A twisty psychological thriller that will get you hooked right from the start. Emily is struggling to find a job after splitting from her controlling boyfriend. She sees an advert for a housekeeper and sends in her application. The job is hers and she suddenly finds herself the housekeeper of a gorgeous house where widower, Rupert lives. After the loss of his wife Rupert has struggled to look after himself and his house so Emily sets to work to tidy and run the house for him. Soon sparks are flying between the two and Rupert invites Emily to stay for dinner, and it is the start of a budding relationship. There is one problem though, Rupert is very reluctant to talk about his deceased wife and Emily is kept in the dark about how she died. Through meeting Rupert’s friends Emily starts to uncover little bits of information but she is also struggling day to day as she feels as though someone is watching her. Suddenly weird things start to happen and Emily is convinced someone is out to get her. Who is it ? And is it linked to Rupert’s first wife ? This is a great psychological thriller with plenty of twists and turns to keep you guessing throughout. This one will have you hooked from the start and I don think anyone would guess that ending !! Thank you to HQ and NetGalley for a digital copy of this book. |
This was such a gripping read full of suspense. I couldn't put it down! So many theories ran through my mind whilst reading. How was it going to end? I wasn't correct at all! If you are looking for a twisty edge-of-your-seat book, look no further! |
I absolutely loved this book and read it in two evenings! The characters came to life and I was enthralled to keep turning the pages to see what happened next. The ending was totally unexpected so it keeps you guessing all the way through! |
I love Lisa Hall's books and this one didn't disappoint. Rupert is a grieving widow who has let things go by the wayside, Emily is in search of a new job and sees Rupert's advert for a housekeeper. Their relationship blossoms and things are looking good until unexpected things start happening leading Emily to believe that Rupert's wife is actually very much alive. The twists and turns in this book are just amazing and that ending, oh my word, that was EPIC. I absolutely didn't see that coming. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ |
The Perfect Couple is another winner from Lisa Hall and is fast becoming one of my favourite authors. The chapters are alternated between Emily and Rupert. Emily who has just left an abusive relationship and is living in a flat share applies for a job as a house keeper in a large manor that belongs to Rupert. Rupert is getting over the death of his wife, Caro. Emily enjoys working for Rupert and finds herself falling for him, very quickly they are married and everything is bliss until strange things start to happen to Emily making her out to be mad. Who is doing these things and who doesn’t want her to be happy? This was a really good psychological thriller and the ending was THE best!! I would like to thank Netgalley and HQ for this ARC I received in exchange for an honest review. |
Another average domestic thriller... I've read quite a few domestic thrillers and this one was just okay. It wasn't particularly original or different. The writing was fine. It was pretty average. Although I was interested enough to read till the end I would say this thriller is probably more suited to people who haven't read a lot of thrillers before. There wasn't many shocks or twists and it was quite obvious to me where the story was going. I didn't really care for any of the characters. None of them were particularly likeable. It was a pretty quick and easy book to read. Although, there were some dark and distressing parts. One thing I did like about this book was that in parts there was some pretty tense and suspenseful parts. Overall, this was just an okay domestic thriller, nothing particularly special TW: gaslighting, domestic abuse, suicide references, bipolar, murder, animal violence and violence |
I have read and enjoyed all of Lisa Hall’s previous books and this was no exception. A tense thriller which had some great twists to keep me guessing throughout. Looking forward to her next book. Thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for giving me the opportunity to read and review this book. |
I enjoyed this story, it was an easy read and moved along at a good pace. I didn’t like either Rupert or Emily very much, I found him quite wooden, clearly uncomfortable about something; while Emily appeared to want to make an issue of everything. She came across as somewhat hysterical, to me anyway, although as the story progresses you do start to wonder whether it is a front - the way she drops her friend Mags when she moves in with Rupert is not the action of a pleasant person. There are twists aplenty, and a sting in the tail at the end. There are clues to the truth if you notice them, but the author has been clever in the way she deflects your thoughts. However, by the end of the story I was really hoping that both Rupert and Emily would get what they deserve. It is a shame that only one of them does. |

This was the first Lisa Hall novel I've read, and I was gripped from the beginning. Vivid characterisation and great scene setting combined to keep me turning the pages until I finished it, in less than twenty four hours! Emily and Rupert are both great narrators who keep the reader on their toes, and although I got the sense of what one twist would be, I didn't see the end coming at all! Great stuff, and I'll certainly be reading more from Lisa Hall. Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the advance copy of this great novel. |
This book had so much promise but I felt I let down. The story was long drawn out but I did not see that twist at the end. 2 stars |
I am a huge fan of Lisa Hall, having loved her previous novels The Party and Between You and Me. The Perfect Couple was very easy to read, I finished it in one day. The chapters weren't too long and the writing flow was pacey and dramatic. I can honestly say I didn't guess the ending which is always a pleasant surprise, as an avid thriller reader, that doesn't happen often! I have chosen to give this book 4 rather than 5 stars only because I thought some of the plot twists and characters to throw the reader off the scent and to keep you guessing were a little frustrating - take Annas creepy flat mate Mags - the character was developed and intriguing, but in the end totally irrelevant? All in all, a thouroughly enjoyable, gripping and well written thriller that I would definitely recommend to fellow fans of Lisa Hall. I can't wait for the next one! Thanks to netgalley for this ARC in exchange for an honest review. |
⭐️⭐️⭐️ 3 ok stars This is my least favourite of Lisa’s books - so sorry to say! I couldn’t gel with any of the characters so ultimately didn’t really invest in the story. I guessed the twist early on and just wanted to know what happened to Caro. Amanda was an under used character- I wanted to know more about her but it was very Sadie focused. The chapters were a tad disjointed with some written from Ellie’s pov and some - a bit randomly towards the end - suddenly from Rupert’s. It was easy enough to read overall but didn’t hook me in. |
I really enjoyed this read lots of twist and turns you don't know what's going to happen next is em really imageing what's happening to her just like Ciro did is em who she says she is I was gripped right to the end |

Thank you to NetGalley for giving me the opportunity to read this book. The story centres around Rupert and Emily. Rupert lost his wife, Caro, a year before he advertises for a housekeeper. Emily is fresh from an awful break up, living in a flat above a kebab shop with her friend Mags. Emily sees the advert and applies for the housekeeper job. Emily lands the job and starts working for Rupert. Rupert and Emily realise there is a spark between them and embark on a whirlwind romance, quickly getting and engaged and then married. Rupert works for his deceased wife’s parents, and still moves in the same social circles as when he was married to Caro. He had old friends from university among others. Sadie is one of his good friends he’s known for years. Sadie is a horrible character. She befriends Emily, but all is not as it seems. Emily asks many questions about Caro’s suicide, and realises someone is watching her, leaving suspicious signs, and breathy phone calls, and horrible texts. Emily is worried it’s her ex, who was a nasty piece of work. As Emily digs deeper there’s lots of secrets and lies. I enjoyed this book, but I did guess some of the twists. The characters were great, most of them unlikable which makes the book even better. The story is a good mix of secrets and lies being exposed. There was still a couple of twists I had t already guessed. Overall this is a good psychological thriller. Lisa Hall is a great author and always delivers a fast paced, page turning, book. |

Twist after twist after twist. Absolutely amazing! I loved this book. Just when you think you've got it all figured out, something else happens that completely shocks you. Emily is such a surprising character and you can't help but love her |
It had been a while since I'd last read a thriller which is always a favourite genre of mine so I was so excited to get stuck into The Perfect Couple by Lisa Hall! Overall I really enjoyed this and it kept me on the edge of my seat from the very beginning. I didn't trust either Rupert or Emily throughout, they both seemed like they had their own secrets and weren't really who they made out to be which made for an interesting read. There were quite a few twists and turns throughout, a few I didn't see coming but I did feel the ending was a little quick and slightly anti-climatic. I'd have liked a few more chapters maybe! |
WOW..... some great twists and turns in this one, especially at the end.... never thought it 🤦♀️ I loved this, great story and characters, didn’t really take to any of them, however that’s the whole point of the book. Emily has just got out of an abusive relationship, is living uncomfortably with a friend and has no job. Rupert is a rich, handsome and young widower who needs a housekeeper. Emily applies for the job and guess what she gets it and they fall in love..... The Perfect Couple or not? There’s plenty of red herrings, Emily questions her instincts, and comes across weak and shallow, she’s so spiteful towards Mags her flat mate. She’s not a very nice person deep down. Sadie and Amanda are a couple of real bitches and there’s a lot of secrets, dishonesty and menace flying around. Is Emily paranoid or going mad? Nothing is as it seems. Hall is an accomplished writer and weaves a great plot together. A great psychological thriller. This gripped me from the start, a quick and easy read and I’d most definitely recommend. Definitely 5⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ from me. Thank you to the author, Netgalley and HQ for this eARC provided in exchange for this unbiased review. |
# The Perfect couple # In real life, I have met quite a few widows and widowers get involved with a housekeeper or gardener. So I real was looking forward to reading a fictional view of this. It definitely did not disappoint, it in reality I’d I had have read this book when I was a widow at 29. It would of. Put me off even considering getting involved with anyone again. It’s certainly gives you one hell of a jolt of what people do. I loved the book, as the author describes it a game of cat and mouse. I would say it was more a tiger after its prey well written, I was sat on the edge of my seat, finding myself wanting to shout out no no no. I was completely absorbed in this book I read in one sitting time just seemed to fly. I am a big coffee drinker. When I went to make one my phone The kindle came with me. That’s how much I did not want to put it down. So many twists and turns it could make you feel dizzy. With a surprising ending. It’s so hard to tell you how much I enjoyed and would recommend this book without giving spoilers away. I will not do that. But please trust me it’s one book that really keeps your eyes glued to the pages. I enjoyed it. Brilliant read |
