I love being back in this world! It has been some time since I read courting darkness so it took a while to figure out who some people were and what was going on, but as I was reading it started coming back to me piece by piece. This is only about 10 chapters or so and all I can say is that I need the full book. I need to know what’s going to happen to my characters! This was great and I can’t wait to order myself the full copy when i can |
I had no idea before requesting this book that it was a sampler. Needless to say I will be reading the whole book before I rate it. But it sure is interesting and I am invested in the characters. Lets see how this story unfolds. 3 stars. |
Samplers never give us enough!! But I will be continuing!! I enjoyed listening to courting darkness so I was excited about this one. I really enjoyed it! |
The sampler was enough to get me to pick up and or get through reading the rest of the books in the His Fair Assassin series, and start this new story set in this world. |
This sampler thoroughly whets the appetite for this exciting second instalment of the His Fair Assassin Duology. LaFevers is one of the best at crafting believable and reality-inspired historical fantasy novels and this is just as tense, emotionally-resonant and gripping as Counting Darkness turned out to be. Looking forward to devouring the entire story! |
Pretty writing with a nice flow but it didn't manage to snare my attention enough to look further into the series. |

I'm a big fan of this series, so maybe I'm biased, but this was a great way to whet the appetite for the newest book. I would agree with another review that samplers are never long enough! It might be overwhelming for anyone who isn't familiar with the ongoing series and, to be honest, I had to pause and think about things. Otherwise, a great read and a good way to see if you like LaFevers' writing. |
This was only a sample, but the first few chapters were kind of interesting. The writing seemed a bit overly flowery, but it was still readable. I haven't read the first book yet, so it was a bit difficult to understand the characters and plot. Overall, I was kind of indifferent about this sample, so 3 stars. |
Samplers are NEVER long enough! But this gives us a glimpse into the book and that's enough for me, for now... |
The plot picks up straight away and the conspiracies are even more complex than in the previous book. It really is almost as if you’ve merely turned the page onto a new chapter. LaFevers continues to prove herself a master court intrigue. One warning though, So many names and hidden agendas are present that it might be a good idea to reread or at least skim the previous volume. |
Maraud awakes to the sound of someone getting sick .The sounds are coming from him. It's believed Someone tried to poison Maraud. I like the names Valine and Tassin. Maraud is tied to his saddle. Genievieve believes ever moment and action counts. It's painful to think of Maraud for Genievieve. I really liked Genievieve and the preview. |

I've read the trilogy and the first book in this duology, so I'm very familiar with the world. Not much to say about this as it was just a sample, but I"m excited to read the rest of the book. As a history professor, I often get irritated with historical fiction because it's so far removed from what we know of the past. These books do a great job of mixing fantasy with history, and the historical part is well done. |
I loved this sampler! I can't wait to get the full book when it is released! I absolutely love this author and all of the books in this world. They're filled with such strong female characters and fun adventures. |
So enjoyed this sampler and can’t wait for this to be available, have it preordered so not long to go now. As it’s only the first few chapters not much I can comment on other than it’s exciting, well written as always and now I need to know what happens next. |

Seeing as this is just a sampler I won't leave a long review. Courting Darkness was the first book I read by this author. I met her and received a signed arc of it at YALLFest a couple years ago. I went out and bought the prequel series as soon as I was done reading Courting Darkness. The premise is so unique and fascinating. I cannot wait for Igniting Darkness to release! |

I can't really review this book as it's only the first several chapters (a sampler), not the actual book, but I can say that it is just as gripping as the previous titles in the series. I almost wish I hadn't requested this as now I'm desperate to read more and, of course, the only thing to do is wait. In my defense I thought I had requested the book (not the sampler). I highly recommend this series, though, and will certainly be recommending purchase of this title to my library. Robin LaFevers is a master of characterization and her medieval settings are so realistic you really forget about the magical aspect until it happens and surprises you all over again. |
Exciting to get to read the start of the continuation of this pair, however I was not under the impression that this was only a sample when added. I struggle to review due to partial content. It definitely shows promise. |
This small sampler was not enough! I am VERY MUCH looking forward to reading the whole book when it comes out! I love Sybella, and I can’t wait to read the conclusion to this duology. Thank you for the short piece to read in advance! |

I am devastated that this is only a sample of the novel. I can’t wait for the full novel in August. As always Robin La Fevers doesn’t disappoint, picking up where the previous novel left off. I was so excited to start it and continue this multilayered plot.. I love Sybella and Beast in particularly, but am also intersted to see where the new characters take the story. I love the tension created and feel every emotion with our characters. I love that this is part fantasy, part history; my favourite k8nd of novel. Please release the full novel soon. |
I really enjoyed this sample and I ready to read the full novel. Put this book into my hands now please. Don't make me wait much longer. |
