsive, complex and gripping read from the moment you pick it up until the very end. Moggach creates well developed characters, goes into the detail and the menacing atmosphere she creates keeps you on the edge of your seat most of the time.

Charming drama, great story, FANTASTIC finish and a fabulous read. I have no hesitation in recommending Brixton Hill buy it now you won’t be disappointed..

Took me a while to get into this one. I found the story a little slow to start with. Its worth reading though as the book starts to pick up and becomes a tense and interesting read.

I really enjoyed this book. Despite the story and setting sounding like a ' heavy' read, it wasn't. Informative regarding the day to day, year to year life of a prisoner and the social interactions, family, others incarcerated or padmates. The actual story came second over the descriptive account of prison life. Well worth reading if you have an interest in the subject. I actually enjoyed it so much that I then listened to the BBC abridged radio version and of course the book wins hands down.

Thoroughly enjoyed this book. Not only a great read but also provides an insight into prison life from the personal perspective of someone approaching their chance at parole and preparing to re-enter society. The story was so gripping that I could not stop reading it and finished it within 2 days. Highly recommended.

For me this was an ok read I expected more from Rob who jeopardized his freedom after so many years I was disappointed in him.

I thought I would really enjoy this book but the first three quarters of the book is like ready a bland prison diary in which nothing much happens. Then there's a tiny twist and the story doesn't get much better.

By the time I was interested in what was going to happen with the characters the book was finished leaving several unanswered questions.

I received a copy of this kindle book thanks to net galley and the publisher for an honest review. It did not sound like my usual type of crime or thriller book but it sounded very interesting so I thought I would give it a go.
It focuses on Rob who is in his final time at Brixton prison and has a day release job and Steph who he bumps into literally on the street. The characters and the tangled web of the story and underlying lies was very interesting. When halfway through I needed to keep reading to find out what was going to happen. I liked the last few chapters and the ending did not disappoint. I would recommend this for a good read

I received an advanced reading copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. Thank you to NetGalley, Little, Brown Book Group, and the author Lottie Moggach.
I was intrigued to read this book as I live very close to Brixton prison, and I enjoyed the recognisable references to the area in which I live. Apart from that, unfortunately there isn't really much more of note.
The last few pages were entertaining, as you are given more information and the story is wrapped up, but everything up at the point was pretty dry, and a little dull.
An interesting premise, but in the end, only 'ok'. 2 stars.
