Chibi is Japanese slang for 'short' and it can be both endearing when used with a loved one, or an insult when used inappropriately, so be careful how you employ the term! Here it's used to signify a particular type of art which appears in Japanese manga.

This book sets out to teach the techniques and in my opinion it succeeds. It begins with a brief survey of art materials, and gets quickly onto the basics - designing your character's pose and setting out proportions, and capturing motion. Later it covers lighting and blending colors.

It covers facial features: eyes, nose, mouth, as well as hair design, before leading into specific character creations one for each month of the year!) which you can follow along and draw your own version. It covers even more fantasy-like characters under 'chibi beasties' and it has a section on clothes, props, and accessories.

This was a great book with some really good art, and invaluable instruction for anyone who wants to get into this kind of illustration. I commend it as a worthy read.

This is such a cute book. I have not heard of Chibi before which is why I was interested in this book. The author makes it easy to draw them with the 1 and half head sizes with parallel guidelines.. Love the monthly guide to draw a chibi picture each month. It really makes art accessible. If you like a theme of something in a picture, then you can store it in this form as the hands and legs get easy to draw. I drew few and gave them to my kids to color. Also the suggestions of the scale of filling up the space with a bigger cat are inspiring. Draw on,

Love all of the different eye shapes provided too! I followed the instructions and had a fun time choosing colors for my chibi's hair and clothes. Great book for anyone who wants to learn to draw in a cute style.

This book is so cute! I know that is the point, but it really is. My daughter loved everything about it and was excited from page to page. It made me want to try some of them too because of how cute and easy they are. I definitely recommend this book to older children, but anyone who is willing will have fun.

Overall, this is a good, small book on drawing and coloring Chibis. It provides detailled step-by-step instructions, as well as different coloring options. This is great for beginners, as they can see that they can draw really cute stuff with colored pencils, too. Investing in Copic markers is very expensive, so this is a definite plus, especially for young artists just starting out. There was one thing that is missing: a detailed page on expressions. If i had been 13, just starting out, I would chose a different, maybe more expensive book, just to have a variety of Chibi facial expressions to get inspired from.

I will definately go back to this book to try more of the practise chibi's in there. I can already tell you all though, that this is a wonderful book that takes you through drawing them step by step. I drew my first chibi's today, and I am pretty proud of how they turned out, all thanks to clear instructions and illustrations that really made me want to try! I desperately need more marker colours though.

This is such an easy guidebook to drawing and it is suitable for all levels. I used to draw quite a bit but have stopped. This is a great way to start again and I couldn't resist wanting to learn how to draw these doll-like characters. Having said that I'm not sure this is suitable for small children as the instructions can be a tad complicating. Still it is very nice to see the end product and the illustrations are lovely and colourful.

One of the hobbies I want to get into this year is doodling and drawing. I used to doodle all the time when I was younger and it has been years since I picked up the proverbial shading pens.

This book looked like a kawaii spark to rekindle that old flame.

The introduction was well written and very much encouraged trial and error. Many tools were recommended, however the author expressed the importance of practicing over having the "proper" tools.

The tutorials were fun and the pictures were adorable. I particularly enjoyed the focus on eyes and the scale for the chibi doodles.

Part of the practice section highlighted each month with a chibi to match the season.

I will be referencing to this more when I start my tv and movie journal in May for layouts and such. (I recently ordered some supplies and understandably need to await their arrival.)

I enjoyed spending time coloring in what I drew and remembered how relaxing a hobby that used to be for me.

I would definitely recommend this to anyone who either hasn't drawn in the chibi style before or has been out of practice with drawing in general and wants a cute jump start to get back to it!

Being stuck inside during this pandemic has given me a lot of time to do things I've always wanted to. I have always loved the Chibi style art but I am not very good at drawing. My 8 year old and I were excited to learn how to draw the style from this book. It was a little difficult for her because the steps are a little more advanced than step by each step. But we are going to keep practicing and we absolutely love the artwork depicted in this book.

I followed @yoaihime on IG, I like her drawing style. I grew up reading a lot of mangas. I enjoyed so much reading this book too because I draw kawaii things. I haven't try to draw in a chibi style, but after reading this, I want to give a try. In the book, there are a lot of inspirations, how to draw expressions, clothes, hair, etc. Also, it is shown step by step. It is pretty straightforward. The only thing you need to do after reading this book is to practice! No way you can be mastering chibi-style if you haven't followed the instructions there.
