Thanks to the author and NetGalley for giving me the opportunity to read an excerpt of Igniting Darkness! This excerpt picks up right where the last book left off. Genevieve has been reunited with the convent and now must face the consequences of the choices she’s made. Beast and Sybella’s sisters are on the run while Sybella stalls for time. Robin’s writing remains crisp, descriptive and compelling. Love these characters and I'm so excited to see more of them. I can’t wait to read this book! |
Igniting Darkness immediately picks up where Courting Darkness left off -- plunging the reader into political intrigue and the lives of the Assassins of St. Mortain. Genevieve has made a mistake in revealing the true nature of the initiates of the Convent of St. Mortain to the French king, endangering Sybella, her sisters, and the tenuous union with the Duchess of Brittany. With the French regent looking for any way to discredit the Duchess and consolidate power, Sybella and Genevieve must find a way to protect themselves and their queen. LaFevers does not disappoint as she drops the reader back into the thick of the plot. Her carefully crafted political intrigue matched with beautifully dark insight into the thoughts and souls of her characters, Igniting Darkness shapes up to be the perfect conclusion to the Courting Darkness and His Fair Assassins story arcs. |
I should state now that I have not read any book by Robin LaFevers before, though after reading this sampler that is twelve chapters long - well, a prologue and then the first eleven chapters - I am intrigued to know more about this author, this world she's created, and about this series as a whole just so I can continue on reading this book. It's clear immediately that Igniting Darkness isn't the first book of a series, nor is it a standalone, but it really was an interesting start to a story; it's a historical novel that I believe has elements of fantasy to it (given what happens at the very end of this sampler which is very much not "normal"), and it also has a lot of political talk, suspense, and misdirection. It was really enjoyable, despite the fact I felt lost because this story just STARTS as its clearly picking up from where another book left off (which is the only reason why I'm rating this sampler three stars), but it was still enough to leave me intrigued to know what this world is all about, especially since the women in this story are assassins; now THAT sounds like my kind of book! |
I love this author and she seem to be underrated and so has this series of books I can't wait for the this book to come out as it's been too long since we have been deep within this world and I live the history in her books. This is going to be another action filled book I can feel like |
Enjoyable and gripping! The world-building is fascinating and I can't wait to read more when the book comes out! |
Absolutely loved this! It leaves you wanting more. Can't wait for this sequel to hit the shelves. Courting Darkness was perfect for me as a Game of Thrones fan and I think Igniting Darkness is going to raise the bar even further. |
This is the type of sampler that leaves the reader wishing for a closer release date.. I will always advocate for more books in His Fair Assassin`s world. The characters are always strong willed and teach little lessons in every chapter. Thank you for the opportunity to read this sampler. I would love a chance to review the full book and interview Mrs. LaFevers. |
I really enjoyed this sample and cannot wait to read the full story. I love this series and all the characters, |

Being new to this series I felt a little lost in the plot, but having read this sampler led me to purchase the first book. Robin LaFever Has written an intriguing fantasy and I am excited to read the finished product once this is released. |
The sampler was such an enjoyable read and a wonderful introduction to the final book in the Courting Darkness duology. It sets the scene and is a very enticing build up to what promises to be a thrilling and compelling story. I haven’t read the previous novel, so I’ll admit I was slightly overwhelmed at first with the vast cast of characters, sorting out who they all were and how they fitted into the story, as well as coming to terms with the political manoeuvring and the complexities of the French court. I would imagine had you read the first book this would fall into place much more easily. However, the writing style is very good and easy to understand and this helped tremendously. The chapters I read are based mainly around the French court, but I also really enjoyed reading the scenes located outside of the court following the characters, Maraud and Aeva, two fascinating individuals who I hope we see more of. There are two very strong female protagonists, Sybella and Geneieve, both are extremely interesting and intriguing characters and I look forward to learning more about them, particularly in their role as assassins, as the novel progresses. A great sample read, however ideally I would have liked to have read the full version in order to write a more comprehensive review. Thank you Netgalley and the publisher for this advance sampler. |
I loved this little sampler and I can’t wait to read the entire book! Robin Lafevers is a goddess and she knows how to do fantasy and romance so well! |
This seems like a very promising start to book two in the Courting Darkness series. I have not read book one but I would be more than happy to after reading the sampler for book two. I look forward to the release so that I can see what happens next. Many thanks to NetGalley for the sampler |
As usual with this series, Robin LaFevers writes a compelling story with intriguing characters. Sadly this is only an excerpt, but I can't wait for the full book once it gets released - I've been devouring these ever since the very first one came out years ago. |
This book has got everything that can intrigue me and leave me wanting more and more on a continuous basis. The story is about Sybella, who is alone in protector to the Duchess of Brittany, after sending her sister's off to protection with Beast. Sybella is an assassin and a spy (I mean yay, amazing!!!) trained in the church in the art of death. (can it be more amazing) . Here in the French Court, she meets Genevieve a fellow member of the convent of Saint Mortain, who has been left alone to think that the convent is disbanded and her sisters are forced to marry. The sampler is about 100 pages, but I am so hooked on the lives of these people, that I am craving more and more on a continuous basis. Please send me more, I really can't wait till June, which is evidently expected release date of the book. . Thanks for the review sampler Net Galley |
Picking up where Courting Darkness left off, Sybella and Genevieve must find their way out of the mess they both find themselves in. Promising just as much intrigue as the first volume, I absolutely can't wait for the full book to be released! |

So far, I am really enjoying this book. I have not read the first book in the series yet, but I can guarantee that I will enjoy both of these books. Both of the girls we are introduced to in the first few chapters are obviously very cunning, and have lots of secrets they keep from others. I have read too many books where the female lead is boring, or is only interested in romance. I am always looking for interesting main characters, and both of the ladies I met in this book seem to fit that role well. I like how the king seems to be a reasonable man, rather than a bumbling idiot or a mad tyrant. He seems to have a depth that is not usually given to royalty figures that aren’t the protagonist. I also really enjoyed the formatting of the first page of each chapter, which really helped to give the book a historical feel. I am very intrigued to see how the author handles the historical details of France as the book goes on (and the first book as well). I am definitely going to be picking up a copy of both the first book, and the second book when I can! I think this is going to be a series that I really enjoy! Thank you for the opportunity to read this excerpt. |
A very promising start to the second book in the Courting Darkness duology. I’ve been waiting with baited breath for this book ever since Genevieve dropped Sybella in it at the end of book one, leaving the reader on tenterhooks. This sampler takes us right back to the immediate repercussions of that moment, and what follows is more of the fascinating palace intrigue and stately machinations I’ve come to expect from the ladies of the convent. What was included in the sampler feels promising, and presages an excellent conclusion to the duology. I’m eager to read the rest. |
Unfortunately it was not made clear that this was a sample when I downloaded it. However that being said, the sample was good and I cant wait for the book to actually come out! |
Freaking amazing again. Seriously, these characters and this world just suck you right in. I cant Wait to get completely wrapped up in the rest of this book. This teaser was not enough. I must Have more. I cant wait to see how this story will end. |
I've recently read the first book in this duology, Courting Darkness, and loved it. A few years ago, I also read the His Fair Assassin trilogy, of which this is a sort-of spinoff. This sample picked up right where Courting Darkness ended and it immediately made my heart pound. The stakes are incredibly high in this sequel and if the entire book is this fast-paced, we're in for a wild, adrenaline-filled journey! I also loved the two small POV chapters for Maraud, who I hope to see more of in this book! |
