Myths always contain weird, beautiful, magical creatures and this book compiles a list that is by no means exhaustive but fun to read. All beings are sorted by the continent on which their tales are told. Of course, I knew all the European monsters, especially as the focus is on Greek/Roman and Norse stuff. I have to nitpick at the names that were chosen. We have pegasus but Heracles which makes no sense at all. I'm nitpicky, I know. Apart from that, I learned a lot. Even when I heard about a creature, like the thunderbird, I learned a specific tale about this entity. Especially the South American beings were fun, like the pink were dolphin who comes out when there's a party going on at full moon in the neighborhood. The illustrations look like coloured pencil and watercolour to me, are very detailed and fit nicely to the text. All in all, this book does what it set out to do very nicely and if you want to look at pretty pictures and learn more about mythical creatures, this one is for you. I recieved a copy of this book in exchange for a honest review. |

Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for providing an advanced copy of “Mythopedia: An Encyclopedia of Mythical Beasts and Their Magical Tales” by Good Wives and Warriors. Thoughts and opinions are my own. This book is a beautifully illustrated middle grade collection of myths from around the world. The artwork is stunning from page to page and I imagine a physical copy would do them justice the best. I was familiar with a few of the myths, but most were new to me. I definitely would have loved this book as a kid and I throughly enjoyed reading the stories and looking at the illustrations. I think readers of all ages would enjoy this book especially if they have an interest in expanding their knowledge of myths. This book seems like a library must-have. I’d love to see a sequel or series of these lovely books! 5/5 |
This is such a beautiful book! I was blown away by the illustrations, they are pure perfection. They were eye catching and almost had me in love with the book more than the actual myths! I was so intrigued with all the different myths from all around the world. There were creatures and stories I already knew about but there were so many more that I was learning about for the first time and even though the stories and descriptions are short, you can learn all you need to know from them! Definitely a book I will be proud to have on my own bookshelves and also would adore a volume two! Even though this hasn't even been released yet! Definitely a book that would be easy to read and attention keeping for younger readers! |
This book is not only beautiful to look at but also incredibly fun to read! This artwork is so wonderful that it’s easy to picture the stories of each different creature in your mind. I’m not sure enjoyed the book more, myself or my niece! We’ve flipped through the book multiple times going over all our favorite art and stories. Thank you so much NetGalley for sending me a copy of Mythopedia! |
I received an advance reader copy of this book to read in exchange for an honest review via netgalley and the publishers. This is one of the most beautiful children's books I have seen in a long time! This book is crammed full of amazing mythological creatures with fabulously colourful and detailed illustrations and an abundance of information too. I loved how the book was sectioned into parts of the world these mythological creatures originated from and how most of them had more than a page devoted to them. Children will love reading this and will gaze upon the beautiful illustrations too. |
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read this book ahead of publication. It is currently scheduled to be published in the UK on 14th September. Mythopedia is what the name suggests; an encyclopedia of world mythology. It focuses on the creatures in mythology in each continent with some given a one page introduction and others have this followed by a two page story. The story can be on their birth ( eg Pegasus) or an event they're known for as part of their story (eg Tanuki). There will be animals people are familiar with but chances are they're will be some that are new. This is a children's book, so the language is easy to read (although I would've appreciated a pronunciation guide) and the stories are short and simple. I could see them being popular at bedtime and with an older child it would make a good read along book. For me where this book came into its own was the illustrations. They are gorgeous. I read this on a screen and the illustrations cover every page. They are colourful and incredibly detailed. The style fits both the subject and the intended audience. I may buy/ borrow a copy purely to see how they come across on paper. This review will be posted on my blog on 4th September at 5:30pm UK time. |
Mythopedia is an incredibly illustrated and colourful guide to all things mythical creatures from all over the world. As a huge fan of anything mythical, this was a great read for me. I loved that it didn't just focus on the most commonly known mythologies, but branched out to cultures I hadn't read anything about before. Though this is aimed at children, it's a wonderful and informative read for people of any age. What makes this book stand out for me in particular is the care that has gone into illustrating it. It brings the creatures to life, and there are dozens of little details to be discovered in the background. It's absolutely stunning. Highly recommend! |

Mythopedia is a gorgeously illustrated, accessible adventure across folklore and traditional storytelling of many cultures and peoples of the world. The illustrations are detailed, colorful, and eye-catching, spread out over many pages or as little, delightful details to the longer stories within. When approaching folklore and stories of other cultures, especially those often appropriated and marginalized, it is important to do so with care and respect. These stories about ancient creatures and beings do not ever label their tellers and believers as savage, uneducated, or primitive. They are treated with both wonder and appreciation, making sure to explain that there are many versions of the stories. Mythopedia enables its readers, especially younger ones, to not create monoliths of any one culture and its traditions. These all appear to be well-researched and honestly told; if there is no conclusive ending to be found, no ending is made up which is crucial in all kinds of stories. There is, as always with these kinds of books, concerns about telling other people's stories via outsider tongues and hands, and trampling on sacred stories that should not be shared with outsiders. I am hopeful that since everything else in this book has been so kind that these ideas were also taken into consideration. |
Esse livro é tão lindo! As ilustrações são maravilhosas demais. Uma leitura bem leve e divertida para saber um pouco mais os mitos de vários lugares do mundo. Um livro que agrada não só crianças, mas pessoas de várias idades. |
This is an amazing illustrated book about fascinating myths and legends some heard and unheard of, from around world. The illustrations and colors are gorgeous and would draw any reader in. Stories are short and accessible. I can’t wait to get a copy for myself to read it with my child! I however wouldn’t categorize it as a children’s non fiction because I personally think adults would enjoy it too. Thank you NetGalley and publisher for a free eARC of this book in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are mine. |
I love myths and legends and was really excited to read this book. First of all, it looks beautiful. I love the layout and the illustrations. The book begins with a contents page showing that the myths and legends have been split up into different regions around the world. This is really handy if you are looking for a myth or legend from a particular country. There is then a short introduction to what myths and legends are. This is followed by a beautiful map. The book then goes through the five regions one by one and describes the mythical creatures associated with each. Some of the creatures have a short story that follows their description. The illustrations that accompany the descriptions are just beautiful and would lend themselves very nicely to some artwork inspired by myths and legends. There were some mythical creatures in here that I had heard of already, but plenty that I hadn’t. I found the information included about each creature really interesting and detailed. There was lots of new information to me in this book, and it certainly put a new spin on my childhood favourite, the rainbow fish! This book would be brilliant to use as a prompt for myths and legend writing as well as art and DT work in most year groups. |
Mythopedia's illustrations are utterly gorgeous, the bright colour palette used and the full page spreads are reason enough to give this book a read. A great non-fiction book for children about some lesser known mythical creatures and the legends that accompany them. Thanks to Laurence King publishing for an advanced copy of Mythopedia. |
Mythopedia is a wonderful book full of creature myths from all around the world. Some were familiar to me, but there were many I had never heard of. I was happy to discover such a book and would recommend this to anyone who enjoys mythology and beautiful illustrations. |

I was given an e-arc to review from the publisher (thank you!). This book is GORGEOUS. I just need to take a moment to breathe before I write anymore because I'm still reeling from the beauty of this book. The illustrations...are STUNNING! I don't always say that about books but this took my breath away. I loved the actual book too. It was so informative and it was like stepping into another world. I know this is children's non fiction but I am SERIOUSLY considering buying a physical copy when this is published because it is gorgeous! |
This book has lovely, rich illustrations about lesser-known mythical creatures. I've seen books like this before, but this was one of the most beautiful |
Thank you so much Laurence King Publishing for granting me access to this book via Netgalley! It's one of the best things I've read, ever!!! I knew as soon as I saw that cover and read the blurb that I had to read this one, and I definitely wasn't disappointed! I can go on and on about the things that are amazing about this book, but the list would be endless. It's categorized as children's nonfiction, but I feel that everyone of all ages can benefit a lot from reading this one. It features myths and legends from so many cultures from all over the world, and I learnt so many new things. I've been a lover of mythologies for as long as I can remember, and reading this made me realize how much of mainstream mythology is dominated by European (especially Greek) mythology. The book featured such amazing, colorful, vibrant, and detailed illustrations. The pages were bursting with so much life and it was so easy to get lost in the book. With each short entry, there were amazing illustrations right on the same page so you could get a good pictorial rendering of that creature or story. I loved that the book also had a general introduction to what myths and legends are, which is perfect for young readers or anyone who might be getting their first introduction to myths and legends through this book. Most entries of different creatures also had some short stories connected to them. Apart from talking about different myths, the entries also mentioned the culture/people who believe in the myth, or where the myth originated from. I loved learning about new cultures, people, and myths through this book. |
What a gorgeous books! I don't know how they made the illustrations of such grotesque beings as pretty as they did but wow! Amazing! I also loved that there were lots of beasts and stories that I had never heard of! Thank you to netgalley and the publishers for providing me with an arc for an honest review. |
I love this book. It does everything that a teacher could want, bar plan the lesson for you. Well written and stunningly illustrated. A perfect model text for writing, wonderful for reading comprehension and inspiring for art & culture. I know that this would appeal to so many children for the history, geography, design, magical stories and the detailed tales. An absolute must for every classroom! |
Mythopedia is a gorgeously illustrated guide into different mythological creatures and their legends from all over the world. The book is broken up by a region or continent. Each mythical creature is accompanied by a gorgeous illustration of it along with a one page write up about it. Some creatures have further stories and legends explained over a few pages. Some of the beasts were ones I have grown up reading about and others were completely new to me. I think a pronunciation guide could be helpful. I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves mythology and beasts. The illustrations make this book stand out above all others of its kind. I received an advanced reader copy from Laurence King Publishing through NetGalley. All opinions are 100% my own. |
Given my passion for the subject of mythology, I was irresistibly drawn to this arc and was ecstatic when I was approved. I found incredibly informative; as although I knew of a number of the creatures featured, there were still many within, that I either knew very little, or nothing about. A great number of them were completely alien to me, and so it was incredibly fascinating to read and learn about the creatures of mythology from the different continents of the world. The illustrations were absolutely stunning; they made the creatures of myth jump out of every page, and made them seem all the more real. I definitely hope to pick up a finished copy of this amazing book, or request it as a gift for Christmas, once it is published. |
