The title got me, the cover got me and the stories and illustrations had me hooked. This book is brilliant. Perfect for story lovers, but if you've always loved myths and legends like me you really need this book. Each story is beautifully retold and the images are so rich and wonderful that you languish over each spread. Although a children's book, this would be a great present for adults too. I was given an electronic review copy of this book, however, I loved it so much I bought a physical copy - it's exquisite! I just reviewed Mythopedia by Good Wives and Warriors. Thanks Netgalley and publisher for the electronic review copy. #Mythopedia #NetGalley |
Beautiful, beautiful, BEAUTIFUL. The illustrations are PHENOMENAL, and I want it, oh my god. The stories are well-chosen and culturally diverse, some of them charming, others a little disturbing, all of them colourful and surprising. I love that it has multiple creation myths, too. 10000% recommend this for anyone who loves beautiful books, or mythology books. I’m not actually sure what age range this is aimed at, but I feel like it could be appreciated by any age. Because colour! And short stories! And pretty! |
People looking for a break from reading your regular fantasy reads should read this! This book has amazing illustrations and information about many mythological creatures. The illustrations were so good🤩 ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐/5 stars! Thanks to Laurence King Publishing Ltd for providing me with the e-ARC of this book. |
I loved this! The illustrations were gorgeous. I've always been a fan of mythology and I loved that this didn't just focus on the typical mythological beings that you tend to think of. If you're looking for a quick beautiful and pretty cool read, definitely pick this up. |
Mythopedia by Good Wives & Warriors is a free NetGalley ebook that I read in late September. A friggin’ beautiful and vividly colorful resource sorted by country of origin. Sheesh, and to think that I would only be using this for D&D to summon or morph into something cool, but, no, each entry had to be its own work of art. |

This is a beautifully presented book covering a range of myths from across the world. I really liked how it is set up geographically, covering different continents. It shows you a mythical creature and then gives you the story that goes alongside. The illustrations are beautiful throughout. I will certainly be purchasing this book to use in school. A lovely book. |

This is a great book about myths and mythological creatures. It covers myths across many different cultures. The illustrations are fantastically rendered. The way the book is set up is it talks about mythological creatures and, after every few creatures, will relate the story of the creature that was just explained. It is a great way to learn about these fictional creatures from around the world. I think it does a great job keeping the reader engaged. |
Mythopedia is a collection of myths and creatures from all around the world . Organized in continents Mythopedia is a fun way to learn about beliefs and stories of other countries. Amazing illustrations decorate the stories giving the reader a more small glimpse of those cultures. If you like myths and learning i would highly recommend this books. |
A great album! I loved the variety of myths presented in this book: many of them are little known to the general public and I even made a few discoveries. Whether in terms of characters or of cultures represented, the choice's wide and the small descriptions/presentations are quite comprehensive. Regularly, in addition to these inserts, we find the story of the legend in question, which makes you even more interested in documenting the region from which the myth originated. Graphically, it's a crush: pages overloaded with small details and bright colors, the whole serves the story well and makes you want to spend a long time on the pages, to find all the elements of the story hidden in the drawings. In short, it's a crush, which I regret not having in physics and which I hope will one day be translated into French (my native language)! ^^ |
Mythopedia is filled with beautiful illustrations that are easy to read and understand for all ages. I really enjoyed all the information and learning new information. Highly recommend for anyone that loves myths. |
*Thanks to NetGalley and the publishers for providing me with a complimentary eARC for review purposes* This is a wonderful starting point to find out more about the mythology that isn't usually in the spotlight. Having them divided by region is also really nice as you can see how similar the different regions are. The illustrations in this book are beautifully detailed and coloured and at times a little creepy. |
This is one of the most beautiful books I've ever seen. I heard, before I ever requested it, that the illustrations were insane, and quite frankly, that's the reason I wanted to read it. My nephew and I have talked a little bit about mythology, mostly just the basic Greek guys. And I want him to learn all the interesting mythological creatures, and figured, "Oh, well, this will be perfect, because pretty pictures." He and I spent an EXTREMELY long time looking at each image in this book, and finding all the different features. Sadly, I was far too incompetent to pronounce most of them, but since I plan to get a physical copy of this, we have plenty of time to learn. Besides the illustrations, I adore that the creatures are divided by region. You can learn about mythological beings from the Americas, Europe, Asia, Africa. There's no small amount of things to learn and did I mention gorgeous creatures to see? Love this. So hard. |

This book is wonderful. The art work is amazing, it is bright, and colourful and I love the style of it so much. I love learning about different mythologies and this book has a wonderful mix of short explanations of different figures in mythology and tales and stories of the mythology. I now want a longer book for each of the different continents, so that it can have even more stories and expand further on the different tales. I feel like each page could be put up on the wall as a piece of art it's so beautiful, and I will be obtaining a copy of this book so that I can put it on my shelves. Though it is targeted as a children's middle grade book, I think this would a be a good starting point for all ages that want to learn more about different mythologies across the globe. |

The colors and illustrations were spectacular! This is such a cool collection of different mythological creatures. I like how they broke it down into different regions of the world. The inclusion of the little short tales that accompanied some of the creature introductions was great. This would be a good book for children interested in learning the different mythologies. You could easily work this into a bedtime routine and read a few of these a night. I was familiar with some of the creatures; Anansi, Pegasus, Fenrir, Anubis, Bastet, Kraken. . . .to name a few, but there were many others that I had never heard of. This is a beautiful and interesting collection of mythical beasts. The hardcover version would be a nice addition for the bookshelf! |
Book Review: Mythopedia: An Encyclopedia of Mythical Beasts and Their Magical Tales I am not sure how I stumbled on Mythopedia: An Encyclopedia of Mythical Beasts and Their Magical Tales at NetGalley but I am glad I did. I was able to get a digital review copy of the hardback book that will be published on Tuesday. What is Mythopedia? From the West African fable of Anansi the Spider, to Michabo, the magical hare who rebuilt the world and Tanuki, the sweet but troublesome raccoon-dog of Japanese folklore, Mythopedia is an encyclopedia of mythical creatures that covers legends, tales and myths from around the world. Lovingly created by the illustration duo behind popular flipbook Myth Match, Good Wives and Warriors, this book contains pages upon pages of cultural folklore from around the world. Organized by geography (The Americas, Europe, Africa, Asia & Oceania), it offers a basic overview of mythological creatures from all over the globe. Plus, colorful and imaginative illustrations. Some of the creatures will be familiar (most likely those from The Americas and Europe but some from Asia and Africa as well) while others are strange and exotic (Grootslang: and elephant-snake hybrid; Aun Pana: a creepy monster fish from the Amazon jungle; or Encantado: a bizarre shapeshifting dolphin). Along with the basic descriptions of the creatures are short vignettes of folklore featuring that creature. These are not deep dives into mythology or particularly evocative literary adoptions of the myths. They provide an introduction but those looking for more depth will need to look elsewhere. But where the book really shines is in the bright and evocative illustrations. Page after page of beautiful are illustrates the creatures and stories. They are colorful, with depth and texture and detail. There is a sense of play and joy even as some of the stories are dark and odd. I would love to see what this looks like in full size hardback, but even in digital it was impressive. If you are looking for a beautifully illustrated introduction to mythological creatures of the world, Mythopedia would be a great place to start. |
***Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review*** This book is beautifully illustrated and full of interesting facts and stories. I have never had so much fun learning about myths! |
A beautiful book, colourful and full of illustrations that are as magical as the myths and stories inside! I loved that it went around the world. with a bit of the myths from every place, from the americas to the oceania! Especially as they spoke about the Boto-Rosa from Brazil, here spoken as Encantado! I don't know if its the same or not, but the tale seems the same! |
I received a digital ARC via Netgalley from the publisher though all thoughts are my own. This is a beautifully illustrated book about myths and creatures from around the world. Many of the creatures I hadn't heard about before which was refreshing and told in such a unique way. If you enjoy reading about mythological creatures, I highly recommend checking out this book for you'll be in for quite the treat! |
My son at the end of this book: I wish there were even more stories! It’s hard to get him to read fiction, and so this is even more precious. I felt so too. The non-European myths that are presented are not ones I’ve encountered before. Even the European ones were fun to read and look at because of the exquisite art accompanying it. I’ve already placed an order for a physical book and I’ll probably even buy this one for my kids’ book lover friends, because it’s so pretty. Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the ARC. |

Mythopedia is a beautifully illustrated primer for children who are interested in mythological creatures from around the world. Learn about Anansi, a West African spider god, and read about how he brought stories to the people. Read about shapeshifters like the Tanuki or Raven. This book is great for children and adults alike, it is for anyone starting out their learning journey into the mythology. |
