I wanted to love this book, but I just couldn't get into it. Whether it was the characters or the writing style, I’m still unsure. I finished the book and was left underwhelmed. It looks at female love and friendship, grief, depression and feeling unsure of your place in the world.

Pizza Girl seems emotionally numb about her pregnancy. Maybe that's because she's only 18, or because she is still grieving the death of her dad? A customer orders pizza for her young son and is a devoted mother. Pizza Girl then becomes obsessed with this woman.

From then on in, it gave girl on the train vibes, and I hated that too. Not for me.

Unfortunately this book was not for me, I couldn’t gel with the characters or story. I have heard fantastic things for this book however so don’t be put off.

A great read. A great read. A great read. A great read. A great read. A great read. A great read. A great read. A great read. A great read. A great read. A great read. A great read. A great read.

A quick read but I’m not entirely sure it was a read for me. I loved the theme of obsession in the book and found it fascinating to read about, but just found the book lacked punch and wasn’t sure what the reader was supposed to come away with at the end of it.

A strange little story of obsession. I liked the flow and pacing of this one but the characters were quite bland even though they were doing weird things. It was nothing that would set the world on fire but a nice quick read.

Pizza Girl is one of those books where I just couldn’t connect to the story and characters, and it’s not the book’s fault. I enjoyed the writing and read it quite fast, but it didn’t leave a long-lasting impression.

Synopsis:

Pizza Girl is a story about an 18-year-old girl that is going through a lot. She is pregnant, living with her mum and boyfriend, and she recently lost her dad. Unsure of every aspect of her life, she is struggling and trying to get by.

Working as a pizza delivery girl, one day she delivers a pizza to Jenny, a stay-at-home mum that has just moved in the neighbourhood.

Every week, these two women interact with each other, and whilst both are fighting their demons, their relationship begins to blur into something unknown and complicated.

My Thoughts:

I am sad to say that I broke up with this book, and it was one of those “it’s not you, it’s me” breakups. Even though I loved the writing and the idea of the story, I wasn’t impressed. Both women made some decisions that I still can’t wrap my head around. Especially our heroine. She has a mum and a boyfriend that care about her in their own way, and she doesn’t seem to acknowledge this. There is a lot going on in her life – it’s not easy to go through pregnancy and the loss of a parent, but she also doesn’t make it easier on herself and avoids help at all costs. Pizza Girl definitely brought all her emotions to life, because I felt everything. I simply couldn’t connect to her struggles in a way that made me care about her character. She crossed a lot of lines, especially around the end of the book and I couldn’t get past that.

Aside from the above, Pizza Girl is a very gripping and easy to read. You will be able to feel all the emotions whilst reading. I was laughing out loud and felt the sadness and anger too. If you are intrigued by the synopsis and are up for reading something out of the ordinary, you might enjoy this book. It just wasn’t the one for me.

I’m not really sure what to make of this book. It was interesting, but quite quirky and perhaps I’m just not the right reader for it.

‘Pizza Girl’ is an 18 year old, pregnant Korean American who forms an intense friendship with a 40 year old customer desperate to find a pickle pepperoni pizza for her son.

Pizza Girl is more character than plot driven, which was perhaps my problem - though I enjoyed the writing in places, I didn’t like or particularly care about the main characters.

Pizza Girl was a strange read - I found it very compelling, if not always enjoyable, and it certainly had that ‘unexpected but inevitable’ quality that can sometimes be elusive. Overall, I would recommend.

Thank you to @hqstories for letting me be a part of the #blogtour for this title. This was a very different type of story for me, so it did take me a minute to get into it. This story is full of angst, confusion, and the overwhelming difficulty of grief. At times, it’s quite dark, with flickers of humour. I appreciate the amount of description which allowed us to delve into the mind of the main character.

This was a strange book, darker than I was expecting and slightly uncomfortable to read. It's well written and I couldn't put it down but I wouldn't want to read it again - if you see what I mean.

Not quite the book I was expecting and so took me a few attempts to get through. Not really my style and I found it difficult to connect with.

Hugely enjoyable!

Thanks to Netgalley and the publishers for providing me with an ARC of this novel in exchange for my feedback.

I read this in one sitting! Something really clicked with me with the characters in this but I found the plot to be strangely dramatic and undramatic simultaneously which I know a lot of people would enjoy but meant that it wasn’t 100% a favourite for me

In Pizza Girl we follow an unnamed 18 year old pregnant girl who works in a pizza shop. She seems to be struggling with life, not knowing where is is going, and the thought of becoming a mother. She isn’t particularly likeable and definitely makes questionable decisions. She becomes obsessed with a customer, Jenny, who orders a crazy pickle pizza for her son and a strange friendship begins...

Well this was a curious little book with a unique premise. I’m struggling to put thoughts into words here, but it was middle of the road for me. There were a lot of bad decisions made without much explanation.

Overall I think this may be a love it or hate it kind of book, it’s not very long so definitely give it a try!

A dark look into the mind of a pizza girl. I enjoyed this book. It was brilliantly written and witty, it was just a lot darker than I expected, and I'm not a fan of dark reads. I'd still recommend it to someone though!

Pizza Girl got me out of my fiction-slump and was completely gripping! And the cover artwork is so beautiful.

I was immediately drawn in by the premise of this title, having always wanted to read a story about a pizza deliverer, and the people they meet on their travels to each house.

This is a tender and emotional coming-of-age story about a young pregnant woman (unnamed - I was very impressed by how attached I came to a character whose name I didn't even know) on the cusp of adulthood, and searching for some direction. Our "Pizza Girl" lives at home with her doting boyfriend and mother, feeling smothered by their care, and appears deeply unhappy. On a delivery trip one night she meets Jenny, a stay at home mother who feels instantly like a kindred spirit. The novel follows this relationship as it develops, and our protagonist's journey coming to terms with her life, her pregnancy, and her fraught relationship with her father.

What I liked about this story was that it didn't shy away from the uncomfortable thoughts that accompanied the main character. She was a very messy and confusing protagonist, but that was part of her charm. The prose was so detailed; it was easy to immerse yourself in this story and these characters, and I had no idea how it would end. There was no promise of a happy ending and it felt like more of a character study, which reminded me of some of my other favourites. My only wish for this is that it had been longer. Such an interesting book!

I thoroughly enjoyed this one!! I love a flawed character and really enjoyed how this book was really sex positive and we really got into the head of our main character. One thing I thought was totally unnecessary though was the use of the ableist slur R****d. It just didn't need to be there.
